The cottage uses solar power for lights and other basic facilities. The cottage does not have TV or WiFi facilities. We are situated on a farm near Hermannsburg and Greytown in Kwazulu Natal. On a plateau overlooking the hills of the Zulu Kingdom, we boast spectacular yet peaceful views of the rural countryside, with hills and vales that beg exploring. The Hermannsburg / Kranskop area is extremely picturesque with valleys, mountains, rivers and dramatic krantzes. Beautifully preserved meadows abound in wild flowers and a great variety of birds. This tranquil setting is great for those who simply want to get away and reflect and an ideal respite for weary travelers on their way through. Hermannsburg was settled in 1854 by missionaries and colonists from northern Germany. The present day community is still centered around the original Mission House (now the museum), and the Luthern Church. Kranskop, previously known as Hopetown, is a typical trading town full of African bustle. Experience the thrill of the outdoors by exploring our hiking and mountain bike trails, and mingle with the locals by vising a Zulu kraal near the river. We also arrange motor bike excursions for enthusiasts, which is an absolutely perfect way to explore the country. Bush camping is also available for those who want to truly go rustic and back to nature. Indigenous forests in the gorges on the farm are home to birds and wild life. Vervet monkeys, jackal, bush pig and several small buck species amongst other animals have been spotted on Glen Erskine. The cliffs are home to dassies and birds of prey. Other attractions nearby would include the following: - Learn about the early German settlers to this region by visiting the museum in Hermannsburg, - arrange for an out ride with the stables at the Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg - take a drive to the striking and picturesque Kop overlooking the Tugela River near Kranskop - enjoy the Shu-Shu hot springs (in winter only) and the Lilani hot springs - drop in at the St Cathryn’s Golf Estate for a game and sundowners. They also do catering, so you can arrange a sumptious meal or two. - spend a day on the beautiful Midlands Meander the midlands meander provides an enriching experience for the tourist by means of a varied array of hospitality, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities in a beautiful and unique country setting. - Or visit Lake Merthley near Greytown for a laid-back picnic

A cosey cottage with spectacular views and welcoming owners
I grew up in the area and have visited the farm many times. Since the guest house was built I've also stayed there on multiple occasions. The cottage is gorgeous, my most memorable moments would be waking up to the view of the valley during sunrise - breathtaking - with nothing but the sound of crickets and the farm coming to life. I love cosy nooks and fireplaces, and snuggling up to the fire with a good book and a cup of tea or just chatting with friends for hours around the fireplace is also one of the many fond memories I have. I've also done my fair share of "exploring' doing the walk down the valley and meeting the locals who are always very welcoming and excited to meet new people, taking peaceful walks along the cliffs or through the forest. Its peaceful and tranquil and I always feel rejuvenated when I leave. You have never met a more friendly and welcoming family, its home away from home and I always look forward to my next visit.

This is the place for harmony
I stayed here for one week during my road trip in SA and I had a marvelous time. The view over the valley from the garden is stunning. I did a hike in the Drakensberg, Canopy adventure in Karkloof and a ride on the Midlands Meander, all of this in the surrounding area. The place is very calm and is far away from traffic and other disruptive noise. The house is large and has all the necessities for a very comfortable stay. The owner is very kind and helpful with information. I will definitely stay here next time I come to KwaZulu Natal

About the neighborhood
The Hermannsburg / Kranskop area is extremely picturesque with valleys, mountains, rivers and dramatic krantzes. Beautifully preserved meadows abound in wild flowers and a great variety of birds. Hermannsburg was settled in 1854 by missionaries and colonists from northern Germany. The present day community is still centered around the original Mission House (now the museum), and the Luthern Church. Kranskop, previously known as Hopetown, is a typical trading town full of African bustle. Having a car is essential as Glen Erskine Farm cannot be reached by public transport. The uShaka Airport is R120 km away near the city of Durban. Hermannsburg can be approached on the R74 from Stanger or Greytown, or on the R33 from Pietermaritzburg or Dundee. For those approaching from Pietermaritzburg, Travel about 55 – 60km Travel through New Hanover, Seven Oaks and before you get to Greytown look out for the Kranskop/ Mispah/Stanger sign “Kranskop/ Mispah/Stanger” just before the huge grain silos to the right of the R33. The P160 is a fairly good tar road. Take this road for +/- 15km until you come to a T-junction at Welgegund – turn right towards Kranskop. The Hermannsburg turn to the right is 10km from the T-junction and is clearly signposted. Turn right onto the P305 at the crossroads by the piggery and then left onto the Boscombe Mondi turnoff. From there simply follow the Glen Erskine signs for another 8km to the farm. From Gauteng Route 1: Take the N3 Highway and go off at Mooiriver and take road to Greytown, go straight through Greytown and the Hermannsburg turnoff is about 24km outside of Greytown on the R74. Turn left at the Boscomb Mondi turnoff on the P305, and follow the Glen Erskine signs for another 8km to the farm. Route 2: Take the N3 Highway and go off at Ladysmith and the travel Colenso, Weenen, Muden then Greytown, travel straight through Greytown and the Hermannsburg turnoff is about 24km outside of Greytown on the R74. Turn left at the Boscomb Mondi turnoff on the P305, and follow the Glen Erskine signs for another 8km to the farm. Please travel carefully and preferably by day in order to avoid the potholes, cattle and game on some of our more rural road.
