Carcassonne, Aude, Occitanie
The Olivier is a recently renovated gite built into the heart of an 18th century watermill and set amid two acres of grounds.
It is located in the historic quarter of Villegailhenc, a small village in Cabardes wine country, between medieval Carcassonne and the beautiful Black Mountains.
Yet despite being surrounded by so much green space, L'Olivier is just five minutes walk from the village centre and all local amenities.
Our 11x5m secluded and heated pool is shared by guests of our three gites, our family and friends. It is surrounded by 100sqm of poolside terrace and wooden decking. The pool is south facing, attracts sun from dawn to dusk, regularly reaching 26-28°C between May and September. We also have a paddling pool for the very young.
L'Olivier has its own terrace area - perfect for BBQing, sunbathing or just general rela...

Interaction with guests
We live in the main house above our three gites and are around much of the time so we are on hand to help guests with queries, information and problem solving. When guests arrive they usually ring our door bell, we show them in, answer queries and hand over the keys. We are usually on hand to take the keys back off guests at the end of the stay and wish our guests 'bon voyage'.

Beautiful gite and spacious grounds with plenty for the children to explore. Our twins loved the pool and trampoline. The stone gite was kept lovely and cool, perfect after a day in the sun - it was 38 degrees on some of the days we visited in June! Helen and Mick were wonderful and on hand for anything we needed...

We have just had a smashing week at Le Moulin, nr. Carcassonne. Loads to do, Carcassonne is superb, so interesting, and plenty to see around-about. Helen and Mick are perfect hosts, lots of advice about where to go on visits. Narbonne is an easy drive to the coast with the plage a little further on. At Le Moulin there is...

About the neighborhood
From white-water rafting on the river Aude to horse-riding, mountain-biking and wine-tasting tours virtually from the doorstep, there is always plenty to do in the local area.
Every August our village - Villegailhenc - hosts a weekend-long party which includes a fair, music, dancing eating and drinking. And September brings the local flea market, perfect for bargain hunters.
Also, no visit to Olivierwould be complete without an excursion to the historic city of Carcassonne, five miles to the south.
In addition to its summer-long music and arts festival and spectacular Bastille Day firework display, Carcasonne features two UNESCO world heritage sites - the historic medieval Cite and the beautiful tree-lined Canal du Midi.

Getting around
We recommend having a car but it is not essential and we have had many guests over the years who come 'car-free'. There is a year-round bus service into Carcassonne which costs 1 euro a journey and operates several times a day. We have bikes which we lend to guests which are great for exploring the local area. There are several walks direct from the gite through vineyards and countryside to local wine domaines and our local bar/restaurant. There are taxis plus we operate an unofficial taxi service when available for 15 euros anywhere in the Carcassonne area. Carcassonne railway station has direct connections to Toulouse, Narbonne, Barcelona and Quillan in the foothills of the Pyrennees. Journeys to Quillan cost 1 euro.

How to get there
Airport: Carcasonne: 3.1 mi
Railway: Carcassonne: 3.1 mi
From the airport:
Take the D119 heading into Carcassonne. At the first roundabout take the third exit marked 'Mazamet'. You will now be on the main ring road around Carcassonne, the D6161.
Keep following signs to Mazamet and you will eventually end up on the D118 which goes through Villegailhenc.
When you enter the village look for the Octavio hotel and restaurant on the left. Immediately after it there is a left hand turn. Take this and take a left when you get to the T-junction at the end. Continue over the bridge and immediately after it you turn right then immediately right again. Continue up this access road 50m and you will come to two brown gates possibly also saying 'Le Moulin'. You have arrived.
