Johan was an extremely helpful host who made all transactions very easy. The house was gorgeous and extremely well located in Ypres. Day trips to Bruges, hiring bikes and the beach were a highlight. The number of bathrooms and bedrooms made the house really good for sharing with another family.

Abacus house is fantastic - beautifully renovated with everything you need in the heart of Ypres. All the beds were extremely comfortable. Johan and Christine are excellent hosts and provided all the information you could need. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Abacus House surpassed our expectations. It is perfectly situated - very close to the centre of Ieper yet in a quiet and pleasant neighbourhood. It is well-equipped, very clean, with very comfortable beds, good linens and towels and three bathrooms (one on each floor). The views from the upper floor are great. All four bedrooms are lovely, with decent blackout blinds. There is a separate living/music room as well as the open plan living/dining room, and a good kitchen with all you need for self-catering. The garden catches the sun all day. Christine and Johan were easy to contact and very helpful. We used the house as a base to visit the Salient and the Somme by car and it was also easy to get to Poperinge quickly by train and (longer trip) Bruges. Car parking was no problem at all. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Abacus House and would certainly come back.

Lovely house only 2 streets away from the market square and lots of restaurants and the wonderful cloth hall and it's great museum. Worth a visit!! The house was clean and comfy, we didn't need to contact the owners as everything was there we needed! The only thing to consider is if anyone in your party has trouble with stairs as there are a lot of them it being a town house and 3 stories. there is even outside space to sit and relax in but we didn't use this as the pond was needing attention!! (the only complaint we could think of about the house) The parking in the centre of Ypres is a bit of a problem as you can only park for 3 hours maximum during the day using a parking disc(available from the visitor information centre for a small charge but also supplied by Johan and Christine in the house) or paying for a ticket. There is free parking further from the centre. Would recommend a stay in Abacus house despite the parking and the pond, enjoyed our stay immensely, thank you.

It would be difficult to find anything about Abacus House to criticize. The hosts, Johan and Christine made sure that our arrival was easy and the house was immaculate.

A beautiful house in an excellent location. The house is deceptive, the stone exterior hides a beautiful interior, and if you go to the top floor the views are stunning. This is our second stay at Abacus house and Christine and Johan couldn't have made it any better, from the wine in the fridge to the Christmas decorations in the lounge, the house has everything you need to make your stay exactly what you need. The home will comfortably take 7 - 8 visitors without feeling cramped. There is Wifi access in the house and a TV with some English speaking channels. Parking can be a game of hide and seek, but Christine and Johan provide information about how to park on the street, however if you have a disabled badge you can park for free all day on the street and surrounding streets The location is central, a 2 minute walk from the Menin Gate and Central Square and shopping, or a short drive to many of the battlefield memorials or other main locations of Brugge, Gent and Lille, Ieper is an excellent place to base your stay.

Abacus House is the ideal location a few minutes walk from the Menin Gate and all the facilities that the wonderful town of Ypres offers. The house is everything that we could have wished for, spacious, clean, fully equiped and with lots of character. Johan was very helpful in explaining all that we needed to know when we arrived. We had a wonderful time visiting around the area and would certainly use the house again.

What a find!! Abacus House is right in the heart of Ypres & just a 5 minutes walk from the Menin Gate (daily last post ceremony at 20.00 hrs every day) and the town centre. An ideal location for visiting the rich history of Belgium and the CWGC in the area. The house is self catering, huge and spacious with everything you need to make your stay 100% comfortable and luxurious. Six of us stayed in this amazing house and there was more than enough adequate room for us. We all agreed that we would definitely stay here again when we return in the very near future. Thanks to Johan, the owner who was very helpful and had great information about what the area had to offer. If I could give this accommodation a million stars I would!!

About the neighborhood
Next to it's medieval past, Ypres is above all remebered for it's role in the Great War 1914-1918. An impressive In Flanders Fields Museum immerses visitors into the life of common people during that war. The city, entirely rebuilt to pre-war drawings doesn't stop to marvel: Cloth Hall and Belfry Tower, Saint Martin's Cathedral, Saint George's Memorial Church, Vauban Ramparts and many others all long for your visit. Nearby artifical lakes, parts of Louis XIV's Ypres defence by Vauban, offer refreshing retreats for hikers and bikers. Innumerous Commonwealth Wargraves and War Memorials pintpoint your journey through Ypres' surroundings. The nearby amusement parks of Bellewaerde (Geluveld) and Plopsaland (Adinkerke-De Panne) await families with younger children for a day full of treats.
