LOCAL BEACHES
Approximately five minutes drive away, lies mile upon mile of uncrowded golden sandy beaches sheltered by spectacular rocky pine-studded headlands. These beaches are washed clean every day by the Atlantic tides which continue to give the Algarve it reputation for being one of the best family holiday areas in the world. Even the smaller quieter beaches usually have a bar serving drinks and snacks all day.
Praia Boco da Lagoa (1)
A lagoon around which a variety of birds are seen backs this beach. It may, at some future date be turned into a marina but, for us, it has its own character. The car can be parked a few yards from the beach and is in the middle of a three-kilometre stretch of deserted beaches. There is a good clean restaurant where you will not be charges UK beach prices,
Praia de Gale (2)
This beach has changed in the last few years, with the development of a large number of villa close by it is much busier than we have previously known it. It rests at the eastern end of 3km of a long sandy beach with Armacao de Pera at its western end. By walking a couple of hundred yards towards Armacao you will find all the space you need. On the eastern side there are a number of sandy coves between the rock formations. There are two good beach restaurants and, in season, boats and pedalos can be hired. There is a large parking area adjacent to the beach but at weekends, or mid summer, you may have to park 200/300 yards away.
Praia de Castello (3)
This is a splendid secluded cove about 100 yards along and it's changed little. The only differences are that the restaurant, which is built into the cliff, has been very much upgraded and there is a concessionary area where you can hire sun chairs and parasols. The cove is edged by rock formations and, to the westward side; you can walk, for some way along the low cliffs. The cove is sheltered from most winds and there is a car park above the bay with a short slope down 25/30 steps to the sand.
Praia de Sao Rafael (4)
Here there are three choices of beaches. The two smaller coves, with a great deal of character, are close together and served by the usual beach restaurant/bar, right on the beach. These beaches are linked at a low tide. The main beach at Sao Rafael is to the west of these coves and is reached through the holiday villa, which has recently been built. Do not let this put you off because the beach is about three hundreds yards long, is wide and, in our opinion, in a superb location. It is also served by a restaurant/bar. All the beaches at Sao Rafael have parking on the low cliff tops adjacent to the beach.
Armacao De Pera (5)
This resort is for those looking for activity along the promenade, which backs the long sandy beach. There are plenty of typical holiday kiosks, shops etc, together with a variety of restaurants. The beach really is absolutely superb.
