Platform 1 is the result of a total refurbishment completed in 2009 to create a contemporary living space of a very high quality and comfort. The self-catering accommodation can easily provide for up to four persons comprising of one double bedroom with en-suite; a separate shower room with WC; a large 'dream' kitchen and a very spacious lounge with a comfortable sofa bed for two. The self-catering accommodation can easily provide for up to four persons comprising of one double bedroom with en-suite; a separate shower room with WC; a large 'dream' kitchen and a very spacious lounge with a comfortable sofa bed for two. Because the area is a delight to visit all year round, a lot of attention has been paid to make sure you’ll be comfortable whenever you come to stay. Platform 1 is naturally cool in the summer, and is warm and cosy in the winter with underfloor heating and a traditional log burning stove with wood provided. Regardless of the season or the weather outside, you can be sure that inside it’ll be just right. Space is something you'll find in abundance – this was after all one of the most imposing stations on the line in its day, as befitted the Earl of Carlisle and his important guests who used it. The sitting room, for example, was the former waiting room, and the large arched windows flanked by the original shutters allow the morning sunlight to cascade into this delightful room. Two comfortable sofas and a large dining table with chairs are arranged within the roomy interior. It's a very pleasing environment in which to relax, absorb yourself with your favourite book or watch Sky digital free-view channels on the large Sony Brava flat-screen TV. And if you should need to stay connected to the internet, wi-fi is available at no extra charge. Cross the hall to the kitchen, the style of which could easily grace the pages of a fashionable lifestyle magazine. You may not be planning to spend too much time cooking, but here you'll find everything you need. There is a large electric cooking range, microwave, fridge freezer, dish washer, uncluttered cool granite worktops, and fully-equipped with cutlery, crockery, glassware and utensils, really everything you’ll need. The light, cool, colour scheme provides a pleasant place to be, from when you’re making the first cup of tea of the day, right up to cracking open that eagerly anticipated bottle of wine in the evening. As you pass through the corridor to your bedroom, take a moment to glance out of the window into the inner courtyard – a little haven where well-stocked feeders tempt a wide variety of wild birds and even the local woodpecker population. Beyond the separate modern shower room and WC, you enter the comfortable bedroom. This simple but highly-functional room has been designed with custom built wardrobe and side tables providing plenty of storage to take care of everything during your stay. Comfort is assured with a superior grade, anti-allergenic mattress and fine quality bedding for a pleasant night's sleep – even for those who suffer from allergies. The deep recessed 'arrow slit' windows are an unusual feature of the original station buildings. The bedroom has plenty of natural light provided by the courtyard windows and a Velux skylight with a blackout shield remotely controlled with a solar powered device. Conveniently situated off the bedroom is the en-suite facility comprising of WC and wash basin. In addition to your internal accommodation, there is a patio area and outdoor furniture for your exclusive use in fine weather; plenty of car parking and secure undercover accommodation for bikes. During your stay, don't miss the private wildlife garden set on an acre of land alongside the railway line. This delightful area, which includes a huge pond, has become a thriving habitat for frogs, butterflies and many species of wild birds.

Lovely pet friendly apartment in delightful and unusual setting
Humans and dogs are made to feel equally welcome at this lovely apartment in the unusual setting of Platform 1 Castle Howard. The accommodation was very comfortable and the owners welcoming and helpful. Plenty of good walking places and easy access to places of interest. We'll definitely go back again!

First Class all round
We arrived on a dismal December afternoon for a short break and were welcomed by Anne who had thoughtfully pre-set the heating. Underfloor heating, wonderful. The welcome basket included all local produce and the chocolate 'goodies' were perfect with a cup of tea in front of the log burner. Next day we headed to Malton 'Yorkshire's Food Capital' and then on to Castle Howard to walk around the grounds. Walking directly from the property, the Centenary Way going south took us on a leisurely walk to Kirkham Abbey and heading north through the woods to the village of Crambeck. We had a wonderful couple of days. Platform 1 is in a wonderful location, easy enough to drive further afield, yet perfect for just relaxing. The accommodation is very well-equipped, spotlesslessly clean and very comfortable. I wholeheartedly recommend Platform 1 for a short (or long) break and look forward to returning.

Fabulous BH weekend at Platform 1 Castle Howard Station
What an absolute find this Cottage was. Great location for this fabulous period property. So much History. Host Edmund & Ann (and dog Luna) are very welcoming & extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Property was lovely and clean, very well presented and great original features. walks from the doorstep and the Crown pub is a lovely 30 minute walk away. We really loved walking round the wild garden & pond and picking fruit of the trees. And we even got sunshine!! Thank you.

Platform One - what a location!
What a wonderful stay we had with Edmund and Ann at Platform One. It was idyllic, very well equipped and you couldn't ask for a better welcome from the hosts. The welcome basket was full of lovely food and if you are a twitcher watching the wildlife outside the windows is a joy. If you have dogs there are some lovely local walks and they will love Luna the very friendly inhabitant of Platform One. Booking is highly recommended as you won't be disappointed.

Excellent all round
I’ll start by saying that whilst it’s very dog friendly it was spotless on arrival without a hint that a dog had ever been present. The accommodation is very comfortable with all the amenities you could want. The beautiful outside space drinking tea and watching the wildlife is so relaxing, a true sun tap or windbreak depending what the weather requires. Ann and Edmund, the hosts, great you like friends and are so nice but never intrusive. They are there if wanted for anything and really can’t do enough but at the same time are quiet and invisible if you want peace. With a fully secure garden and excellent local walks this is the perfect place for dogs too. There are dog bowls and beds available and even a few treats. As for location, it is such a peaceful place at the end of its own road where you can relax and watch the wildlife with a couple of trains an hour passing your window. But it’s so close to so many places to visit if you do want to get the car out with York half an hour away and the coast hardly further. And if you don’t want to drive there’s a regular bus that runs between Leeds and Whitby/Scarborough that stops at the top of the road. I truly can’t find a negative, I’ll definitely be booking again and can’t praise it enough

Stay and watch the trains
Excellent hosts Anne and Edmund and there was a welcome basket on arrival. Spacious lounge and kitchen, shower and wc and a further wc. Enclosed porch with table and chairs. Large bedroom. Outside, a further table and chairs. Plenty of space for parking and charging point for electric cars. The York to Scarborough like passes platform 1, so you can sit outside and watch the trains and plenty of birds, bluetits, woodpeckers for example. There are a number of walks nearby to explore with or without a dog. Very clean and recommended. Castle Howard is around 15 minutes drive away.

Perfect, restful break in a beautiful setting
Platform 1 is in a beautiful location, ideal for exploring the area and with some lovely walks right on the doorstep and a short drive to Castle Howard. The accommodation itself is clean, comfortable, fantastically equipped with everything you could need. We particularly loved the ambience in the sitting room which was the old station waiting room. Dog friendly with access to the wonderful garden and there’s even a resident dog who will happily tire out your dogs for free with circuits of the garden! Highly recommended.

'Magical'
What a Wonderful Magical place Platform 1 is to stay, the location is so quiet and peaceful even with the passing of a couple of local trains every hour, they pass so quickly you don't really notice them. Anne & Edmond are lovely welcoming owners with vast knowledge of the local area and the history of Platform 1. The Welcome Hamper is a lovely gesture containing locally sourced products, accommodation is very well presented and exceptionally clean, it is pretty much home from home surrounded by well maintained gardens which are totally secure and well fenced. The location is just off the A64, you could be in the heart of York within 20 mins or on the East coast in 45mins, Castle Howard is approx 3 miles away and is well worth a visit, call in at the local Deli 'The Dogh' in the village of Welburn for a coffee and home made sandwiches/cakes, pretty impressive !.......On the whole from the minute you arrive to the minute you leave you will feel welcomed, relaxed and your every need catered for during your stay with Anne and Edmond even though they stay invisible most of the time they are always at hand if needed. Thank you both for a 'Magical' few days at your 'Wonderful' property ! Angela & Damion

Perfect
We had a perfect break, the location, accommodation and hosts were wonderful, stylish but cosy, warm and homely, the peace and quiet of the garden, watching the birds feeding just terrific, only broken by the occasional train, from the station there are some great walks without getting in the car, we have dogs so this is a perfect place, dog friendly and relaxed, we stayed Monday to Friday but if we could have we would have stayed on, didn't want to leave, also lots around if you do get the car out, coast not much more than 30mins, we loved it and will return, Thanks to Anne and Edmund & Luna of course.

Beautiful cottage, great location!
Platform 1 is at the end of a quiet lane off the A64. The property is completely fenced, making it extremely safe for dogs. The cottage is part of the original station for Castle Howard and retains all its original character. Inside it is warm, welcoming and very well equiped, and your lovely hosts Ann and Edmund, will have left you some delicious local goodies to start off your holiday (Ann and Edmund live next door and are on hand for help if needed, but are never intrusive, just very nice people). There are also doggy bowls, towels and throws should you need them. There are lovely walks directly from the cottage, you also have access to Ann and Edmund's garden. The local area has plenty to offer, walks, gardens, historic buildings, engaging market towns (Helmsley and Malton especially), railways (ancient and modern) and the coast. A little gem in North Yorkshire, we'll visit again.
