Every year several hundred thousands of tourists visit Óbidos and its famous medieval Castle, classified as an UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Inside the Castle walls there's a lovely village, with its traditional white houses and plenty of protected old medieval architecture.
Obidos offers a wide choice of friendly bars, cafes, restaurants and gift shops. Obidos is famous for its 'ginjinha' [brandy flavoured with morellos]. Local handicrafts include hand-painted chinaware, aquarelle and oil paintings, painted calabashes, coloured ceramics and wickerwork-like ceramics.
In Óbidos there are numerous cultural events throughout the year: the International Chocolate Festival (usually in March), the Holy Week celebrations (March / April), the Medieval market July / August and the Christmas Village (from early December till 1st January).
The village of Obidos is within easy reach of numerous golden sandy beaches, including; Foz do Arelho [8km], Obidos Lagoon [8km] Praia d'el Rey [10km], Sao Martinho [15km],Peniche [20km] and Nazaré [25Km), etc..
Nazaré and Peniche are well-known around the world for their excellent waves for surfing. There are also good conditions in the nearby for practicing a great variety of other watersports: scuba diving, rowing and windsailing (at Obidos Lagoon, for example).
This region is also very well known for their golf courses, spread everywhere: at Praia d'el Rey, rated as one of the best in Europe, and just 10km away, in Peniche [20km] , and also Golden Eagle, Rio Maior, a 20 min drive.
