Your hosts, Peter and Martha, are retired National Park Service rangers. They live in a cabin on site. The private guest cabin, which we call 'Camp 1', has one bedroom with queen size bed; two large windows look out into the peaceful, undeveloped woodlands surrounding the cabin. The cabin is perfect for two adults; a pull-out full-size sofa bed in the living room provides sleeping capacity for two additional adults. The living room chair has to be slid out of the way when the sleeper couch is extended. The kitchen has a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, gas oven and cooktop. While we don't have Wi-Fi access, guests are welcome to use their phone hotspot to connect with wireless network service. Sauna: Cabin guests have private and exclusive use of the wood-fired sauna. Firewood is provided. The sauna has lower and upper outside sitting decks for cool downs, libation and reflection. Both decks offer spectacular views of Denali and the mountains of the Alaska Range - weather dependent of course. If guests need help starting or maintaining a fire in the sauna (or cabin) wood stoves, we'll show you how or do it for you. Guests are invited to sit in the greenhouse or attached Atrium and walk through the outdoor gardens. It takes a little more planning and effort, but one can grow garden crops in Alaska! Guests may share in any harvest that is ready for picking. Parking: Talkeetna Basecamp has plenty of year-round parking space for our guests. We can accommodate two SUV/truck type vehicles with trailers. Trailers need to be backed into parking areas; we don't have a pull through turn-around. We turn the water off between November 1 and April 30. However, the cabin is super insulated and easily heated by the Toyo and wood stoves. The cedar board-lined outhouse is the off-season toilet (complete with insulated seat); 5-gallon jugs of water are provided in the kitchen and the sauna is used for bathing.More

Cozy “Cottage” In The Woods
Pete & Martha’s “cottage” was everything we expected & so much more! Their personal touch throughout made us feel like we were visiting best friends. The surrounding woods, veggie garden, fire pits, walking paths & flowers were definitely a labor of love! And the View! Amazing! The cabin was warm & cozy. The kitchen had everything you’d need to prepare hot chocolate to a gourmet dinner. The bedroom had beautiful bed linens with views of the trees & sky. Logan, their handsome German Shepard, was a delight! Pete & Martha’s cottage was the perfect finale to our incredible 3 weeks in Alaska! We’re looking forward to visiting again! Perfect place to enjoy beautiful Alaska
I booked this cabin because of the perfect review by previous guests. Everything was perfect including kitchen, dining room, bed room, living room, batch, etc. Even though Sauna was offered, we had no time to enjoy it. On Sept.4, we left Whittier at 5:00 pm after cruise to this cabin that takes about 3.5h. I was afraid of the direction to this cabin at the beginning, but the written direction from Peter was perfect. We are satisfied with everything in this cabin. The only thing that I regret is that I did not have enough time to enjoy this cabin. I strongly recommend if you plan to visit this cabin, take plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mt. Denali from 100 miles away. You cannot imagine such a beautiful scenery from the deck. Peter and Martha and two dogs were all friendly. Kitchen has everything that I need. Even more than that I have at home. The heating, shower at bathroom, gas oven in the kitchen was perfect. The only thing that is missing is TV cable. The TV in the living room is used for DVD. There are many useful books in the living room related with Alaska.

Talkeetna Base Camp wilderness cabin
Absolutely wonderful cabin which we stayed at for three nights. It truly deserves its description as a wilderness cabin being surrounded by wild forest. The cabin is extremely comfortable and beautifully furnished. The kitchen includes oven with range and a fridge freezer and is stocked with many provisions - herbs, spices, tea and coffee. My wife and I stayed with her sister and husband. Only one bedroom but the sofa bed in the living room made it a comfortable space for four people. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming and happy to help with anything. Guests also have access to a sauna a minute's walk from the cabin. There is a deck above the sauna with incredible views over the surrounding area and mountains - we enjoyed breathtaking sunsets during our stay. The owners have a well stocked greenhouse and vegetable garden which guests are invited to use. Talkeetna, a charming small town with great places to eat, is a ten minute drive from the cabin and Denali is within a two hour drive. The Base Camp cabin is a perfect place to relax and the owners are extremely friendly and passionate about the environment in which they live. I could not recommend this cabin highly enough!

Perfect for those who would rather have privacy and not be in a hotel or in town.
The location and amenities were great, as was conversation with the owners and others who came to visit. The beautiful gardens and view were awesome. Unfortunately, we didn't spend a lot of time there as we were trying to get as much of Alaska into our trip as we could in a week's time. The lack of a TV was a good thing as it made us do other things, which is why we went to Alaska in the first place. Would highly recommend and would certainly stay there again if we ever get back to the area.

Comfort in the Wilderness
The Talkeetna Basecamp Wilderness Cabin is definitely a diamond in the rough! Pete and Martha have done a fantastic job of creating such a cozy and comfortable base for our time in Talkeetna and Denali. You wouldn't know you were off the grid if you didn't know beforehand and if you missed the solar panels while exploring the beautiful grounds. The fact that the hosts are both retired National Park Rangers doesn't hurt when you are seeking information. I very highly recommend Basecamp Wilderness Cabin.

Wonderful Guest Cabin
This cabin was the perfect size and had all the amenities my wife and I could have asked for. Our host Peter, and his wife, were very easy-going and kind people and made our stay relaxing and enjoyable. Although we only stayed one night, I will definitely remember Peter and Martha anytime my wife and I would like a place to vacation or stay down near Talkeetna. Tobin

Shockingly fantastic accomodations
Pete asked us several times if there was anything we could think of to improve our stay, and we just couldn't. The cabin is cozy but not tiny, well-furnished and the kitchen well-equipped. The shower is fantastic. The woodburning stove is easy and romantic. The views are amazing. We didn't try the sauna, but we did sit on top of the sauna building and take photos of Denali. We booked this cabin because it was a good price for a stay in Talkeetna while headed to Denali, and came to regret only having it for one night. We'll be back next year for a longer stay.

Beautiful cabin in an idyllic setting.
Our host was attentive and helpful but respectful of our privacy. The cabin is newly constructed, very clean, fully stocked with everything you need to cook your own meals. It was a bit tight with four but that was a minor issue. It is beautifully situated with views of the valley and the Alaskan range. A 20 minute drive to Talkeetna or the nearest grocery store. The right kind of remoteness for us. Adding to the charm and attractiveness was the off-the-grid life style (solar panels, well water, composting). Pete and Martha also generously shared their garden vegetables. Above expectations.

Breathtaking in every way
Camp One was by far the BEST location, accommodation, and most importantly hosts of our 14 day excursion into Alaska. Every detail imaginable was thought out in this beautiful, secluded, private, and breathtakingly amazing cabin. From the view, to the bed, to the smallest of comforts, Peter and Martha literally thought of it all. Fresh local wildflowers greeted us and the kitchen offered us every option to cook, including spices! Most important to us was a feeling like we were staying in a home or place we'd never want to leave, and Camp One (the cabin) was just that. While we arrived early, our host was able to chat with us and provide some wonderful suggestions to the local area. One such recommendation literally was the pinnacle of our trip as we landed on Ruth Glacier through a flight seeing tour, during an unusually clear day with views of Mt. Denali summit. The sauna and the rooftop deck provided an excellent area to enjoy the view, the warm summer air, and read a nice book. After a long day, the shower was instantly hot, and the extremely comfortable queen mattress was inviting. The living area is more than spacious for 2 couples or 4 people total if you use the Sofa Sleeper. While we didn't try it, we read many guest book entries saying it was comfy. Being off-grid, we respected the minimal use of resources, even though every option was available and not restricted in anyway. Lots of hot water, plenty of light and electricity and an absolutely stunning view from the bedroom. With the Alaska summer sun high in the sky through the late hours, the blackout shades in the bedroom made it easy to drift to sleep and we never heard a sound other than the local birds. You'll probably find the most exceptional part of a stay here to be your interaction with your hosts. Peter and Martha made us feel like family in a very private and secluded setting, inspiring us to consider such a location ourselves. This experience alone would make us want to come back and visit Camp One, Peter and Martha, their two German Shepards Gunner and Odin, and Alaska. Our only regret was not staying that second night...We'll be back it's just a question of how soon.

The only thing that was not acceptable was the mosquitos.
The whole experience was outstanding. The only thing that I can complain about was the mosquito's which were horrible. Our hosts were great in every way. Couldn't have asked for nicer accommodations.

About the neighborhood
No buildings save for a lone barn on the distant horizon are visible from our ridgetop 5 acres. The Talkeetna Mountains to the east provide a beautiful backdrop to the pond and wetlands adjacent to Basecamp. Looking west on a clear day from the sauna decks and campfire circle, there are great views of Denali, Mt. Hunter, Mt. Foraker and the expansive Susitna River Valley. The surrounding area is not just rural, it's vast wilderness; that's one reason we get to see moose and other critters so often. There are only two gravel roads in the immediate area with very low vehicle use. We walk them regularly with our two aging German Shepard dogs. There are a few year-round homes in the area: low use weekend cabins predominate. Only a handful of these structures are visible from the roads. Crime is such a non-issue that we don't even lock our doors. Montana Creek, which you'll cross on the way to Basecamp is only a mile away and has darn good fishing for rainbow trout (catch and release only). We know all the 'unofficial' trails surrounding Basecamp. We'll show you where they are.

How to get there
Madame SIRI on an IPhone (or other such 'techno' navigation device) can direct you to 40143 Malaspina Loop Road, Talkeetna, AK. Otherwise... From either Anchorage or Fairbanks, take Alaska Highway 3 to Milepost 99. Turn onto the Talkeetna Spur Road. Take the Spur Road toward Talkeetna. At Milepost 3, turn right onto Yoder Road. Follow Yoder Road 4.5 miles to a right turn (just past a large metal bridge) onto West Montana Creek Road. In .4 miles, turn left onto Kustaka Road. At the top of the hill, follow the sharp curve to the right; Kustaka become Malaspina Loop Road at this point. Basecamp is 1/4 mile down Malaspina on the right.
