Talahogan is a Navajo word for 'home on hill.' For the Navajo, the hogan is a sacred dwelling--a protection and refuge grounded on a harmony with life and nature. Such is the spirit of Talahogan, a country home located on 2.5 acres on a tranquil hilltop miles away from the bustle of Sedona's commercial and tourist centers. From this hilltop perch, you enjoy the most sweeping panorama of Red Rock Country--a creation of awesome natural beauty sacred to Native Americans--in a peaceful country setting where wildlife still abounds. Originally a hunting cabin built 80-90 years ago, the house has been renovated and expanded over the years to a stunning southwestern home without losing the unpretentious warmth of Sedona's rural past and the spirit of the hogan. We visited with friends and there are honestly not enough good words I can say about the house, location, and host. First off, the house, it’s incredible and perfectly suited for any type of gathering. The landscaping is expertly designed and maintained immaculately, so much so that it’s a full extension of the living space. The view from the patio is stunning and pictures, while beautiful, do not do the majesty of the view justice. I can’t imagine living there and being able to see that every day, I’d never leave. The house is also private, which was really important to my group. The interior was comfortable and cozy, and very very clean (I have crazy high standard for this). At night we had a great view of thunder mountain from the living room window. Utter perfection. The house is also optimally situated to everything. There’s a grocery store minutes away (a rather good one), numerous restaurants, ATVs, shopping, alien tours (it’s better than you would think). In short, there is no shortage of things to do. Ron is an amazing host and provides helpful guides to the area in addition to being incredibly pleasant. If it says anything, we are booked to go back in the spring of this year. I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else.

The views were off the charts and the house is set-up perfectly to take in the panoramic scenery with the large clear windows. Ron, the owner, was a joy to meet with lots of knowledge of the area. Sitting in the hot tub at night taking in all the stars was one of our top evening events. We'll be back for more scenic luxury.

We are three life long friends celebrating our 70th birthdays and chose Sedona for the occasion. Staying at Talahogan made the trip. We loved the views, the quiet, the living with the red rock beauty this home provides. Our stay was awesome!

There is no greater joy than spending seven days of our Arizona vacation at Talahogan. The natural beauty of the place is unsurpassed . . . and that includes the landscape as well as every convenience the house offers. We prepared most of our meals together, and whether eating inside or out on the patio, the views were always relaxing and spectacular. We all arrived with our cameras . . . my 8 and 10 year-olds grandsons loved to get close-ups of the hummingbirds and lizards. I would awake at early daybreak to see the hot air balloons floating by the bedroom window. We left the house occasionally to take a jeep ride through some of the trails, a horseback ride and Cowboy Cookout at M Diamond Ranch, the Friday morning Farmers Market, a slip sliding and apple picking outing at Slide Rock State Park and the boys and their Dads did some trail hiking and rock climbing. The weather was ideal . . . light comfortable breeze and low humidity. Did I love everything about it? YES including Ron, the owner.

Maggi, thank you so much for this excellent review, the kind personal compliment as well as all our earlier correspondence! Reviews are always welcome, but so few guests--even those who profess LOVING Talahogan--take the time to pen one. Very delighted to know your grandsons enjoyed getting close to the wildlife that abounds up there; and if they got any good shots of those hummingbirds, please share! Also, how did you like M Diamond Ranch? Am aware of it but never visited. Many thanks again and hope you;ll all be able to return again. Ron

My family and I stayed at Talahogan for the month of May and it was one of the most unforgettable vacations. The place was amazing. The inside of the house is very charming with stunning views from every window. The outside is surrounded by breathtaking views and gardens that welcome wildlife. One of my favorite characteristics of Talahogan is that the windows are slightly tinted allowing the animals outside not to be startled when watching them. We were able to see Javelina, golden eagles, deer, bobcats, coyotes, and many different kinds of beautiful birds. The area is private and quite which makes the stay very peaceful. It’s a short drive to town and to several hiking trails in the area. We have stayed in several other highly rated places including homes and Enchantment resort in Sedona and Talahogan is by far the most incredible place. Usually when in Sedona we drive to different places to see the beautiful scenery, at Talahogan you are completely immersed in it. I would recommend anyone visiting Sedona to stay here!

My sister, 22 year old nephew, 84 year old father, and I stayed here for three nights. The home was absolutely perfect for us, with a bedroom for each of us, along with the futon in the den. There was an amazing view from big picture windows in every single direction! We so enjoyed having our coffee and breakfast outside on the patio each morning. It's so peaceful and quiet, being in such a secluded residential area. However, a short drive into town gets you to any and everything you could possibly need. Though we didn't spend our time cooking at home, you certainly could. The kitchen was stocked with everything you would need to cook a complete meal. The meticulously landscaped grounds were such a delight to walk through in the mornings and evenings. We didn't get to see any wildlife during our stay, but the giant rock formations were more than enough for us to admire. The only negative was that we didn't stay longer. When I go back with my husband, we will stay a whole week!

This is a fantastic place with an outstanding 360 view on the surrounding red rock mountains. In particular the panorama views early in the morning and in the evening are breathtaking. The property offers a lot of places to sit outside in the shade to relax. Another highlight is the beautiful, natural garden with a great variety of local plants and trees. It was great fun for our kids to watch rabbits, birds and other animals which live there. The house is very well equipped and offers plenty of individual space. As there are a lot of large windows on all sides you still feel like being in nature, even when sitting inside. This is definitively a place for us to come back again in the future.

Just amazing is how I would describe the red rock views from atop this hilltop in West Sedona. Rural and private, yet only minutes from anything you need. After a day of hiking or touring, this is your peaceful place to call home. Wonderful shaded outdoor areas to enjoy the views, even in the warmest weather. Formerly a lodge/cabin, this special has added space and upgrades to provide a comfortable place to stay. The views are even breathtaking while laying in bed from any of the 3 bedrooms. Walls of glass are everywhere to bring the outside in. There are two water features that provide soothing sounds, while providing some of the interesting wildlife with a place to stop and get a drink. There is an excellent Weber gas grill, under the shade of a large Juniper tree, so that you can cook at home and take in the view and the spectacular sunsets. There is a hot tub to soothe those tired muscles after a day of hiking, or just to sit and enjoy a canopy of brilliant stars. This property has that feel like being home, and Ron is the perfect host. Quick responses to any question, and assistance in sights to see, will characterize any contact you will have with him. We intend to come back, and you should not hesitate to stay at Talahogan.

About the neighborhood
Talahogan sits on one of the most remarkable view properties in all Sedona. From its hilltop perch on Sedona's western fringe, there are unobstructed panoramic vi of Red Rock Country in virtually all directions--from Cathedral, Castle, Bell and Courthouse rocks in the southeast to Mitten Ridge and Schnebly hill in the east. To the north, are magnificent views of Capitol Butte, the Wilderness Area and Boynton Canyon, wrapping around to Doe Mesa and Cockscomb Butte, the westernmost bastions of Red Rock Country. The beauty of these red rock vistas varies from season to season and throughout the day as the sun and clouds move across the sky in an ever-changing tableau of light, shadows and color...sometimes, like after monsoon rains, graced by a magnificent rainbow.
