First of all, the apartment is wonderfully located and beautifully and tastefully laid out and decorated, however my visit was singularly the worst experience I've had in 20 years of independent travel.
I communicated frequently with the owner including via e-mail on the morning of the Friday that I was due to arrive, for a 2 day rental. When I arrived, I followed all of the instructions to the letter, but no one was in the apartment to meet me or to answer the phone, which went to message. It turned out that the owner's mother, who lives in another apartment in the block had been enlisted to meet me, but given I hadn't been given any contact details for her or told she was meeting me, I was unable to contact her and she made no attempt to meet me.
So I had arrived in a new city and was unable to get any access to the apartment that I had booked. I emailed the owner, but it took 3 hours for her to respond, by which time I had to find another place stay, by wandering around the streets and taking to hotels and other apartments in the area. Its a good job that I speak enough French to get by!
All was sorted out by the Saturday by e-mail. The owner apologised and refunded me 450 Euros on a 770 Euro rental, which sounds OK, except that I'd spend Friday evening in considerable stress, as you can imagine, and the 450 Euros barely covered the cost of the other apartment that I managed to find on the day.
Having finally got into the apartment on Saturday morning, we spent most of Saturday out and returning on Saturday evening found that the apartment had virtually no toilet roll, which was impossible to resolve late at night.
All in all, the experience was horrendous, the owner sent some money as compensation, which barely covered the costs of renting the other apartment on Friday night, let alone the inconvenience and stress suffered and couldn't be bothered to ensure something simple like toilet roll was provided for the apartment. The test of good service isn't when things go wonderfully well, its when something goes wrong. I'm afraid this owner failed.
Despite this being an excellent apartment, I cannot recommend it. The owner showed little regard for making sure that we could get into the apartment as arranged and then made a shoddy attempt at compensation. In her position I would have refunded the entire rental. Goodwill in this sort of situation is far more important that keeping a few Euros back.
