The space The sheltered harbour of Fowey is a truly magical destination, and Rose Cottage is just a short stroll up the hill from the centre of this quintessential Cornish fishing village. Open the gate to the property and you’ll discover the private, enclosed patio garden. It’s such a sun trap that in the spring and summer months you’re bound to spend some time here simply enjoying the Cornish sun. The interior is lovely and bright, thanks to the neutral tones that make the most of all that seaside light. The spacious living room comes with a ‘rainy day cupboard,’ where you’ll find board games, books and DVDs to keep the little ones entertained. In the kitchen there’s a dining table and chairs to seat six, so plenty of room for you to enjoy meals together. The story goes that Rose Cottage was originally the home of the local milliners and hatmakers of Fowey. It’s certainly ideally located for everything that the town has to offer. You can stroll down the hill to the beach at Ready Money Cove or to wander along the harbourside where you can take a ferry to Polruan on the other side of the river. As with most properties in Fowey, Rose Cottage doesn’t have its own parking. There’s space outside to load and unload, but for overnight and longer stays please use one of the town’s public car parks. This holiday at a glance Sleeps four guests. One double bedroom. One twin bedroom. Family bathroom. Patio garden. WiFi. Although there is no designated parking it is possible to load and unload outside the house (please see Notes for further details). Children of all ages welcome. Two small well-behaved dogs welcome (small additional charge). Minimum three night stay. Additional features Smeg oven with electric hob. Large fridge/freezer.. Microwave. Dishwasher. Washer/dryer. LCD television with Freeview and DVD player. Selection of games, toys and DVDs. Radio. Cot, high chair and bed guard available on request. Garden furniture. Charcoal barbecue. Attractions and nearby amenities For a different view of the harbour, take the Polruan ferry over the River Fowey. The ferry departs every 10 or 15 minutes and it’s a delightful way to get started on the South West Coast Footpath. During your stay in Fowey, you really should visit St Catherine’s Castle, one of two artillery forts that were built by Henry VIII to defend the harbour. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views are worth it. After coming back down, you’re in the perfect place for a spot of sunbathing at Ready Money Beach. Narrow streets, steep hills, quaint fishing cottages and a working harbour – no, we’re not describing Fowey, but Mevagissey an equally charming Cornish destination. There are lots of seafood restaurants tucked away in the maze of lanes and streets here. Once you’ve enjoyed some fresh fish, why not spend the afternoon at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a Victorian gem that was rediscovered and brought back to its former glory in the 1990s. Further inland from Fowey is the town of Lostwithiel, This Norman town saw a lot of fighting in the Civil War, and much of it was rebuilt in the 17th century. There are plenty of antique shops to wander through – look out for a bargain! Not far from Lostwithiel is Restormel Castle, a perfectly round, 13th century ruin that stands proudly on a mound above the River Fowey. See if you can spot the famous black pheasants. A short drive away is the Eden Project, a spectacular destination built in the heart of a disused clay pit, with unique ‘biomes’ filled with tropical and Mediterranean plants. This is a gardener’s paradise, and a fun and fascinating day out for all the family too.

Very tired, very damp & unhygienic and needs massive improvement and terrible customer service.
What greeted us after a long 6 hour journey was so disappointing. Starting with the garden, it hadn’t been tended to for weeks, the patio was black and needed jet washing, overgrown bushes all round and leaves all over the ground. The garden bench was broken and unusable and the rush doormat threadbare and the front of the house was covered in bird muck. The key safe was old and doesn’t open every time, on one occasion it took 15 minutes to open - highlighted on a previous review which still hasn’t been fixed. The biggest issue greeting us was the rubbish. Bin day in Fowey is Thursday which is good timing given changeover is Friday, but only if the previous guests can be bothered to put it out which ours didn’t. So we were greeted with 5 huge bags of rubbish and recycling on our doorstep which was rotting throughout our stay - management company declined to remove it. Once inside we were welcomed by the overwhelming smell of damp. The small hallway had damp up the walls and paint peeling away and the living room had damp covered over three out of four walls, the chimney breast was literally dripping in water (we have videos). There was also no internal doormat and given we were bringing rain and dirt in from the outside into the hallway, the hallway got really wet and dirty immediately. Back to the living room where we immediately found huge stains on the carpet - about 12” x 12” in size and the sofas looked as though they’d been taken from a crack den having lost all their shape and covered in marks, stains and felt tip pen, the cushions were equally as filthy. The kitchen was disgusting with balls of dog hair on the floor, cob webs and dust covering everywhere. The fridge freezer is housed in a cubby hole and the stench from there is almost toxic from the damp. The microwave is about 20 years old and had rust on the inside and the kettle lid was broken and won’t come off, the handle is left to balance on the top to leave three sharp screws protruding. The cooker is a Smeg but very old with the operating diagrams worn off the front of the cooker and the digital display broken as well. The cupboard under the stairs is rammed with ‘stuff’, ironically there are also four pots of mould resistant paint and stain cover up, make of that what you will. The welcome pack was hilarious, just some sachets of tea and coffee but the icing on the cake was a cleaning pack, the irony of this was not lost on us. The bedrooms are a bit better albeit in the twin room each of the beds have a mattresses that are 12” shorter than the bed frame so anyone who is remotely tall will have their feet dangling over the edge. The bed linen and towels were new and clean and of good quality but the throws on the end of each bed needed washing. The bathroom needs a complete makeover, the laminate flooring has suffered water damage and has warped and the laminate is coming off the wooden boards. The same applies to the wooden bath panel which also has water damage and blown the top of it apart. The radiator is covered in rust and so too is the towel holder. The plug to the sink is broken (and filthy) and there is no extractor fan in the bathroom (also broken) and so there is instruction to leave the window open instead. There are no tooth brush holders or glasses and no toilet roll holder either. Further issues are that builders are working next door at the attached cottage and woke us us banging every morning, albeit this isn’t the owners fault, but a note of caution at least. So, as soon as we got there we called the management company who could do nothing that day due to the time of the night (6pm), so we decided to clean the house ourselves and we went out and bought throws for the sofas and an internal doormat and air fresheners. The management company said they were already aware of the carpets and sofas so clearly this had been reported before but nothing done and they also stated a doormat couldn’t be used as it wouldn't allow the door to be opened, funny that, we went out and bought one that worked just fine. The next day the management company stated they could get a cleaner over and provide a doormat, we informed them there was no point due to us cleaning it ourselves and buying one. They said they couldn’t get the carpets or sofas cleaned due to no breaks in the holiday bookings but we were happy for them to come whilst we were there but this wasn’t facilitated. They also said they couldn’t do anything about the damp but advised to put the heating on, this didn’t work and we were left with the damp all week which got worse and worse each day despite there being no rain fall during our stay, it was shocking. Our experience was compounded by the customer service we encountered, in a nutshell nobody cared. The owners will no doubt respond below and say they offered to resolve all the issues and that we refused (this was the drum they were banging) they didn't at all, in fact they didn't contact us once during our stay or anytime after, not even a text or any form of apology, this is now 5 weeks on. The management company were also hopeless, again there was no contact from our second day onwards. The only thing the owners told Sykes Cottages (who we booked through) during our stay was to ask us to leave early and they would reimburse us, that was on the afternoon of our last day! After the holiday Sykes phoned the owners, left voicemails and sent emails but they didn’t respond to any until two weeks later when they refused to offer any form of apology or reimbursement. Sykes were terrible for help and support, I spoke to them every day of our stay and for two weeks after. In total I spoke to 10 different advisors and each one, bar India, fobbed me off. I asked to speak to a manager on numerous occasions and not one phoned. During three weeks of complaints Sykes didn’t call me once, I had to phone them 18 times over 3 weeks to get any sort of answer from them. Be warned, they are only booking agents and cannot or will not provide any form of protection to the customer, it’s between you and the owners. It’s such a pity, Fowey is a gorgeous Cornish town, if only Rose Cottage was the same.

Disappointing stay at Rose Cottage Fowey
We were looking forward to our stay at Rose Cottage in August 2022. On arrival at the cottage the small but pleasant outside area was dominated with the previous occupants recycling and a large box of empty bottles. The owner informed us that this was unavoidable as they rely on renters disposing of rubbish, as the cleaning company is not insured to deal with it. Numerous issues were also evident in the house too, in the bathroom which given the hefty rental we wouldn’t have expected.

Sweet cottage within easy reach of Fowey
Absolutely perfect cottage for us! A gentle stroll into the heart of Fowey from where we took the ferry across the estuary and walked and walked and walked!! The cottage itself is spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Evenings spent in the sitting room were a little on the chilly side due to the fact that a cold draft whooshed down the chimney and through the large central fireplace. Having read previous reviews we were forewarned and brought thick jumpers with us.

An attractive and well-equipped cottage
Rose Cottage is a lovely dwelling in a convenient and pleasant location in one of our favourite holiday destinations. It has everything we needed and was generally clean and tidy when we arrived. However, we were somewhat reluctant users of the oven which looked as though it had not been cleaned for some time. This apart we had a very enjoyable stay.

Lovely cottage for a long weekend
The cottage is pretty, quiet, comfortable and convenient. It's only a few minutes' walk (downhill) into Fowey for shops and cafes. Everything was ready when we arrived; the kitchen is well-equipped and the whole house very pleasant. Parking is a few minutes' walk (uphill) and costs £8.00 for a whole day and evening (there's a weekly rate too). We had no difficulty parking by the house for a few minutes to drop off luggage. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Lovely cottage
Really lovely cottage in a great location. Very close to local shops and pubs and the car park is very close (if you don't mind hills). We had a 8 month baby with us and the house was perfectly suited. Will definitely be returning

About the neighborhood
Fowey is a beautiful yet secluded spot in South Cornwall. As it is not a town that many 'pass through' it has managed to escape the more commercial side of tourism and retains a lovely laid back but quietly sophisticated feel. Those that visit, feel they have found somewhere special, hence why so many return year after year. As a harbourside town there are beautiful views through many small gaps in the houses to the water and boats with many boat trips operating from the harbour, on trips upriver and across to the small pretty facing town of Polruan. The shops are perfect for pottering around with a fantastic array of specialist stores from a traditional sweet shop to the fishmongers and artisan bakers. Cafes and restaurants focus on quality with an elegant tea rooms and cosy Bistro alongside luxury riverfront restaurant dining, ideal for tasting the local Fowey River mussels. Just a short walk along the Esplanade the Fowey Hotel provides the perfect setting for a Cornish cream tea with a view and pitstop before reaching the delightful sheltered bay of Readymoney Cove. Fowey is the perfect place to enjoy a getaway holiday but whilst feeling like you have everything you need on your doorstep in a beautiful location. Within easy reach along the coast are great walking trails and beaches from the open sands at Par to Polkerris with its watersports, pub and gallery. Across the river is the stunning Lantic Bay and picture postcard Talland Bay.
