The name of the square derives from the famous circular monument that characterizes it, the Pantheon, the best preserved among all the monuments of ancient Rome and also the most curious about its birth. According to Cesare D'Onofrio, one of the greatest living specialists in Roman History, the Pantheon was built on the site where, Romulus 'ascended' to heaven during a ceremony in Campo Marzio, interrupted by a sudden, violent thunderstorm. For centuries in that place, on the day of the disappearance of Romulus, rites and processions took place that reminded that supernatural event. Wonderful and intriguing is also The Fountain of Piazza della Rotonda, which rises with its obelisk right in front of the Pantheon, and is probably the most curious and heterogeneous fountain in Rome, because noone can be attributed as the author of this fountain. The monuments and places of interest in this neighbourhood are several: Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina, Santa Maria in Aquiro, St. Mary Magdalen, St. Joseph at Capo le Case. Palazzo Chigi (since 1961, is the seat of the Italian government and residence of the President of the Council of Ministers), Palazzo Montecitorio (seat of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic), the Gallery Alberto Sordi (formerly Galleria Colonna) opened in 1922 and refurbished in 2003 taking the name of this famous actor. A few steps from the square there are some of the most elegant streets of Rome, home to the Maison of the biggest fashion venues. Also nearby you can find Via del Corso, the main shopping street, with its luxury brand shops as well as also stores of the most famous low-cost chains. Do not miss a visit to one of the most renowned cafes in Rome, the 'Casa del Caffè Tazza D'Oro', where you will find a renowned iced coffee covered with layers of whipped cream and the best coffee and cappuccinos in Rome as well as the historic cafeteria famous for its blends prepared with the water of an ancient aqueduct, Sant'Eustachio il Caffè. Just a few steps away is the Gelateria Giolitti, where you can find the best pastries and ice cream in Rome, in an elegant 1900s room of Liberty furnishings.
