14 Bedrooms, 8 Bathrooms, Sleeps 28
Cockermouth, Lake District, Cumbria, England
Low Millgillhead is the perfect place to get together with family and friends.
You'll find three Georgian houses, all very different from each other, each with their own gardens and own privacy (all face in different directions), and you can book all three together to sleep up to 28 if you would like.

The main house, Low Millgillhead (sleeps 12), has an open fire, generous bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and an acre of gardens.

Croft House is a stunning barn conversion (also sleeps 12) and there is an internal door connecting the barn to Low Millgillhead which is kept open if you take both together.

Rose Cottage is a small home on the end and provides accommodation for a further four people. The gardens are superb and cover three acres. Children particularly enjoy the secret garden hidden among the rhododendrons, accessed via...

Low Millgillhead is an old but well-maintained property with plenty of character in a beautiful rural setting. We were a group of eight adults and found the accommodation more than adequate for our needs, in part because the property can sleep twelve. Specifically, sleeping arrangements comprise three rooms with double bed, and three with twin beds, one of which is on the ground floor, and another is accessible only through one of the double rooms upstairs (the two rooms would suit a family of four as part of a larger group).

There are no local shops so it is important to bring at least an initial supply of food and drink to see you through until you can get to the shops in Cockermouth (about 7 miles). And also, bring your own towels as these are not supplied.

The house is "in the middle of nowhere", but "nowhere" is the beautiful countryside of the Lake District with plenty of local walks (suitable footwear advisable). There are some neighbouring...

About the neighborhood
Scafell is England's highest mountain and a half hour drive takes you to the bottom, ready for the big climb up. The thing about the Lake District is that all the mountains here are manageable in a (sometimes long) day. If you don't fancy big climbs, then there are lovely walks through woods and alongside the lakes.

For a bit of adventure there is plenty to suit every level of experience - rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling, mountain biking, pony trekking and Go Ape at Whinlatter. All these experiences within half an hour of Croft House.

There are some superb stately homes, many of which are still lived in. Muncaster Castle is my favourite but there are plenty of others to choose from.

And if you have kids there is... more
