Sue, the lady who manages the apartment has lived in Sheffield all her life and will be able to help you with any questions you may have. Having had a famous heritage in the production of high quality steels and cutlery Sheffield has reinvented itself as a modern and vibrant city with an economy based around the University, light industry, and tourism.
The Millhouse's apartment is located in the South West of the city between Broomhill and the famous Botanical Gardens. A walk around the area will allow the visitor to admire the impressive residences which were once home to the steel and cutlery barons who made this part of the city their home. The Botanical Gardens are literally 5 minutes walk. Over the past 10 years they have been extensively restored to their original glory and are now impeccably maintained by an enthusiastic team of volunteers and professionals. The Glasshouse contains specimens from all the principal global regions. Staying local the flat is located adjacent to the lovely Endcliffe Park and from here one can walk through a string of interlinked parks out into the Derbyshire countryside. (30 mins) Dining out presents no problem as one only has to walk down to Hunters Bar (5 mins) and you have a selection of excellent bars, cafes, and restaurants. Public transport to the centre of Sheffield is very good with a bus route on the adjacent road and several more routes within 5 minutes walk.
Sheffield has attractions to suit all tastes and to highlight just a few:-
The Magna Science Adventure Centre - Sheffield is remains proud of its industrial heritage and the Magna Centre seeks to recreate some of the atmosphere of a working steel factory - with a simulated electric arc steel furnace. Children will love Magna - not just because of this spectacle but for a host of other science adventure experiences.
Abbeydale Industrial Village - provides an insight into the earlier days of the cutlery industry where the motive power was provided by water.
Weston Park National History Museum - a short bus ride from the flat this museum will be a particular interest to children.
Galleries - The wealthy steel and cutlery business owners were generous in their gifts of art to the City. These can be seen in the Mappin and Graves galleries.
Winter Gardens - This is one of UK's largest temperate glasshouses - a modern creation in the centre of the city
which also incorporates a museum / gallery and cafe within its area.
Sheffield Ski Village - Europe's largest artificial ski park with facilities for skiing, snowboarding, and other activities such a bowling.
Shopping - Meadowhall remains Europe's top shopping mall and is linked by a modern tram service from the city centre.
