Orange Walk, Orange Walk District
An elevated cabana of mainly native materials like thatch and sticks overlooking the Rio Hondo. It is decorated with Mayan and Nature art and has lights, flush toilet, shower, and shared kitchen. A canoe is available and it is within walking distance of cenotas. It is in a safe and quint village of 500 people with no bars or discos. Excellent for those wishing to slow down, write a book, paint, or learn the culture.

I loved my stay in San Antonio Rio Honda! This cabaña was exactly what I was looking for. It might not be for everyone, but glad it was for ME!
It is truly overlooking a beautiful tranquil river. It was clean and comfortable. Carmen and Juan were absolutely wonderful hosts. Their children delightful. They would have done anything for me, honestly.
I arranged this sort of last minute when another trip fell through with Rod, the only gringo in town. It is a small town, maybe 600 people, most of them kids. Farm workers, real country folks. This is truly in the middle of nowhere.
No stores exept a few things on shelves in peoples homes, same with restaurants, there are a few homes that offer tacos and fried chicken and riceandbeans Carmen is a GREAT cook and for a very small amount of money you can have your meals with her family. I TOTALLY recommend this. I wish I had known this ahead of time, I brought a bunch of food from Orange Walk as I just didn´t know...

About the neighborhood
There are two rooms for rent but only one is listed. The cabana is next to and is owned by the Jones family. Jose is a night watchman so he built the cabana so he could make extra money to send his four kids to school. The village is small, 500 residents including children so it is easy to walk around and talk to the people, most of whom speak English. You will see tiny kids to turkeys in the streets and wake up to roosters calling. It is very safe here even after dark. There is the river where you can fish and canoe, cenota for swimming, back roads through cane fields, pastures, and jungle to ride bikes or walk, visit the Mennonites, birdwatching, etc. There are no bars or discos. It is ideal to come to relax, take it easy, get to know the people, photograph, paint, write, and catch up o... more
