Overview
Cottage -
2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4
Dartmouth, Devon, England
Spyglass is now refurbished and enlarged and is transformed into a lovely cosy 2 bedroom cottage retaining all it's original charm but with a new twist upstairs........the ground-floor kitchen/dining is now a second bedroom. The lounge upstairs has had the roof raised and is a great all-in-one lounge/ kitchen /dining room from which there are full width, glass windows with truly stunning views overlooking the River Dart, with increased views up river, across to Kingswear, and down the estuary past Dartmouth Castle and out to sea. There is also a small door giving direct access to the roof terrace with more fine river and sea views. A high efficiency wood burning stove is installed upstairs and makes the whole room warm and cosy. There are 4 Velux roof windows giving more views and lots of light upstairs. We ran out for time for full... Read more

The owner's photos don't exaggerate! The view is actually better than shown - down the estuary, to Kingswear opposite and upstream - worth the rent on its own and more than justifying the effort required from the slightly challenging external steps. The accommodation is well and imaginatively furnished, clean, comfortable and perfectly equipped for a stay of a week or...

The cottage has good views but with some obstruction from the roof in front. The living area is very light and there are partial views of the river and trees from all of the windows. The owners have made good use of the limited space available with a generously sized shower and well equipped kitchen. There is a small cloakroom...

Management response:

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Spyglass. Guests have described the views as 'panoramic' 'incredible''amazing'and even 'mesmerising' . All the numerous photographs are taken from Spyglass itself. Some people do find the steps difficult so they are mentioned twice in the property details, and I do not recommend Spyglass to the infirm or those with small children....

A really charming old cottage with a great modern loft conversion with kitchen, sitting area, a fantastic log burner (if you're staying in the winter) and panoramic views over the River Dart. Lovely place to stay - would highly recommend

Hi - thanks so much for your review. It's great that people coming out of season get to use the log burner! I have the same one at home and love it. All the best, Martin

Small children may find Spyglass a problem as there are 32 steps and not easy for a pushchair. Also there is no child gate at the property. The steps may be an issue for older...

Railway: Kingswear: 0.6 mi
Ferry: Plymouth: 40.4 mi
Many people drive to Dartmouth ,and, my favourite arrival is to drive along the road to Brixham (A380) from Exeter then head for the Lower Ferry in Dartmouth - it can mean quite a wait in the summer as queues build up for this uniquely odd Dartmouth ferry - there is also the Upper Ferry which is larger and faster but not as quirky! you can also arrive by steam train from Paignton or tie in with Network rail and come all the way by train, then a short ferry hop across the Dart to Dartmouth.
