Rental Home
Earthships are homes that are made from tires, bottles, and cans. They are more efficient, and ecological approaches to building. In Taos they rent for thousands a week. The same architect designed ours, but of course we have a Mayan twist overlooking a majestic crater lake. Skilled machete carpenters and masons from the village have contributed to this building, and also including the non-profit 'long way home'. The outdoor kitchen was just completed and we have new appliances, and this thing are getting pretty comfy. Each apartment has unlimited internet. There are 2 apartments and a studio below kitchen for this rental which can house quite a few people. Let's say 8 but that there are many queens and more can stay if they are couples. The apartments remind me of a cave, as the building are built into the side of a mountain (which keeps it cool) with an epic view of the crater lake. We have been implementing permaculture so this is a food forest community with the 'Fungi Academy' and 'Yoga Forest' as neighbor examples. It sits on a few acres of coffee and food forest at the top of barrio 2 above the cemetario. The apartments share water toilet and hot (finnicky) shower, and there is private bath and shower below kitchen, as well as a few compost toilets. Enjoy a gorgeous view of the lake with a back drop of three stunning volcanoes on legendary Lake Atitlan. Our home is unique. Our long-term goal in building this property was to be self-sufficient (we are still working towards that goal). That's why we chose to build in the 'land of eternal spring.' Lake Atitlan has amazing weather - it always feels like spring here. We have two growing seasons, which means there is always something blooming and ready to eat on our property. We have banana trees, papaya trees, berry bushes, coffee bushes, and lots of local fruits like jocotes and whiskil. Also, herbs like rosemary, basil and chipilin (the leaves are tasty and can be used like spinach). We have a guard onsite who can answer your questions or help harvest produce for you (though you will need to speak Spanish or have a Spanish dictionary with you as he only speaks the local Maya dialect and Spanish). Our guard provides 24 hour security, and caters to your every need. Michael Reynolds of Earthship fame is the architect of this sustainable ecosystem in Mayan paradise. Go to the Yoga Forest (a 5-10 minute walk) for yoga and meditation classes or a Sunday morning ecstatic dance party, or drink locally grown coffee in our new outdoor kitchen roasted by our other neighbour. We have an Earthship home (2 Earthship U's that are divided by a wall for maximum privacy) available for short or long term rental. The home is at the top of a hill overlooking gorgeous Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. There are many towns on the lake, but San Marcos is a yoga and spiritual retreat mecca. There are several yoga schools and meditation schools here, lots of holistic healers and massage therapists and herb classes here. San Marcos is an indigenous Maya village with many ex-pats from all over the world. Our property is a permaculture (sustainable agriculture) farm with aquaponics, chickens, and tons of coffee and fruit trees. We are getting the systems going, so the abundance is just beginning. There is a gas camping stove but there is not a full kitchen yet. There is a hot shower, internet, and electricity now, but the outdoor kitchen is still being finished (it is a common area with other cabin). The cabin has a gas stove, and fridge for your cooking needs in the meantime. Since the temperature is pretty moderate all year round, there's not a need for air conditioning or heat, but we just finished the rocket stove bathtub which also provides heat. Some nights can be a little bit chilly but an extra blanket is enough for comfort. Also, it's important to know that you will have to walk for about 5-10 minutes off the main road to get up to our place. The road doesn't go all the way up. You can take tuk-tuk (taxi) to the end of the road. (You will need flashlights/head lamp for the walk at night!) To get to other towns on the lake, you take a public water taxi. San Marcos is small village, but there are some great restaurants as we get a fair number of tourists that come through. This is an excellent rental for adventurous backpacker types! This is kind of like camping with a great shelter, at this point. Please contact us with any questions! There are two Cabins you will have full access to the two story cabin first built by the Earthship Team. We have 4 four staff to help you get comfy. San Marcos is a spiritual community in the Mayan highlands of Lake Atitlan. There is a nature reserve for picnics, and there are an abundance of classes and workshops here, from soap-makin NOTICE: Not suitable for Elderly. This is a rugged, mountain Earthship. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel go to a 5 star hotel. These things rent for $250 a night in Taos, we are charging a fraction. Tourist License / Licencia de turismo N °: 460200722More

I will be managing this from the USA. The workers are not experienced hotel people, they are laborers maintaining the land. Whatever you need they can run to town and get for you items.

Great stop on the lake if you want something different and an ecology lesson. Went to Yoga Forest everyday for Yoga and lunch (next door), and loved the Mayan workers who were very attentive.

About the neighborhood
There is a natural fence of cedar trees. The neighbors are the Mushroom academy and Yoga Forest. NOTICE: Not suitable for Elderly. This is a rugged, mountain Earthship cabin not a luxury hotel.
Getting around
Tuk Tuks are three wheeled vehicles in the village. If you can't walk you can Tuk Tuk for a $1 or $2. To get around the lake you will probably use a boat taxi (a few more bucks). To get around Guatemala I use a private shuttle. From the Airport it is $100 and 3.5 hours to the lakehouse.
