During the winter months, I am happy to offer special rates for mid-week four-night breaks, Monday to Friday, please just ask for a price. Child and pet friendly, Furzeland Down Cottage sits on the edge of the Walkham valley, within Dartmoor National Park. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and also within a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cottage is well insulated, cool in summer and warm in winter. A lot of thought has gone into its layout and decor, creating an uncluttered, open plan, bright yet warm, family-friendly space. Guests have described it as giving you a hug. The kitchen is aimed to please those who enjoy cooking, you will find everything from an electric whisk to a wok, with a good selection of sharp preparation knives, bottle openers and vegetable peelers. The kitchen is aimed to please those who enjoy cooking, you will find everything from an electric whisk to a wok, with a good selection of sharp preparation knives, bottle openers and vegetable peelers. There's plenty of glassware, from champagne flutes to tumblers, smart matching cutlery and quality Denby crockery. In the living room, there is a comfortable six seat L shaped sofa, an antique 2 person chair bench and a rocking chair. The large old farmhouse pine table comfortably accommodates 8. There is an under-stair laundry area, which houses a washing machine and a tumble dryer, there is also a washing line in the garden. There are five comfortable beds in four rooms, a 1 x 4' 6', 1 x 5', 2 x 3' twins and 1 x 3' on the mezzanine. There are a good selections of books and family friendly games. For your safety, there is a heat alarm, two smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide gas detector. In the kitchen, there is a fire blanket and fire extinguisher. At the top of the stairs, there's a baby gate for those travelling with little ones. Outside there are 20 acres which you are welcome to explore and enjoy the birdsong and country air, there is a map of the grounds which you'll find in the info folder. Among other things, you may well see the family of fallow deer and the badgers that live here. Enjoy a complimentary cream tea on arrival with fresh, homemade scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream. Next to the cottage is your own private enclosed garden with large picnic bench, outdoor table tennis table, football goal, netball hoop and charcoal BBQ. On a hot day take a plunge in the pool before setting off to explore the area, there is so much to see and do. We can help you with an itinerary if you wish, as throughout the summer months there are various agricultural shows, village shows, food festivals, outdoor music and theatre experiences to enjoy. Through the cooler months, there is still plenty on offer and wonderful places to visit and the roads are that little bit quieter. If you like bluebells the woodland at Furzeland Down looks stunning from mid April to late May. We look forward to meeting you. RosemaryMore

Interaction with guests
I will be on hand to welcome you on the day of your arrival and often at home or at the end of the phone line if you have any queries during your stay. If you arrive late I can give you the key safe code. Guests sometimes text me for suggestions of what to see or do...such as where to get a steam railway ride, the best rock pooling beaches, where to get the best Chinese takeaway or fish and chips and so on.... On the morning of departure I am also available to take back the key and wish you a safe onward journey.

About the neighborhood
The ancient Stannary town of Tavistock was recently voted best market town in England and is a few minutes drive away. It has a very interesting indoor pannier market, Abbey ruins, restaurants, bistros, cafes and pubs, a lovely river walk, eclectic shops, indoor pool and arts centre. It is the largest town in West Devon, with fine architectural buildings built by the the 7th Duke of Bedford. We are 25 minutes from Plymouth with spectacular views across the Sound and the Barbican being a particular draw. Just across the road from the property is the national cycle route 27, where you can cycle or walk to North Devon in one direction and Plymouth in the other. Then there's 368 square beautiful miles of Dartmoor National Park to discover.
Getting around
Ideally by car to see what this beautiful area has to offer but car and bike or car and walking boots works well.
