House Rental
No. 2 Precentor's Court is an exceptional 4 bedroom townhouse, with a courtyard garden; it can accommodate up to 6 guests. The rental comprises of the entire house, thereby offering privacy and space, and is arguably the best located holiday property in York. It suitable for families and mixed groups of friends. It has been awarded the highest rating of 'Five Star Gold' by Visit England for 6 years.
A comprehensive refurbishment of the entire house was completed, and care was taken to retain the original features, many of which date back nearly 300 years. Absolutely flawless, in city centre
This house, a stones throw from York Minster, was outstanding. We often do vacation rentals, and this was by far the best we’ve ever had.
Every detail was perfect, from the cleanliness to the decor to all the little details niceties Coralann organic milk and champagne in the fridge, cookies and a small cake on the kitchen table, shampoo and conditioner in the bathrooms, blankets and games in the sitting room covered, and so on.
The one issue that might be a problem for some people is the wonky stairs. And I have balance and mobility problems, and it was okay for me, but it might not be for some people with more severe issues. There is no ground floor bedroom or toilet.
That said, everything else was just delightful, and all three families intends to come back to the property in the future. If you want to go to York, and you are five or more people, this is the house for you.

Lovely property
My family, including 2 children, stayed for 3 nights just before Christmas. The property was spotlessly clean and well equipped and the owners very responsive to the minor questions we had. The entire family was impressed with this historic property with its prime location. York was lovely dressed for the holidays and the Christmas market a real treat. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

Wonderful location, very well equipped
We could see the front of the Minster from the front door and thus very easy to pop across for Evensong or for the children to have a little run on the grass of Dean's Park. We had travelled to York by train and I had an Ocado food ordered delivered soon after our arrival and later used the Sainsbury's Local to top ups (thank you, Jane, for very clear directions).
The Betty's cake and biscuits on arrival were very welcoming ..and on another evening we drank the prosecco in the little courtyard garden and toasted the Boxing Hare. The house was spotlessly clean and the beds very comfortable indeed. We made sure the children were careful on the stairs and everything was fine. I liked the hare and rabbit touches and the decor was just the right balance..retaining the old combined with practical modern
Just a couple of suggestions..I would have liked a small sharp veg knife
and it would have been nice to have had an additional light in the sitting room fro reading. Having stayed several times in Landmark Trust Properties..it made me think that it would have been interesting to have some note on the history of the house. e.g. the Court on old maps, engravings etc. What's a precentor? Who lived there before the church sold the property? Were they single? Did they have a house keeper?
A perfect place for a York holiday! Thank you

Dear Felicity, thank you for your lovely review. I have intended to research the history of the house for a long time - but unfortunately it is still on my 'to do' list! I will try harder! Thank you for the other suggestions - much appreciated. Best wishes, Jane

Magnificent
I'm going to give this review in two parts: location and the house itself.
The location is breathtaking. Central to the city, it is literally 15 yards from The Minster itself. It is history actually on your doorstep. The main parts of the city, including the river, are all within a 10-15 minute walk of the house - so access to restaurants, river trips, shops, historical sites are so easy.
The house itself is a mixture of historical and modern. The main door security keypad, kitchen, bathrooms and beds form the modern - the rest of the house is typical 18th Century architecture. Apparently a three story building, you then find a cellar level. All rooms are a good size and many of the rooms have doors that, when opened, reveal storage of some description. Some of these are used as dressing rooms/walk in wardrobes, another in the hall contains tourist information and one is used as a butler's pantry. The house is quirky and entertaining - few of the floors are level; so when you get out of bed to head to the door, you often detour to the wardrobe! We loved it!
We were a party of eight women whose ages range from late 60s to late 20s and our favourite place in the house was the large kitchen table where we drank tea, gossiped, laughed and played board games - oh and occasionally ate!
Thank you for having us - if we ever return to York, I'll make sure to book well in advance.

Minster Magic
Expertly renovated town house with enough mod cons to make the stay comfortable without detracting from the history and quirkiness of the historic property. Literally a stone's throw away from York Minster and the Shambles so no need to use your car to get around (so leave it in the single, secure car parking space provided a short stroll away). Top floor single bedroom/beds not really suited for adult use and some might whinge about the tiny tv but please don't let this detract from a wonderful property which is clearly well-managed and ideally located.

Made a fantastic Birthday Celebration
Stayed with my family at this house celebrating 2 Birthdays, but an important age one for a Daughter. FABULOUS house, few steps from the historic Minster, immaculate and full of everything a family needs, including books/games and even amusements for our 4 year old Grandson. Thoughtfully found cake/shortbread and a bottle left as a welcoming gift. Can only confirm my family had the best 4 days in York, and really do recommend this house to everyone who wishes to stay in York and want something that lets them choose their own agenda but is definitely unique. The Wi-fi was excellent at all times as well, an added bonus.
Minster bells stopped ringing at 8pm, but Tuesday must have been practice day as it continued for longer, and a good alarm clock for 8am next morning.

Luxury & elegance in the heart of York - I want to catch the bus back now
A beautiful historic house, just a stone's throw from York Minster. The perfect spot for exploring one of England's finest cities. Rooms are big, clean and immaculately furnished, complete with all mod cons. Everything you could possibly need is provided - from free wifi to a free parking space just a short walk away. There was even cake & biscuits from Bettys and prosecco as a welcome gift - nice! A great place to stay, would definitely recommend. Driving home, my 3-year-old nephew told his parents: "I want to catch the bus back now"!

Living in York
We felt like we were part of the York community. We were near everywhere we wanted to visit in York. The house is very quiet even though it is a few steps around the corner to the Minster. We used the house as a base to travel to the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and many National Trust properties. We were on a Richard III history excursion. Visited his tomb in Leicester, the Richard III experience in York, Middleham CAstle and found his pictures in other historic sites. The owners were very quick to answer any questions we had.
I would stay here again.

About the neighborhood
The Property is situated right next to York Minster, Northern Europe's second largest Gothic Cathedral and listed in Lonely Planet's top 10 global "sights to make you feel small'. It is on a small and quiet street most of which dates from the early eighteenth century. Precentor's Court is a dead-end (though there is a small 'Snickleway' that comes out by the Hole in the Wall pub), and therefore is almost traffic free apart from the occasional van or resident's car.
The historic and picturesque City of York crams an awful lot into its medieval walls. It is a very compact city, much of which is pedestrianised, and most places can be easily reached on foot (which is by far the best way to explore a place). When you get tired there are always buses and taxis to fall back on.
It is almost impossible to list all the things to do in and around York, but here is a just taster - walk the city walls, take a trip on the River Ouse, explore the Minster and go to one of its choral Services, take a Ghost Walk, go horse racing at the Knavesmire, browse the excellent shops, dine in one the many cafes/restaurants/bars, picnic in the parks and gardens, visit National Trust properties like the Treasurer's House, visit a museum (e.g. National Railway Museum, Fairfax House and the Castle Museum), go to a play at one of York's two theatres, play golf in one of the area's championship golf courses (Fulford, Strensall and Ganton), or just wander aimlessly and chillax.
Local excursions include - visit a stately home like Castle Howard (famous for its part in Brideshead Revisited), take a trip to the seaside at Whitby (where Captain Cook meets Dracula) and the Yorkshire Coast, buy some antiques in Harrogate or fashion in Leeds, go hiking in the Yorkshire Dales or even the Lake District, thrill your children in the Forbidden Corner, catch a steam train in the North York Moors, feel the history at Fountains Abbey (a World Heritage Site), cycle the Route of the Tour de France (Le Grand Depart 2014). Further afield London, Manchester and Edinburgh are only a couple of hours away by train.
York's classic Victorian train station is a few minutes walk away, it is one of the main hubs of the UK's railway network, giving access all parts of the country. The nearest international airports are Leeds/Bradford, Manchester and Teeside. Ferries to the Continent leave from Hull on the east coast.
There is no parking directly outside the house but it is possible to drive directly to the property to load and unload. There is a reserved bay for one car about 5 minutes walk away which is free and for the exclusive use of our guests (directions will be given in the welcome pack which is sent out about a week before the booking is due). Additional parking is available in one of several of York City Council's car parks which are also within a few minutes walk of the house.
