Cottage
ERW WEN is a self catering holiday cottage at Newport Parrog (harbour). Located by the coastal path in the Pembrokeshire National Park, there are wonderful sea views and the large sandy beach is one of the best in Pembrokeshire. It sleeps up to 9 comfortably, although small groups will also find it very manageable. Newport is an ancient borough in the heart of the Pembrokeshire National Park, set between the Preseli Hills and the sea. There are excellent shops as well as pubs, restaurants and galleries. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and the town centre and shops can be reached in 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes walk. The area around Newport is Welsh-speaking.
The holiday cottage is modern, warm and comfortable, with wonderful sea views and a large garden. It is about 130 me...

Glorious views and so comfortable - will definitely want to stay there again.
With stunning views over the harbour and out to sea, Erw Wen cottage is such a welcoming and comfortable place to stay. The cottage is actually a very spacious house and it's only 5 minutes walk down the lane to the sea, so it's perfectly placed for swimming with plenty of space for drying wet swimming & boating gear and general beach stuff. We did lots of walking both along the Pembrokeshire coast path (which is also 5 minutes walk away from the house) and inland and I particularly liked to come back after a good walk to a warm and relaxing house, sitting in the kitchen/breakfast room and looking out over the sea. We also enjoyed walking along the Parrog past the harbour into the little town and trying out the various bars and restaurants. A really special place.

Stunning location with amazing views
We stayed for a week at this lovely holiday home for a family holiday, there were 9 of us and 2 dogs (kids and grandparents). Even though the house was very spacious and we were not on top of each other, there was a very cosy feel to the property, it was warm and welcoming. The kitchen/breakfast room/sun room was wonderful with the Aga adding to the warmth and a view to die for. Cooking on the Aga was an experience which we enjoyed very much, the kitchen was extremely well equipped plenty of quality pots pans and dishes etc. The garden was huge with far reaching views, the girls and dogs had a brilliant time and the table tennis in the garage kept many a tournament going! There was a wood burning stove in the lounge however we didn't use this as the Aga and the heating was enough for us. The location of the house was perfect, a 2 minute walk to the lovely beach and rock pools, perfect for exploring, the village of Newport a 10 minute stroll had everything you could wish for, pubs, a lovely butchers, convenience store and a few other little interesting shops to add to the quaintness of the place. the castle pub allowed dogs. This cottage is perfect for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location, we hope to return sometime soon!

Special
Really great house in ideal location - loved the views, the garden, the Aga, the spacious kitchen diner, and the general feel of the place. A well equipped proper house/home with everything you need whatever the weather. There was not a single negative, and the owners were very reasonable and easy to deal with.

A quiet convenient holiday let with lots of space.
We know the area well, but this was the first time we'd stayed at Erw Wen, a well-appointed, modern but rambling, house both convenient for the beach and not overlooked.
Communications around the booking and with local 'caretakers' was efficient. Notices and instructions for guests at the house were helpful and unobtrusive.
The whole experience was positive.

Wonderful position
The position of the house is stunning – overlooking the estuary and within Easy walking distance of Newport – where there are excellent places to eat et cetera. The house is well equipped and the Aga Is extremely welcome as the evenings get cooler.

About the neighborhood
Walks and activities The holiday house is located on the Pembrokeshire coastal footpath and there are walks in all directions - to Dinas Head one way, round the estuary the other (good for bird watching) or up onto the Preseli hills - said to be the source of the Blue Stone for Stonehenge. By car the whole of the Pembrokeshire peninsula is within easy reach, and Erw Wen is a good base for walking more of the National Park Coastal Path. Boats to the islands off the coast are great fun - try Puffin watching on Skomer. Visit Pentre Ifan, the largest group of standing stones in Wales, to be found on the hills overlooking Newport. In the house you will find an information binder and also brochures and leaflets.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park: Predominantly coastal, the park has some of the most beautiful coastline in Europe. Offshore islands, the largest of which are Skomer, Skokholm, Ramsey, Grasholm and Caldey, are internationally known for their sea bird and seal populations. The waters around Skomer make up one of only two Marine Nature Reserves in the British Isles. The coast varies from high cliffs to long open beaches. There are sheltered coves, harbours, mud flats and dunes.
Boating at Newport Parrog Newport Parrog

In contrast are the wooded slopes of the Gwaun Valley and the windswept expanse of the Preseli Hills. This is a Welsh speaking area although you will have no problems being understood. There is a National Park Information Office in Long Street, Newport, opposite the car park. See National Park web site

Sports and Boating

Tennis There are 2 tennis courts just a few minutes walk from the house so bring your rackets and balls. You book at the TIC (Tourist Information Centre) in Long Street.
Golf Newport Golf Club has an 18 hole golf course with glorious views overlooking the sea on the far side of the estuary.
Water Sports Newport excels for water sports. It is great for sailing, canoeing and windsurfing (in the estuary or out in the bay). There is space to store boats at the house. Newport Boat Club is a short walk along the sea front. It accepts holiday members and is a wonderful place to have a drink and watch the sunset. Most boating takes place at high tide. Finally, in the garage there is a table tennis table - especially useful on wet days.
Pentre Ifan (near Newport) Pentre Ifan

Shopping, craft centres etc The centre of Newport can be reached in 15 minutes walk, or by car, and has a range of small shops, including a Spar Supermarket which is open every day from 8 am until 10 pm and an excellent Wholefood shop. There are a number of cafes and restaurants as well as several pubs which provide meals. There is a large TESCO in Cardigan 20 minutes drive away as well as a variety of shops in Fishguard which is a little closer in the other direction. At the Carningli centre you will find arts, crafts and pictures. In the surrounding area there are many small workshops producing craft products (for example, the candle workshop at Cilgwyn.)

Eating Out For a special meal try Cnapan Restaurant, East Street, Newport which is Egon Ronay recommended. You can also eat at Morawelon Cafe and Restaurant on the front a couple of minutes walk from the house (check opening hours - they now are open some evenings).

Here are a few more of the good pubs and restaurants in and around Newport
Cnapan - Probably our favourite restaurant in Newport for a special occasion - or a good lunch
Llys Meddyg - Modern and expensive, but a good place for that special occasion.
Mochyn Drwg - Restaurant occupying what used to be the Book Shop - good quality, very well cooked
Royal Oak Pub - our favourite pub restaurant; good food, friendly atmosphere
The Golden Lion - Friendly pub with sizeable restaurant to rear, serving good pub food.
The Sloop Inn (Porthgain) A traditional pub in the harbour village of Porthgain, about 30 minutes by car.

See the Pembrokeshire Dining Guide (for Newport)

Travel to Erw Wen Most people drive, taking about 4.5 hours from West London or 4 hours from the West Midlands plus stops. It is also possible to use public transport. More details are on our travel page, and full directions are sent with the joining instructions.
Getting around
There's a reasonable bus service, including the National Park's "Poppet Rocket" service. This is very useful for walkers, and stops just 5 minutes from the house.

How to get there
Cardiff is the nearest Airport. There's a railway station in Fishguard, with several trains each day. Haverfordwest station has a more regular train service (it's about 40 minutes drive).
