The Old Sweet Shop in Minehead is a quintessential chocolate box cottage located in the quietest and prettiest part of this coastal town. It's a seventeenth century, thatched, luxurious, self-catering holiday cottage that can sleep up to 8 guests in four bedrooms, plus a hot tub in the cottage garden! The property has served many purposes over the years, most notably as the local sweet shop. Some of the neighbours can remember buying gobstoppers, and ice creams here on the way to and from school in the 1950s. Some of the neighbours can remember buying gobstoppers, and ice creams here on the way to and from school in the 1950s. The property has undergone an extensive and sympathetic restoration to maximise the cottage's space and light, beautiful sweeping staircase, impressive beams, and large fireplace with a wood burner. The old, complements the new perfectly in The Old Sweet Shop. The spacious sitting room has a large fireplace with a wood burning stove. Look carefully and you'll see the burns shaped like pear drops on the large wooden mantelpiece. These ancient marks were made when a hot poker, taken straight from the open fire, was used to stir cider as a hot toddy! There are charming mullion lead-framed windows with pretty seats as well as comfortable sofas and armchairs. You'll also find a large flat screen smart TV with Sky, Netflix and Blu-ray DVD player and BT WiFi, plus films, books, jigsaws, games, and toys suitable for all ages. With views into the garden, the spacious kitchen/diner is perfect for family gatherings; the large oak table seats 8 guests and is an enjoyable sociable space where you can cook, chat, play games and enjoy afternoon tea. The well-equipped kitchen has a dual fuel range style cooker, microwave, fridge and storage space. The utility room houses a washing machine, tumble-drier, a large fridge-freezer, iron, and a vacuum cleaner. There is also a toilet on the ground floor. For guests with babies or small children, we can provide a high-chair, two travel cots (please bring your own cot bedding) and stair gates. Four tastefully decorated bedrooms, (two on the ground floor) each with their own bathroom, sleep up to eight guests. Three doubles (two with king-size beds) and one twin bedroom. The bedrooms feature antique furniture, high-quality mattresses and furnishings, crisp bedding and soft towels complement the character of each room, all of which have a confectionery theme. Upstairs, Marshmallow, a luxurious king bedroom, is a large airy room with a stunning en-suite bathroom with a roll top bath. Lemon Drop is the twin room with en-suite with shower. On the ground floor, Strawberry Sherbet, a double, is the original shop and retains the distinctive bay window which we decorate with seasonal displays, and Refresher, with a gorgeous king four poster bed and a large shower, is a light and airy room. Outside is a pretty cottage garden with a lawn edged with borders, two patio areas, with picnic tables, a summerhouse, and a large relaxing hot tub with soft lighting for a night-time dip under the stars. Exmoor National Park is an International Dark Sky Reserve and one of the best places in England to see the stars in the night sky. Please be advised that due to the nature of the buildings and their surroundings we do not supply or allow barbecues. Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement for 30 GBP per dog (max. of two). Please do not allow your dogs on the furniture and do not leave them alone in the property at any time. Strictly no smoking. Off-road parking for two cars. Quality bed linen and towels are provided (bring your own beach towels for use in the hot tub). Heating and electricity included. A welcome basket of logs and kindling provided for the fire, with information on where to buy locally. You can access The Old Sweet Shop from 5pm on arrival day and departure is by 10am on your last day. Security deposit A security deposit of 250 GBP is required when booking this property. For some of us, our fourth visit in less than 18 months (and for two of us our second in four weeks)! That’s how much we love it here. We’ve made full use of all the excellent facilities, from the hot tub to the slow cooker. After a wet start to the week, we’ve had mainly sunny and very mild weather. A plan to walk the coast path from Watchet back to Minehead following a steam train ride was frustrated by a cliff fall just outside the town. However, we did manage the route from Lynmouth to Rockford via Watersmeet and back, a lovely 7.5 mile outing. Thanks Lucy and team for another great stay. We’ve already booked our next visit!

We had three wonderful nights at the sweetshop cottage! A wonderful, historic cottage but with all the modern comforts that you could wish for! The cottage is beautifully maintained, scrupulously clean and a pleasure to spend time in. We especially appreciated the personal emails and contact that we had both prior to and after our visit.

“We don’t want to go home! Four ladies, each with a bedroom we adore! We love everything about The Old Sweet Shop, all the little touches have made our stay so enjoyable. Everything is so clean and there is everything you could need. The garden is so lovely, we couldn’t each area in such a just a weekend. The location is great, we explored the church and it’s just a short walk to the high street and esplanade. We definitely recommend staying and are looking forward to our next excuse to visit. Lucy, you should be so proud of this property and thank you so much for all your advice about the surrounding area – and the chocolate cake!”

What can we say? The cottage is even more beautiful in real life – very clean and with everything you could want. The beds are very comfy. It is situated in a lovely quiet spot, while not far from anywhere. Seafarer Fish and Chips on Alcombe Road were simply the tastiest we have ever had! The Golden House Chinese at the bottom of the road was also very good. Dunster Castle was good, and the vintage train ride too – we love a train ride! We had some nice long walks. Coming from Norfolk, the hills were good at getting our hearts pumping. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Old Sweet Shop. Thanks to everyone for a fabulous stay.”

What a lovely review! We are so glad you enjoyed the comfort, cleanliness and style of The Old Sweet Shop cottage. The cottage is located in a beautiful part of Minehead’s ‘Higher Town’ and not far to walk downhill into town. Many of our guests love the steam train and it is definitely worth a visit, as is Dunster Castle. We hope to welcome you back one day.

We arrived to a beautiful homely cottage. The sweet smell on opening the door was amazing, each room had a beautiful diffuser, The cottage was immaculately cleaned and a lovely lemon cake left for us. The kitchen had every utensil needed for our stay. The garden is stunning, I particularly liked sitting in the summer house admiring the views, well done to the gardener, he was soaked tending to it on our stay. We loved the hot tub, great to come back to after a long day, the lady who tendered to it daily was very nice. We visited Dunster Castle, Lynton (no parking so we couldn’t stay) which was such a shame as it looked so pretty, Watchet. Porlock, Exeter and watched the Steam Train depart. Minehead itself was a little disappointing. I would thoroughly recommend The Old Sweetshop, my husband read the history about the shop, it is fascinating. I’d like to thank Lucy, you were very kind to us, the cleaning team for the hard work making the cottage a splendid place to stay and the hot tub lady (sorry. I can’t remember your name!) for keeping it clean for us to use. You all made our stay fantastic xxx

We’ve had a wonderful stay in The Old Sweet Shop. It completely exceeded our expectations. The cottage had everything we could possibly want and more! The dogs loved all the different areas in the garden. It was great to have a shaded area as the weather was so hot. We ate twice in The Old Ship Aground. The food was lovely and reasonably priced. We had a lovely roast dinner at The Quay Inn – very good value for money and all our plates were empty! We did the Tarr Steps walk with our dogs. It was wonderful, very scenic and the dogs loved jumping in and out of the river. We crossed the ancient giant stone bridge – amazing! And at the end, we ate ice creams in the Tarr Farm Inn. We were too early for lunch but the menu looked lovely. We also took a walk in Dulverton. The dogs were off the lead all the way as there was no livestock. Part of the route followed a river and the rest was woodland which at some points was quite steep. This was fantastic as it was almost all in the shade – great for all in the hot weather. We had a superb lunch at The Bridge Inn. We also visited Dunster Castle, beautiful gardens, a watermill and lots to see within the castle. We had a lovely lunch in Tessa’s Tea Rooms in the village – where there are lots of vegan and gluten-free options. Our trip was made a little more special by taking the steam train one stop from Minehead to Dunster. We were very impressed with how close we were to the town centre where you can pick up everything you need. We loved the Flapjackery in Minehead – lots to choose from. Will definitely be back!

We are so glad you had a wonderful summer holiday at The Old Sweet Shop. There is so much to do Exmoor, some of it right on our doorstep in Minehead and Dunster and it sounds like you made the most of all the activities on offer. There are great places to eat too, from pubs to tea rooms, and we’re glad you got to visit some of our favourites. Clearly your dogs had the best break possible as well. We’re delighted you’re already planning on a return stay with us, and look forward to seeing you in 2023!

We have had a fabulous week in your beautiful cottage. We have enjoyed every moment we have spent here. We particularly enjoyed the hot tub and the wonderful garden. It is so lovely to have a large kitchen and a large table for sociable meals together. The bedrooms are very comfortable and good nights were had by all. The cottage is so close to the town centre and easy to walk to the restaurants, cinema, and food shops. And only a few more minutes to the sea!

Dear Mary Rose, thank you for taking the time to post a review about your stay at The Old Sweet Shop. We’re glad you found the kitchen and dining area sociable and perfect for your party, and that you enjoyed great sleep in the comfy beds. Minehead has lots to offer families and groups of adults alike, the beach is great to visit at any time of year, and the new cinema offers great priced tickets so it’s a fabulous edition to the town.

This is the 3rd time we have been to a holiday cottage of Exmoor Holiday Cottages but our first time to the Old Sweet Shop. What a beautiful holiday home, equipped to the highest standard and absolute spotless perfection. The garden is so pretty and the hot tub was wonderful! We couldn't have had a better welcome that a tea tray and yummy cake all set out for us after a long journey, with milk in the fridge too! We were able to walk down to the seafront and also into town. Everything is within easy reach. There is so much to see and do within easy driving distance and being on the edge of Exmoor is a true bonus. We will most certainly be back and a big thank you to Lucy and her team for making our holiday faultless

Lucy and her team were very welcoming and helpful throughout. Brilliant location and such a pretty cottage. We were a party of seven, including three young children, and it was so spacious and spotlessly clean. The hot tub in the pretty and very sunny garden was a real bonus and a very relaxing place to spend some time. Minehead is a lovely place to visit and perfect for visiting Dunster castle. The Cod shop is excellent for a takeaway and the Treat Suite did the most amazing brownies and coffee. A very memorable holiday.

“This is a lovely cottage and we have been very comfortable. We can recommend Dunster Castle, Lynton and Lynmouth, the Tarr Steps and Arlington Court. For places to eat, the Top and Bottom Ship Pubs in Porlock, Fausto’s Italian in Minehead and for takeaway fish and chips, Seafare in Alcombe. Special thanks to Gail and Dave for looking after the hot tub!”
