Extensively refurbished in 2008, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform! Heating is provided by a wood burning stove (logs are provided) and two night storage heaters. It is cosy and warm in winter. In summer the thick walls, and windows on both sides help you keep cool. The most amazing building for a unique break
We booked for three nights over New Years Eve and the guidance on how to find the Gatehouse and then how to access it were well written and easy to follow. We were able to do all of this in the dark with a torch and it actually added to the excitement! The guides on how to use the facilities such as lighting the wonderful fire were also spot on and i was pleasantly surprised by how good the shower was. We booked breakfast and some evening meals and everything we needed was there other than a frying pan for eggs but we were able to improvise! We went up on top of the “turret” at midnight on New Years Eve to watch the fireworks which was a genuinely memorable experience Juliet left us a bottle of Prosecco which was a lovely touch and I liked the fact we were near to their beautiful home but also let to ourselves so it was totally peaceful and romantic. I loved the dressing area which is up the spiral staircase its a lovely space The only change would be to make the access to the mezzanine bedroom easier to access with a proper night light. I have a little vertigo and I would have found it more comfortable to be able to walk down the stairs looking forward to the living area if the steps has been tilted that way, although I do understand why its been done that way. However nothing could detract from the whole experience - it truly is memorable and unique and there has been a lot of love and attention put into the guest experience and the building itself. The guide to the local area was a lovely personal touch and we had a Christmas tree and mistletoe! Thank you so much for a stay we can’t stop thinking and talking about - we will definitely return!

A magical place
I originally wanted to book this as a surprise birthday treat for my husband but the date was unavailable. I booked a later date as a late treat instead. Little did I know that it was just the right weekend to book. We'd had a very tough few weeks and so when we arrived, it was as if a huge weight lifted from us as we soaked up the atmosphere of the place. Some buildings retain a certain character and this building fills you with peace, calm and happiness. I echo what everyone says about the stairs, they are very old, very narrow and very steep so it's worth bearing that in mind. The view from the tower is amazing - we were lucky to get a sunny autumn day, so we watched the sun set from the top. We climbed back up at night to look at the stars and again in the morning with a cuppa. It was amazing. The little castle has everything you need (except a frying pan) and the hosts were kind enough to supply a bottle of wine, butter, milk, Welsh cakes and chocolate. We had a brief excursion to the local pub, which was friendly, before heading back, lighting the fire and cooking a meal. It was a shame it was just for one night as our budget is limited, but it was enough to help us both shake off the traumas of the previous weeks, so we left feeling calmer and happier. I had asked the host (Juliet) if we could stay a little later just so that we could take our time in the morning, have a walk and a cooked breakfast. Generously she said we could stay until 11:30, which made such a difference as we didn't feel rushed or in a hurry to leave. It's truly a magical place and we felt lucky to have a share in just a small piece of its history. It's a memory that both my husband and I will cherish and smile over again and again.

Another WOW!!
My Wife(Susie) &I Stayed here for 5 nights, choosing The Gate house as a base for our visit to Chepstow for the racing & exploring other areas around(Cardiff is MUST place to visit) On arrival from along the private drive it was Another WOW from us both.. What a building, you just 'feel the history' from this place especially from the gates & the little entry door. Inside were all the amenities you could wish for with the added touch of a little food hamper. After a day of exploring it was so good to return 'home' to our little castle & to be able to access one of the towers was FABULOUS with AMAZING views. It was also good to meet Juliet(owner) on arrival & departure for a little chat. Just to add a few bits of info. if you need a taxi try K&M from Chepstow, they were really helpful after we'd exhausted the list in the visitors book Food - pop to the farm shop close to Mathern on the A48. Chepstow race course(the view restaurant) Chepstow town/Castle..the town itself is ok for a look around but not that much to see(a little disapoining) but the Castle is A MUST to visit if you like your history Tintern Abbey.. So tranquil & peaceful, but give the adjacent pub a miss if you want to eat, it was very disappointing. A not on eating out, we found a few places not serving at lunch time(midweek) even though on their websites it was saying they were opening, so best to call them to confirm first. We made the mistake of travelling to the Lion at Trellech to find the pub open, but not for food. Cardiff. Weve never been before but will certainly return for a weekend stay, we loved it here. Finally - The Millers Arms in Mathern Village. A 10 minute walk. Very good home cooked food, the steak night was excellent value & with a friendly atmosphere, just a pity there isn't really a 'lounge area' to just sit & enjoy a drink & a chat, it is geared up for dining. Thanks again for a FABULOUS STAY Dave & Susie

Stunning, comfortable, peaceful, remote yet close to everything
This place is truly unique. A castle to yourself. And they have thought of everything, from dressing gowns to Welshcakes, milk, bread, butter and jam! The fire was roaring within minutes of our arrival, it was lovely and warm. We cannot fault it. It is the perfect place to stay and we definitely recommend it. Great views. The top of the tower experience is extraordinary (it would be a great and unusual place to propose marriage). The bed was really comfortable. Just remember there are stairs! So bring small bags.

Our own castle
Booked as a surprise - when we turned up - WOW! We had our own castle for a couple of days. In through a wicket gate within a much larger set of double gates and turn into a doorway leading to a spiral stone staircase to a floor above the gate itself. All the comforts of home but in an ancient setting and a ladder up to the mezzanine floor to bed and a wood burning stoke should it get too cold. Close to the first Severn crossing which could be seen from yet another set of spiral stone stais to the roof with all round views and a long way down to the ground below. A pub close by and Chepstow just as short drive away we had a great stay and enjoyed both the garden and talikng with the owners.

Fab quirky weekend stay!
Booked this as a surprise weekend away for my husbands 30th as he has always said he's wanted to his own castle. Such a fab quirky place to stay he absoloutely loved it! From the moment you step through the door your in awe of the original features, just stunning! After a small hike up the spiral staircase- don't bring large bags! You enter the main living area, really have made the best of the available space and has every amenity you will need, all kitchen utensils, cooker, kettle, microwave and fridge. Upstairs the sleeping area is fab, bed was really comfy and you feel safe all tucked away. Bathroom has everything you need and also some toiletries are provided. If you carry on further up the stairs there is another seperate storage/dressing area and then further up the top the turret! Just fabulous views! Great location, short walk down the road to the Millers arms pub which we went to for drinks and brunch so would recommend. Great for getting to the Forest of Dean and Chepstow. All in all a fab weekend away, the owners have been incredibly helpful and accommodating as our original booking in May was cancelled due to lockdown but they let us move it no problems and have been great at responding through the whole process and even got in touch to offer us a slightly later checkout. Great little welcome basket on arrival as well- they really have thought of everything, you will not regret booking a stay here!

Perfect
A gift from my parents for my 28th birthday to stay at the Welsh Gatehouse, which has been perfect from start to finish. The most relaxing and beautiful destination and property. We can not wait to return and will be recommending. Thank you for sharing this gem with us, lovely hosts who offered us a late check out which meant we got to enjoy our last morning for that little bit longer. The Welsh Gatehouse exceeded all expectations.

Fantasy becomes reality in this cosy space!
The Welsh Gatehouse is a rare and beautiful find. Immediately upon arrival one recognises that is a very special property (and that is before you find the extensive history section in the 'User Guide'). The Gatehouse itself can be found down a long tree lined driveway. Inside you will find an immaculate flat with a great fireplace, tidy kitchen and very comfortable bed in the mezzanine bedroom. It really is very romantic. The Gatehouse is secluded yet not far from pubs and restaurants. the Wye Valley is a short drive away and there are loads of very good walks in the area. This place is a great escape that I can't recommend nearly enough. We will certainly be going back.
