Located at the foot of Kiyomizu Temple, my house 'Kiyomizu Shukuba' is a 90 year-old building. The building follows the original, traditional Kyoto-style residence architecture, with a living area on the second floor (Kiyomizu Shukuba), and a small restaurant on the first floor (Kiyomizu Tateba). Shukuba is an Edo-period word the Japanese used to refer to places to spend the night along the Gokaido roads, which once connected Edo (now called Tokyo) to the outer provinces. It relays our desire to have our guests relax and enjoy the culture, history and craftsmanship of traditional Japan. The building was renovated to honor the following two points: 1.Introducing the new while preserving the old. / 2. Emphasizing craftsmanship. Kiyomizu Shukuba preserves as many old features as possible while carefully introducing new ones. This is also true for fixtures. When possible, old original fixtures are kept and used. For new fixtures, only hand-crafted ones are used. All of Kiyomizu Shukuba’s walls are covered with Japanese traditional craft wallpaper, 'Tosa Washi'. Tosa Washi is hand-crafted, and has been produced for more than a thousand years using Japanese traditional style. Tosa Washi is also known as “the breathing paper” due to its moisture regulating qualities, which keeps rooms warmer during winter, and cooler during summer. You are welcome to touch and feel the elegance of the traditional Japanese residence and craftsmanship in every detail including fixtures and wallpaper. Since the owner will be running the casual restaurant on the first floor, please drop by anytime during opening hours. The casual restaurant in the first floor is open until early evening, so guests can be guaranteed comfortable, quiet nights. In case of emergency, the owner lives close by so I will reachable at hours when the casual dining area is closed. The concept behind Kiyomizu Shukuba is to provide guest the experience of not just traveling, but “living” in Kyoto. Perfect Location! Chika-san is an AMAZING host!
We have a family of 5 with 3 children. So, as you can imagine we have to plan every detail very carefully. This townhouse had authentic Japanese charm with many modern touches, spacious, and spotless. The location is on a quiet little street but within walking distance to many temples, shopping and restaurants. We can't speak highly enough of the Host Chika san. She quickly became a friend and personally went out of her way to help us with planning our entire stay! She also has a traditional cafe on the lower level that was delicious and once again had the old Kyoto vibe. We will absolutely be back and would highly recommend Kiyomizu Shukuba to anyone!

Beautiful townhouse delightful host!
We stayed for four days in this delightful townhouse that has been renovated beautifully. Chikako is a wonderful hostess who went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. She runs a small restaurant downstairs which I highly recommend for breakfast (Japanese or Western) or lunch that is great value. The two rooms are very tastefully appointed and comfortable. Everything is compact and sufficient for a wonderful stay. There are supermarkets within easy walking distance if you prefer to cook or walk to lots of nearby restaurants. The ability to loan an iphone at no charge for use makes travelling around Kyoto so easy. Many of the most popular sights in Kyoto like Gion and Kiyomizu Dera temple are within an easy walking distance and public transport is less than a 5 minute walk. We are looking forward to one day coming back and staying here! A tip=please use the map Chikako gives you to locate the place or taxi drivers will look a little blank

Perfect guesthouse, perfect location, incredible host.
We stayed in this beautiful, traditional guesthouse at the foothills of Kiyo Mizudera last week and couldn't have been happier that we did. The location is incredible - in a charming, traditional neighborhood. It was close to some of the most beautiful temples and an easy walk to Gion and downtown. Yet it was quiet at night. Chika is an extraordinary host and having grown up in Kyoto, she has a wealth of knowledge that she loves to share. She also runs a small cafe downstairs with delicious coffee. For a perfect stay in every way, I highly recommend Kiyomizu Shukuba.

Exactly what we were looking for
The unit is in an incredibly convenient neighbourhood that is wonderfully quiet at night. It is a 5 minute walk from Kiyomizu temple and about 10 minute walk from Gion. The neighbourhood gives a wonderful experience of "living like a local". The unit itself is impeccably clean and has everything we needed. The walls are covered in Japanese paper and the floors are all either hardwood or tatami mats. The futon beds were the most comfortable of any we slept on during our 3 week stay in Japan. The small kitchen was well stocked - we were able to make breakfast each morning. The shower/ bathtub was quite large compared to others we used during our stay. Chika (the owner) was very kind with a welcome drink when we arrived. She also has prepared a very thoughtful and comprehensive book of places of interest/recommendations which we found helpful. Chika also offers use of a portable wifi and iPhone during your stay. The quality and convenience of this unit was very high and is at a good price point.

Everything we needed in the perfect location
We were so lucky to find this charming two bedroom apartment - recently renovated to a very high standard and located in a quiet street just meters away from the busier boulevards of Higashiyama. It's compact but thoughtfully and creatively designed - two sunny bedrooms with confortable futons and pillows (even for my 6 foot 3 husband), a reasonably generous traditional Japanese bathroom with a great shower and lots of hot water, and a small kitchen eating area. The washing machine and dryer was a welcome bonus! Higashiyama is a lovely area as a base from which to explore Kyoto - with its own important temples and shrines, close to the restaurants and night life of Ginza and very close to the best coffee shop in Kyoto at % Arabica. Chika was a welcoming and considerate host - sourcing tickets for us to Miyako Odori performance at short notice. She's opening a small cafe below which will be serving breakfast and lunch and we did a 'practice' breakfast one morning which was delicious.

About the neighborhood
Kiyomizu Shukuba is well located on a quiet street in the Higashiyama-ward neighborhood, near some of Kyoto’s most famous temples and other historic landmarks. We are at the foot of the Kiyomizu Temple, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site that was established by Enchin over a thousand years ago. In addition to Kiyomizu temple, we are a 10-minute walk from other beautiful temples and shrines including: Sannenzaka, Kennin-ji Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Kodai-ji Temple, Rokuharamitsu-ji Temple, Sanjusangendo Temple and Chion Temple. Gion, known for its tradition of geiko (as geisha are referred to in Kyoto), old style tea houses and cobblestone streets is also just a walk away. The Kyoto National Museum is also nearby. The neighbourhood is perfect for wandering and relaxed strolls and provide unique opportunities for discovering special spots, such as senbei (Japanese crackers) and tofu making shops.
