Great villa, very pretty and stylish in a rustic fashion. Very quiet and tranquil surroundings, no other houses in immediate vincinity. Maza with its excellent Taverna in walking distance. Beaches at Georgiopouli and lake Kournas with its turtles nearby. Good location for Chania. Highly recommended.

The village of Maza is far enough from crowded and noisy "tourist" areas to feel completely relaxed, nevertheless not too far from places where you can do neccessary shopping (about 7 minutes by car from Vrysses Apokoronou with some shops and tavernas and 15 min from Georgioupoli tourist centre. The place is absolutely quiet (some 50 m from a local road, no other houses nearby), surrounded by lush green (rather unusual in Crete). The villa and swimming pool are situated on a terrace on the hill slope, offering tremendous view. Perfect place for families with children: a swimming pool of decent size with separate shallow area, large lawn, inside everything on one store (except for a small, funny entresol with one bed and an armchair). The house is comfortable, very clean, elegant and arranged with care. Beautiful stone walls, kitchen and two main bedrooms spacious and well-lit (which isn't obvious in houses for rent on the Island). Very comfortable beds and a lot of place for the luggage. The property is very well managed - during our 9 days stay the cleaning staff came twice, changing towels and linens. Gregory, our host, is very caring. He told us (with every useful details) about many interesting places nearby, including some incredible tavernas.

We had a wonderful holiday at the villa petra. Absolutely amazing place surrounded by beautiful mountains just 15min. from the beautiful sandy beach, 5 min. walk to the village where there are two traditional tavern and friendly people. The house is breathtaking ... tastefully decorated, with respect to the tradition and culture ... my five-year-old daughter felt like a real princess traversing the hidden corners of this extraordinary building built of stone and beautiful wooden logs in plenty of stunning Items giving us on a journey through history. Gregory is a delectable man, he take care for us on a high standard. Thank you a lot ;) Highly recommended. marta

Our family (parents and 3 kids) stayed in Villa Petra on September 2013 for one week. We had a great time. The Villa is beautiful - it looks even better than its photos. The Villa is very well equipped, nicely decorated and it is very comfortable. The location was great for us - private, quiet but no far away. The owner was very easy to communicate with and helped us with information ect. We had a wonderful vacation and we hope to come back for another one in the near future.

I visited Villa Petra with my family in April this year. The place is beautiful and private. The fixtures and fittings are luxurious and meet exceptionally high standards. Our stay there was wonderful. The location is perfect base for lots of activities. The beaches are close distance to the villa , the closer one being Georgioupoli which is only 5 minutes away bay car. The owner Gregory was really friendly and helpful. He made us feel very comfortable and he showed us many activities to do in the area The garden is beautiful full of flowers, the pool is clean and great for family fun. Kids loved it. It was a great holiday in a most beautiful house at a great setting. We’re looking forward to visiting again next year!

My husband and I rented Villa Petra in October for two weeks. The Villa is really charming, well-equipped and has superb facilities. The pool, which looks especially beautiful when illuminated at night, is set in a very pretty and secluded garden from which there are stunning views over the olive groves to The White Mountains. The owner, Gregory, is extremely friendly, helpful and concerned for your comfort and if, as in our case, it is your first visit to Crete is happy to recommend places to visit. You can walk to the local tavernas which serve Cretan food at excellent prices and there are beautiful beaches not too far away. There are numerous interesting places to visit, our favourite being Chania Harbour, but the villa and pool are so lovely that we found it difficult to tear ourselves away and therefore did not visit all the places we'd intended to.

We felt very much at home for the 9 days we were at Villa Petra. Booking direct with Gregory, the owner, couldn't have been more straightforward. Location is secluded, quiet and has fantastic views of the surrounding olive groves, hills and mountains. It's ideally placed to explore other areas of Crete and 5 min drive from the pretty small town of Vrysses, which had everything we needed from a bakery, supermarket with butcher, petrol station, cafes and shops. Maza itself is a tiny hamlet with a lovely square at the centre which has a great taverna run by Kostas and Voula - two extremely welcoming hosts who go out of their way to make you feel part of the community and dish up tasty rustic dishes, most of the produce they grow/rear themselves. There is another taverna M Maza, about a 2 min walk from the villa, run by Elena who cooks delicious local produce and even delivered a pre-ordered hot lunch to the villa one day so we didn't have to lift a finger to enjoy the fresh, wonderful meal. Her aubergine 'dip' (it's probably called something specific but I don't know what) was one of the best things I tasted the whole time I was there and the lamb she cooked was tender and packed with flavour. The villa itself is perfectly laid out, everything has been well thought out. It was very clean, and really felt homely and cared for - with lots of old furniture, crockery, plenty of glasses, plates, saucepans, utensils and all the bits and pieces you need when cooking or just relaxing. There were even mosquito plug-ins all round the place, washing powder and dishwasher tabs, candles, a few games, a giant inflatable ring in the pool, plenty of towels and good bedlinen. The well-cared-for potted plants all around the garden were beautiful. It did not feel bare and unloved like some other rented villas you come across. Beds were good: firm but comfortable, bathrooms were lovely and a pleasure to use. Gregory, the owner, was always easy to reach by phone or email if ever we wanted anything and he was extremely friendly and welcoming and happy to go out of his way to meet your needs or advise. We loved the villa so much, we found it quite hard to tear ourselves away and spent far too much time just lazing around in and out of the pool (which was a great size and very clean and had the bonus of not being over-chlorinated), cooking, listening to music, just enjoying the whole feel of the place. We would highly recommend the villa - I would say it's great for a group, a family or for couples wanting to get away from it all. I'd definitely return. I can only think of 1 small thing to improve and that's sorting out the sound on the TV - it was really muddy especially when watching DVDs and it tended to distort if turned up. Apart from that, I think the place is near perfect for a fantastic holiday.

Our family rented Villa Petra in June for a week. The Villa itself is lovely with great facilities. The swimming pool is ideal and secluded in a pretty garden. The view from the villa is stunning; olive groves and snow topped mountains. The nearest beach is a 15 min drive away and the town is small and sweet with a lovely sandy beach that is so shallow it's extremely safe for children. Chania harbour is picturesque and Captain Nick's boat trip is perfect! The most memorable part of our holiday though was the friendly warm reception we got from the taverna owners in Maza, Gregory and the local people in general. It was so good we are planning to return next year for two weeks.

About the neighborhood
In the village Maza near the villa you can find a traditional tavern and a traditional cafeteria where you can taste the real Cretan specialities. For more amenities like mini markets, traditional taverns and cafenions, restaurants, tourist shops, post office, internet cafe or a local doctor you should drive to the village Vrisses. It’s about a 5min to drive. For an even larger variety like all the necessary shops, numerous taverns and cafenions you can find them all along the coast, but a wide choice, such as banks and a post-office can be found, of course, at a short distance, in Chania. The location of the house makes it perfect for many walks all around the villa. Near the villa is a small Byzantine church to visit (Agios Nikolaos). Another choice is the village Georgioupolis .It's...
