Before You Arrive There are a few things that are useful to know before you come and stay at Wellhopegill Cottage. Climate: Nenthead has its own micro climate and due to its location and altitude in the northern climes of England, the temperature here can be significantly lower than other parts of the country, or even the local town 5 miles away. Whatever time of year you come; please equip yourself with warm clothing. The roads and paths can also become muddy, so please bring suitable footwear – wellingtons or good walking boots are ideal. At night it is really dark – bringing a torch is a good idea. Heating and Staying Warm: in the months leading up to winter and after (and summer if it is cool), to keep the cottage warm you need to supplement the central heating by using the multifuel stove in the lounge, which also helps keep the upstairs warm. The central heating in winter will not heat the cottage adequately. Using the stove is a great excuse to sit down, drink, chat, read or doze! If you have any problems with the stove ask Mark for help next door. Using the stove also keeps the electricity cost lower. Anthracite (high grade coal from a local mine) in the shed nearest the road (key is on the wooden wall panel) is provide for your use, this makes the fire easier to light and it generates more heat than logs and burns longer. Food Shopping: Nenthead has a community shop that is great for the basics, and more comprehensive supplies are available in Alston town (5 miles away). It has two mini supermarkets that are open till late, and some fantastic independent shops such as a butcher, chip shop and a delicatessen that offers cheeses, salamis, wholefoods and other nice foodie goodies. There is also a post office and petrol station. If possible please use the local shops for your shopping – it really helps the local economy and feeds money into the businesses directly - thank you. Midges (don’t panic!): Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland as well as Scotland are renowned for midges at certain times of the year. If there is a breeze you are quite safe, but if it’s still and calm they will be around, so bring insect repellent with you. Nenthead: The village is quite isolated, so getting to the shops or around the area can take longer due to winding roads and lots of hills, but in return for that you will get wonderful views and scenery! One thing that you will notice is how quiet it is, especially at night and early in the morning. Don’t forget to look at the night sky on a clear night, the amount of stars is dizzying – there is no light pollution. It's all part of being in the country! If you arrive when it is dark, a torch is a good idea to help light your way! Mobile Phones / Internet: There is no internet access at the cottage (this is a good thing!), but you can use your network provider via your mobile device. Reception is usually fine outside for O2 and Vodaphone, but inside some parts of the cottage might just have too thick a wall for the signal to get through. If you find this to be the case, just go near a window or outside. Four Legged Friends: Your dogs are welcome, but please respect the cottage rules. Dogs must not be allowed on the furniture, or upstairs and they must not be left alone in the cottage (howling and scratching the doors really disturbs our neighbours). Please bring a bed for your dog and have it sleep in the kitchen, clean wet and muddy dogs in the kitchen before letting your dogs into the lounge. Please use the ...More
