My extended family group had a very comfortable week's stay in Old Mike's Cottage. We especially loved the large open common space and the big bookshelf with plenty of books and games to keep us occupied in the evenings. The view to the lake and Croagh Patrick from the upper yard was stunning morning, noon, and evening. The house made...

We stayed in 2014 and loved being back at Old Mike's Cottage again in 2016. It is a warm and homely base from which to explore the fabulous surrounding areas. Our two boys (age 5&7) also loved staying there. Definitely recommended.

Additional amenities & feature info
Old Mike's Cottage offers a welcome break from telephones and internet access.
There is traditional a living room with multi fuel stove in the original large open fireplace. Three bedrooms include an open loft and further to this is a cailleach bed (a bed in an alcove). This opening off the kitchen area was very common in thatched cottages in the west of Ireland .This alcove was often the sleeping quarters of the old woman of the house hence the name cailleach (old lady).

From her bed she was able to maintain a certain amount of discipline and exercise some discipline over children in a mother's absence. She was also kept within the family circle and was party to most family activities.

About the neighborhood
Westport, (Irish: Cathair na Mart), is a town in County Mayo, awarded the coveted title of Ireland's Tidiest Town in 2001, 2006 and 20. One of the few planned towns in Ireland, Westport was designed in the 18th Century by James Wyatt, commissioned by Lord Sligo of the stately Westport House, as a place for his workers and tenants to live. Today Westport is one of Ireland’s major tourist destinations. Located at the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, the town has many picturesque features, most notably its tree-lined, flower decorated, boulevard known as The Mall with several stone bridges over the Carrowbeg river.

The famous mountain Croagh Patrick, one of Europe's best known places of Pilgrimage, presents a striking backdrop to the town. This mountain,...
