Shabby Chic past its sell-by date
Fantastic location in Ashdown Forest - perfect for walking and hiking and within easy access of multiple destination points; Hever Castle, Sheffield Park, Wakehurst Place and even a day trip to Hastings and Battle (1066 and all that).
Lovely local villages with excellent pubs and delicious food and any supplies were available in nearby Forest Row.
HOWEVER
Despite being able to see how lovely this little cottage would have been when first done, it was disappointing when we visited, There was an over-riding odour of damp and mould (this was found in the bathroom on the walls behind and around the toilet). The whole smelled musty and whilst the curtains and bedding were fresh, the sofa and fabric covered chest (acting as a coffee table) were worn and quite frankly, a bit grubby. The kitchen area was adequate but the small things caused concern - the worn toaster with an electrical check dated 2017, the sink tidy with an old sponge in it and brown residue at the bottom. But I had bacterial wipes and cleaned as much as I could, opened all the windows to get rid of the smell (temporarily as we had to do this every time we returned to the cottage) and looked for the wine glasses - there were only two - one large and one small - and an ‘eclectic’ collection of crockery. Small things but annoying when you’re paying nearly £1,000 for the week and our previous week’s accommodation in neighbouring Kent had, for the same price, been so clean and luxurious by comparison. It didn’t help that the bed was so uncomfortable - the mattress is much smaller than the lovely ‘sleigh-bed’ it sits in and unless you like a very hard bed, this really needs a new mattress. Finally, the information says that this property is dog-friendly. We had booked our Labrador but in the end, left her with our son and are very glad we did. The property is too small for pets and the available garden area is on a slope, very small and is not enclosed. To be fair, the owner did come down, seemed genuinely unaware of the mould problem and promised to address it - but not much help to us. I don’t think I’ve ever written a bad review before but sadly, this little property needs some urgent investment.
