Looking for a last minute getaway, we booked into Ambers hoping that it would be adequate for a few days of intensive writing. To our great delight we discovered a wonderful gem that will now become a regular writing retreat. The gite, off to the side of the main house, was fabulous! Beautifully appointed with Provencal details, the gite was large, luxurious, completely self sufficient and so picturesque. The gorgeous, authentically French drapes opened onto a little courtyard with bistro table and a perfectly private country view. If all this wasn't enough to enchant us, we were invited to breakfast in the main house each morning and oh, what a spread! Terri lavished us with delicious fresh and local produce and a wonderful cooked meal. She happily accommodated our dietary requirements and we really enjoyed chatting with her about travel and work and study. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It was a serendipitous find and we will certainly be back to stay very soon.

Travelling to New Zealand for the first time, and with teenagers plus an elderly relative, I was not entirely convinced that The Ambers would suit us as I did not think the decor would appeal to my kids and I was concerned that the place might be too far off the beaten track. I couldn't have been more wrong! Gerard and Diane are considerate, highly competent hosts who made us feel welcome without smothering us, and we thoroughly enjoyed both their company and their lavish breakfasts. The decor is tasteful, with careful attention to detail, but without being stuffy and pretentious. In fact, I had difficulty deciding whether to stay in my beautiful loft room, wallow in the claw bath, sit admiring the view inside and outside the graceful bay window in the lounge or stroll around the beautiful formal gardens. All in all, it offers exceptional value for money, particularly when compared to other venues in the area. Gerard's advice regarding the choice of rooms for our group of guests was...

The Ambers B&B is one km from the main road north (the Northern Motorway), just 30 min north of Auckland. Silverdale is 2 min drive from here, while Orewa which is a seaside town is about 5 min by car. There is lots of parking around the house. Public transportation is difficult, our visitors must have a car, or motorbike.
