The region is known as 'Las Alpujarras' and is an enchanting part of Spain. Treasured by the Moors as a paradise location this mountainous area is situated between the summits of the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol. As a holiday destination it is ideal for walking, cycling, riding, photography, painting and the appreciation of flowers and wildlife; but most of all for just unwinding and taking time out. It is within easy striking distance of the historical city of Granada with its fabulous Alhambra Palace, yet is close enough to the coast to enjoy a well deserved day lounging on the beach. During the winter and spring you can even go skiing on the high slopes of the Sierra Nevada - less than two hours by car. Mulhacen is the highest peak in the area (and in mainland Spain) at a little under 3,500 metres. Cortijo Opazo is situated at 1,250 metres in the high Alpujarras and enjoys an excellent climate. The conditions of Andalucia in southern Spain ensure that there is plenty of sun during the winter months when the weather is usually warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing during the day. The summer months are hot but the altitude means that when evening comes there is always a delightful stream of cool air flowing down the valley from the high Sierras, a type of natural air conditioning.Formerly a working farmhouse, Cortijo Opazo can be found in the countryside near the villages of Pitres, Portugos and the area of La Taha, about 25kms from the town of Orgiva. It is surrounded by ancient terraces used today by shepherds and market gardeners.
The cortijo has been renovated to provide holiday accommodation in two delightful lodgings, Opazo Vista and Opazo JardÃn. These are both well appointed accommodation in a rustic style with comfortable furniture, well equipped kitchens and double bedrooms. Under floor heating throughout the accommodation. Living area is well furnished, wood burning stove for additional cosiness, and a selection of books and games to enjoy. Dining area with table and chairs. Kitchen is fully equipped with modern fitted units, fridge, full-sized electric oven, and a four ring ceramic hob with extractor fan. A good choice of china and kitchen ware is provided. Bathroom has a sink, toilet, and walk-in 'BodySpa' power shower. Double bedroom with a wardrobe, further hanging space, and two shuttered windows that look out to fabulous views of the mountains. Outside there's seating in both shady and sunny areas, and a fabulous garden, all looking across the valley below. Tables, chairs, loungers etc. are available.

We stayed at Cortijo Opazo for 10 days and had a wonderful time. The apartment was very comfortable, clean, and well maintained with a beautiful terrace and garden to enjoy the wonderful views and meals outside.
The position was perfect for us as we had no car but could walk to the village of Pitres for food supplies. It has a very good supermarket, and some lovely bars and a very good restaurant in Hotel San Roque.
The surroundings of the Cortijo were very peaceful with silence, and the occasional sounds of distant goat bells, dogs barking and cockerels crowing.
The highlight for us was the variety of walks we were able to do from the Cortijo without a car.Robert our host provided us with some local walking guides which was really great.Robert and William were great hosts who were available if we had any queries but not were not intrusive on our privacy.
The area is amazing and we really enjoyed exploring the local villages, walking around them via the ancient silk routes and old mule tracks that are very well maintained. There were some steep climbs up and down the valleys and villages so great for getting fit.We enjoyed fig, walnut, almond, olive ,chestnut and mulberry trees. There was always the sound of flowing water from the streams and rivers that flow down from the Snow melt of the Sierra Nevada.
I would really recommend Cortijo Opazo for a relaxing get away holiday and would certainly stay there again when we return to the area.

Beautiful, peaceful spot with breath taking views
As soon as we arrived at Cortijo Opazo our shoulders relaxed and we felt instantly at peace. Robert and William gave us the perfect holiday. Wonderful walks, lovely picnics and delicious home cooked meals, served in their beautiful garden and terrace. I fell in love with the area. Beautiful villages, breath taking views of the Sierra Nevada, and because of the water that flows down from the peaks along ancient irrigation channels, even after a dry summer, there is vegetation, including amazing sweet chestnuts, almond trees, olives and apple trees. I am planning my next trip back in the Spring!

Superb Alpujarran garden retreat
Even in early November, this is a breathtaking place to stay. The apartment is in a characterful cortijo set in the La Taha area of the Alpujarras. The friendly owners Robert and William have created a comfortable and tastefully furnished apartment (one of two) on the ground level. While having a private terrace, it enjoys access to the spectacular gardens they have lovingly crafted. These give unrivalled panoramic views over the landscape towards the coastal mountains. Although open to the public on certain days in the main season, we were lucky to enjoy almost exclusive use. The autumn colours in both the garden and the wider landscapes of the Poqueira and Trevelez valleys are superb. We did walks from the cortijo to the villages of La Taha including Pitres, Mecina and Portugos, and up towards Trevelez, the highest village in Spain on the lower slopes of the Sierra Nevada. All in all a great place to stay, but needs more than one visit if you want to appreciate the gardens through the seasons!

Perfect in every respect
Cortijo Opazo is simply perfect. The accommodation and its stunning views are outstanding and there is a sense of the beauty and timelessness of a rural mountain home. The owners are thoughtful and helpful but never intrusive and their walking guides are ideal. The evening meals were fabulous and the picnic lunches equally delicious. We had the fully inclusive package and it made life stress free from the moment we landed in Spain to the moment we left. The holiday was a complete delight.

Silence is golden amid serene surroundings
Located in the La Taha area of La Alpujarra, Cortijo Opazo is ideally located to explore this treasure trove of an area in southern Spain.
The villages of Pitres, Portugos, Bubion, Trevelez, Capileira, Ferreirola, Atalbeitar are just a handful of places to visit during your stay.
The walks in this area are a delight. Walks of all types, duration and ease/difficulty and the owners of Cortijo Opazo offer you a booklet full of suggested walks with detailed instructions. Breath in the fresh air and savour the scenery.
You don't have to go far if you don't want to. Simply enjoy the gardens of Cortijo Opazo, at all times of the year. Savour the sound of silence. The peace and tranquillity. Sit outside at night time and look at the stars. No light pollution so you'll see stars you've likely never witnessed previously. In the summer months, listen to the superb sound of a nightingale.
We stayed in the La Corona apartment for the first time. It was in December but the underfloor heating ensured we were warm at all times. The apartment was very comfortable and we slept better than we do at home. Comfortable bed and a kitchen that had everything we needed for a very enjoyable self catering holiday.
We can recommend places to eat in La Alpujarra, an area we have known well since 2003. Look out for our reviews of such restaurants.
As for Cortijo Opazo, it wasn't our first time there and it will not be our last. We frankly see no point in staying anywhere else in the delightful, often overlooked area of Spain. A warm welcome from Robert and William, perfect hosts for a perfect, peaceful holiday.

Absolutely superb experience!!!
We stayed in Cortijo Opazo for 4 days at the end of September. From the get go the hospitality of Robert and William made our short stay so memorable. The location and environment are stunning and it is the kind of place that makes you relax. The accomodation is excellent , full of character and with all you need for a lovely stay. Dining on the balcony in the evening was made all the more special by the availability of fresh herbs from the garden. This is a little piece of heaven and we will surely be back. We are already looking forward to our stay in La Herradura in the new year.

The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the style of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.
Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, canyoning, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including a vegetarian establishment. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there is no need to leave.
Getting around
Most guests choose to hire a car and this is the easiest way to reach us and to travel around and see the sights. Car hire is reasonable economical in Spain. There is a bus service to the area from Granada which runs three times a day. With careful planning it is possible to arrive here on a bus from Granada or Malaga, and since the shops are only a short walk from the Cortijo (1.5km) it is possible to enjoy a relaxing holiday here without a car - many of our in house walks start and finish at Cortijo Opazo.
