The bedroom has plenty of space for a cot. The bathroom has a shower and bath. Upstairs the original wood window beams can be seen. Guests have a separate grassed area but also access to the owner's garden. We have a small wild flower area with a bench/table which is lovely for sitting on an evening. Guests have use of the owners' washing machine and tumble drier. We provide enough fuel for the stove free. Guests can bring dogs but they can't be left in the property without an adult there and aren't allowed up onto the furniture. The property is on the edge of the village and there is no through traffic passing by, making it quiet and safe. Opposite us is a farm barn and field which has lambs in spring. Renwick is ideal for walking, cycling and relaxing. The cottage is close to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty. For both walking and cycling there is an excellent variety of routes immediately from the house such as Renwick Fell on the lower Pennines and the C2C is nearby. Sunset from Renwick Fell, looking across the Eden Valley to the Lakes is often stunning. We have 2 bikes that are available for guests at no charge.. The owners send a great deal of information about the area to guests before they arrive. We are keen on outdoor activities and can offer advice on walks suitable for all levels of actviity. We also provide written guides for some local walks. The cottage has a customised OS map on the wall which shows the local area and centred on Renwick. There are 3 pubs with excellent eating facilities within 4 miles. Shops are about 10 minutes drive away in the village of Kirkoswald, (which won an award in the Britain in Bloom competition) and there is a Co-Op supermarket in Lazonby, which guests often go through on their way to the cottage. Lazonby also has a station, post office and petrol. There is lots to do in the area. The large Celtic Stone Circle of Long Meg and her Daughters is nearby. There is a working watermill at Little Salkeld about 5 miles away which has an excellent cafe and you can see the mill working. A short and easy walk takes you to Lacy's Caves, beside the Eden where in the 18th century a local landowner stored his wine - sadly now gone! This is is a lovely walk along the side of the Eden and salmon can sometimes be seen. The Settle to Carlisle train line stops at Lazonby about 5 miles away and makes a great day out, going across the Ribblehead Viaduct. Kirkoswald has a lovely church dating from the 12C. The RSPB site at Geltsdale is 25 minutes away and has just got Dark Sky Discovery Site status. Penrith is 20 minutes travel and has a cinema, supermarkets and other services expected in a large town. There is easy access to the Lake District from the cottage and Ullswater is about 30 minutes drive. Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald is also about 30 minutes drive. On the way is the small market town of Brampton. The present church is a splendid example of the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. This is the only church built by the architect Philip Webb and is adorned by an exquisite set of stained glass windows designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and manufactured by William Morris. There is a terrestrial TV (which gives Freeview) and a DVD player but not Satellite TV. We provide some DVDs.

The perfect quiet getaway.
We have just returned from a 4 night stay in the cottage, the cottage was cosy with everything that we needed. Due to the warm weather we didn’t need to use the log burner but it was nice that it was there in case. It was perfect for a relaxing stay to unwind with no unwanted interruptions from people or traffic, we would certainly recommend this to everyone and plan to return.

Spot on
This is a lovely little one bed cottage in a quiet village on the slopes of the Pennines. The rooms are a great size, kitchen has all you need, rural walked are on the doorstep, the Pennines and Lakes are an easy drive. All was clean and tidy on arrival. Do be aware that local shops are a few miles away, mobile and WiFi connection are poor/non existent. We’d definite return, it’s ideal for those wanting a good walking, quiet, comfortable break.

Cosy cottage in beautiful surroundings
Renwick is very quiet and in a beautiful part of the North Pennines. Dick was very welcoming and sent loads of info about the area before we arrived. The cottage is spacious for 2 people and was clean, warm and was well equipped for self catering. Lovely comfy bed, good shower and lots of storage space. Plus a very useful porch for wet/muddy boots and/or dog! Its location is great for the North Pennines and the Lakes (but much less crowded than staying in the Lake District itself). We visited Alston and took a trip on the South Tynedale railway - so friendly and dogs allowed on the train! We would love to visit again and would recommend this cottage.

Peaceful, comfortable cottage.
We had a lovely weekend at Thackmoor Nook. Richard was very quick at replying to messages and sending useful information. The cottage is really homely.it was a bit old when we first arrived as the lounge storage heater didn’t seem to be working despite being on - however we laid a fire in the wood burner and it was soon lovely and warm! We had everything we needed for our short break. It was lovely having our two labradors with us too. We spent Saturday walking in the Lake District for 10 hours, so really appreciated the pre arranged later departure on the Sunday. This gave us time to relax before tidying up the cottage. We enjoyed visiting Meg & her daughters and Lacy’s caves Sunday afternoon.

Simply beautiful
The cottage is lovely, tucked away in beautiful surroundings Richard welcomed us so warmly with a cup of tea and coffee, fresh local jam and marmalade in the fridge... simply lovely 😊 We were sent information regarding directions, local shops, restaurants and all the general information we required. The phone service wasn't the best (we were warned and expected it... especially with us being in the country).. Renwick is very small and pretty much silent for the majority of the time we were there. I'd recommend this place if you need to take a break, relax, inhale is clean air and see some wonderful views ❤️

A quiet stay
A pleasant cottage in a quiet, very quiet village. If peace is what you want you'll find it here. For those who are social media reliant the wifi/internet connection is very limited. Best time 5:30-7:30 am, after that pot luck. Host was friendly & welcoming.

Hi many thanks. Is there maybe a bit missing as the reference to pot luck doesn't seem to follow the previous bit?

About the neighborhood
Renwick is a small, quiet, farming village that nestles below the Pennines. Renwick Fell is literally on our doorstep and sunset, looking from the Fell across the Eden Valley to Blencathra and the Lakes, is often stunning (photo on the website). Occasionally the Northern Lights can be seen from the top, which is about an hours walk from the cottage. There are many walks to suit all ages and abilities, to the Fell, and in the valleys nearby, to the becks and rivers. Cycling is excellent in the area and the C2 is nearby. We have 2 bikes available for guests at cost. We have a range of maps in the cottage and can offer ideas for walks and cycling if needed. There is fishing available and salmon come up the Eden. There is plenty in the area to do, such as visiting Long Meg and her Daughters, an ancient Celtic stone circle. Lacys Caves, an 18th Century wine store on the banks of the Eden built in sandstone caves is a treat to visit (though sadly the wine is long gone). Close to in Little Salkeld is a working watermill which has an excellent teashop as well as courses on breadmaking etc. The ruins of Kirkoswald castle are nearby (photo also on the website). Other day trips could be on the magnificent Settle-Leeds line from Lazonby station, 8 minutes away which takes you across Ribblesdale Viaduct. The cottage is part of Thackmoor Nook which has our house, the guests cottage and a barn.Guests at the cottage are welcome to enjoy the garden and we are developing a wild flower area in the orchard. There are 3 excellent pubs with very good food within 10 minutes drive.
Getting around
There are many walks from the cottage and we have lots of information in the cottage. We're keen walkers and are happy to chat. This is a popular cycling route and the C2C runs nearby. There are no busses. Taxis can be used from Penrith station.

How to get there
We send full advice to guests about how to get here, with photos of the cottage and our house to help guests find us easily. The M6 is about 20 minutes away and Newcastle is 1 hour 15 minutes..
