About the neighborhood
In Charles Dickens times, Shad Thames included the largest warehouse complex in London. The shipping wharves and warehouses of Shad are mostly named after the huge quantities of tea, coffee, spices and other commodities which were loaded and unloaded onto river boats. Today, following Sir Terence Conran's conversion of Butler's Wharf into luxury flats and restaurants, the whole area has been transformed into a lively, vibrant riverside scene. In addition to the many bars and restaurants, the river frontage between St Saviours Wharf and London Bridge is host to pop-up sculptural works, creative displays, festivals and street activity. Tower Bridge at night is iconic - known the world over for its beauty and architecture. Other landmark buildings seen from Shad Thames include: the Gherkin, t...
Getting around
Convenient transport links to all parts of London via the underground and river taxi networks. Bermondsey tube station is an 8 minute walk, with the jubilee line taking you into the heart of London's west end for shopping in a few stops. London Bridge station is a delightful walk along the pedestrianised river side walkway, with northern and jubilee line connections, as well as a river taxi pier. Tower Bridge is 5 minutes away, to take you over the river to the City of London.
