About the neighborhood
Perched on the sloping south side and on the top of a massive rock set in the middle of the sea, Monemvasia Kastro is swathed in history.
From Byzantine through Frankish, Venetian and Turkish times to today it reflects Greece's history itself.
Monemvasia is a fortified town on an island, one & half kilometres long, connected by a causeway to the mainland port/yacht marina of Gythera and sandy beaches.
Within the Kastro, an Archeological preservation area, is the ruined upper town (pano poli), with Agia Sophia and remains of Byzantine fortifications and houses; and the lower town (kato poli), with 13th century cathedral, 40 churches in all, museum in an old mosque, inhabited houses, hotels, shops, tavernas, cafe's and bars.

Bus connection from Athens (6 hours) and Kalamata (3 hours) to Gythera on mainland opposite Monemvasia itself - shuttle bus or taxi across causeway to Monemvasia Kastro.
Local car hire available from Kypros Car Rental and others.
Many visitors rent a car from airport, so they can explore the Peloponnese as well as enjoy island life on Monemvasia Kastro.
A visit by car in the Peloponnese can include, Corinth, Myceneae, Tiryns, Theatre of Epidaurus, Olympia, Sparta, Mistras, Mani, Koroni, Methoni and many more Classical and Crusader sites.
