House Rental
The house was first built in 1920 and families of weaving craftsmen lived and worked for generations until a decade ago. In 2014, the typical Kyoto wooden house called “machiya” was completed renovated by the top renovation designer Hachise, maintaining its unique wooden structure as machiya.
The 1st floor of this total of 52 m2 two-story townhouse consists of a retro but spacious island kitchen, a walnut dining table and chairs for five, and a living area with a Scandinavian sofa, center table, and TV board on white thermo tiles, facing a mini Japanese garden, along with bath/shower/powder rooms and toilet. One of the two sleeping rooms, with natural wooden beam on the ceiling, accommodates two single beds on the walnut floor and the other is a typical tatami room for two persons.

Really Lovely
Difficult to find better place to stay in Kyoto! Great little house, with everything you can think of, quiet, with a great host. Shimpei has made the place a true perfection.

Thank you for staying at the house! It was really an exciting experience to have a guest from outside of the country for the first time after the outbreak of the pandemic. Truly looking forward to seeing you again if you have a chance during your stay in Japan! Shimpei

Real Kyoto experience
This 2-story House is only few minutes walk from Daitokuji. The House used to be textile weavers modest atelier cum residence. It is very well rennovated to a modern house still keeping original charm. First floor is kitchen living dining/toilet/bath (can see small garden while you are in bath tab), and upstairs are two bed rooms: one tatami (cozy) and the other western. It is small but you can find beauty of small - this is how people live in Japan. House is well equipped and amazingly high tech (you need to invest a bit of time how all gadgets function, but they are useful) adapted to Kyoto’s difficult weather: hot and humid summer, and cold winter. Slightly away from center city but good access to northern part of Kyoto. You can go to places like Kinkakuji, Kitano tenmangu, Kamikamo Shrine by bicycle. Local commercial street (walking distance) is very active and you can find anything: high-end supermarket, drug store, tofu maker, rice shop, restaurants, stylish cafe, and many other small shops, and public bath (very interesting!). Island-design kitchen helps communication. Kitchen also is small but well equipped. Shimpei san is a bit shy (in a good sense) but very caring conscientious host. He is very informative. He gave us very good advice like Daitokuji's new year eve "gong" (Joya no Kane) and Super public bath “Funaoka Onsen” both are walking distance from home. Among all, the best property of the house and surrounding is “comfortable quietness”. Suitable for family and intimate friends who are looking for Kyoto residential experience.

Thank you Naoko-san for the stay and leaving the useful review comments for my future guests and myself! The total floor area of the house is only about 60 m2 (600 sqft) so it maybe a bit too small for four or five adults for a long stay but ok for groups to stay shorter like you did or ones with small kids. All high tech gadgets are partially from my idea but partially from my past guests' suggestions. The area is not in a busy sightseeing area but as you described nicely it can be good for those interested in experiencing typical daily life in Kyoto. Glad to hear you found the way to the new year gong as well as to the Funaoka Onsen public bath! Looking forward to meeting you and your family sometime in the near future! Shimpei

Perfect place to stay in Kyoto away from hustle and bustle of turisty areas
Good place to stay in Kyoto for a couple of small family. This little house has everything one might need while traveling plus a lot of unexpected extras (such as taxi pager, for instance - very useful for people not fluent in Japanese). The location is to the North of main tourist attractions but Kyoto is pretty walk able and host provides four nice bikes. The area is nice, quiet and clean, with a plenty of supermarkets, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Bus terminal and subway are 10 min on foot. Kyoto botanical garden is about 25 min away (10 min by bike). Overall, pretty nice place to stay. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again if visiting Kyoto.

Thank you for staying at the house and leaving a useful review for my future guests! As you described, the house fits to those who want to stay away from bustle and hustle, are interested in daily life of local people, and don't mind using bicycles or walk a bit as well as for those already are familiar with the city like yourself. Would be great if we can see each other again when you come back next time!

Fantastic stay
Shimpei was a fantastic host and the house was clean, comfortable and had everything we could possibly need! It was perfect for 2 people to stay.
Shimpei met us there to talk us through all the appliances, which was extremely helpful. He was also available if we had any questions or problems throughout our stay.
Just a short walk from the subway station and shops, it was in a good location to explore Kyoto.

Beautiful home, very attentive host
Shimpei’s place was spectacular. It was a beautiful new house with plenty of space. Shimpei was a wonderful host whom made sure that we understood how to work all the amenities. This was extremely helpful since we could not read Japanese. We had a toddler and having the gate on the stairs was an absolute must. We would definitely stay here again.

Well appointed, excellent home in Kyoto! Wonderful host!
Our 6 night stay in Shimpei's home was absolutely fantastic. The home is located in a more suburban area of Kyoto, about 15-20mins from Kyoto station, and about 20-30mins by bus from Nishiki markets area. That was part of the appeal, as we felt very much like Kyoto locals, living outside of the typical touristy center of town. Shimpei's home is very well equipped and there are lovely extra touches all throughout. Kitchen, toilet and bathroom/shower were all very modern and very clean. We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) and found we had plenty of room. Lots of breakfasts on the sizeable dining table, and evening relaxing on the couch after long days out on the town and on Shimpei's bikes which are provided free of charge. We absolutely loved our ride around Kyoto, and all along the river - thank you for allowing us to have these experiences Shimpei! Overall Shimpei was an excellent host for us, he met us at the home, explained everything, gave lots of useful tips about local attractions and restaurants. We had some challenges with our luggage and Shimpei very kindly offered to take care of it for us and organised Takkyubin pickup of our luggage for us - it was fantastic and very much appreciated. We highly recommend Shimpei's home to anyone, and would gladly stay there again on our next visit to Kyoto!

Thank you Michael for the stay and such a very detail and lively description of the house and how you stayed, which I think are all helpful for my future guests to decide. You are right in that the house is not super conveniently located in some sense but would be a good place to those who wish to stay like a local, perhaps especially those with kids. Bikes are definitely useful here to get around, given the distance to the subway station (1km) but relatively short distance to Golden Pavilion and Kamogawa river (within 10 min by bike). I appreciate your constructive feedback as well! Luggage is always challenging to me as well when I am abroad so I am happy to help this for any guests (and actually there is a service where my guests can drop luggage at Kyoto station so it is delivered to the house before 6pm). I was very glad to hear you seem to fully enjoy the stay in the house and the city. Looking forward to your next visit to the city and the house in the near future! Shimpei

Wonderful kid friendly home in Kyoto!
What a wonderful respite for us during our 5 day stay in Kyoto. This well appointed, cozy home was perfect for my family (2 adults + 3 kids) and everyone felt at home immediately upon arrival. Shimpei met us when we arrived and took the time to show us around, walk us through house instructions, gave us recommendations based on our kids preferences and was simply so hospitable. Shimpei has an extensive list of recommendations for pretty much anything you want to do ready to read through at the house-he has thought of pretty much everything to make your stay easy. There are 4 bikes that guests can use and this was a huge treat. Shimpei even had an infant seat for our youngest kid and helmets for the kids. The home is close to the river that runs thru Kyoto with a huge bike/jog/walk path. It was very easy to access and a major treat for us all. Shimpei's home is equipped with the latest in technology and everything worked well. He also had a lot of toys that my 3 kids were grateful for. The beds were really comfortable. The bathroom and soaking tub was great-I wish we could take the talking bathtub home with us! It was so nice to be able to do laundry and the kitchen is stocked with very cool cookware-a cross between a pot and a wok-made cooking a breeze. Wifi was lightening fast and the neighborhood is residential yet close to everything, cafes, shops, grocery stores and restaurants. Very convenient to anything and everything by bus or subway. We felt as if we lived in Kyoto for a few days which was what we were after. I recommend Shimpei's place highly and hope to visit again in the future.

Thank you Jenny for the stay and such a detail explanation of the house and your experience, which I think will be beneficial to my future guests. Like your kids, most kids seem even more excited than their parents and I always like to see those kids enjoying. And thanks to my past three groups of guests, the house is now equipped with three kid helmets (perhaps sightly different in size with each other?). The house did not have beds for a long time until last October but I realized beds would be much easier when I myself stayed there for several days last year. I live on the other side of the river (Kamo-gawa river) and recently jog sometimes, never found such a suitable place for bike/jog/walk and relaxing in any other cities in Japan. Glad to know that the entire family enjoyed the early summer stay in the city and the house, and I look forward to your next visit in the future!

Hello Christ, my first friend in 四川, glad to know that the house and the stay gave you a memorable experience for you! Yes, the island kitchen was one of the charming points when I decided to purchase the property. It was also unforgettable experience to have dinner with you all in the nearby izakaya (居酒屋) and I liked the 四川 red chili pepper powder with the Japanese foods, a very innovative invention! Looking forward to see you all next time in Chengdu 成都! Shimpei
