The Casale Sonnino, located 40 minutes from the city center, sits on a hilltop that once belonged to the Roman Senator Caius Julius Cornutus Tertullus in 100 AD. Traces of his ancient residence such as fragments of columns and walls have emerged from the soil and now enhance the ambiance of the garden. The cistern of the ancient villa lies in the Casale's basement which also features a Roman well, Roman arches and a system of caves dating back to at least the 12th Century. Over the years, these caves have been used for storing wine, growing mushrooms and even for a scene in an Italian feature film. Make sure you ask for a tour when you visit the Casale!

The design of the Villa itself is long and narrow with two staircases rather than a central one - this is typical of late 17th and 18th Century Roman country houses. The building was...

We arrived in late October to perfect weather with friends to celebrate our special birthdays. The villa is elegant but very unpretentious. The grapes and olives had already been harvested but we were still able to get a taste of what is involved in running a family farm. The villa's proximity to Rome made it easy for us to do...

We spent 2 weeks at Casale Sonnino over Christmas and New Year. George was very accommodating for our large family. We had a wonderful breakfast every morning and enjoyed some lovely days lounging around the house. We were visiting family and hosted a Christmas eve potluck and a catered New Years Eve party. George and crew made the room beautiful,...

We adored our stay at the Casale, from the comfort of the beautifully restored villa surrounded by olive groves and vineyards to its ideal location on the outskirts of Rome. The house is a gem, modern comfort with old world charm, and is ideally located between Rome and Frascati. The rooms are adorned with family history and we were able...

About the neighborhood
The Casale Sonnino is conveniently located off of the Rome-Naples Highway A-1 which runs Southeast of the city. It takes 30 minutes to get into Rome-Termini station (Central Rome) by the train at Colle Mattia, a station stop less than 2 kilometers from our Villa. There is parking for your rental car at Colle Mattia as well as ample parking at the Casale for you and your family/friends. The Casale is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and is privately located at the end of a long cobblestone driveway and wrought iron gate. The "FS" at the top of the gate stands for our great, great uncles/grandfather, the "Fratelli Sonnino" who owned the vineyard 100 years ago. Our small town, Monte Porzio Catone is a 1K walk (up a hill, sorry!) from our gate. There you can find... more
