For a truly once-in-a-lifetime vacation, consider staying at this incredible farm on the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. Wake up each morning to fresh-laid eggs and delicious goat cheese, handmade right on site, and spend your days exploring the island's lush tropical forests, relaxing in your rustic accommodations, and admiring views of the lake from your perch on the side of Maderas Volcano.
The farm sits outside the community of Balgue on the slopes of the island's southern volcano. Hiking trails lead up to the volcano's summit. The town of Altagracia, which features a charming museum, is less than 10 miles away, and there are numerous places along the coast to rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, perfect for vacationers who want to spend some time on the water.

Beautiful home and amazing landscaped acerage. a slice of paradise!
When you come up the long driveway and the plantain trees open up to this beautiful property, you will be mesmerized at all the flora and fauna. flowers and butterflies everywhere, a few happy goats and a bunch of chickens. (fresh eggs!) The home sits up high with views of the water and lush greenery below. The locals that work on the property are so friendly, helpful and if you choose to include meals, you will be spoiled. You may even get to feed the goat. (can you say fresh goat cheese!)
the lake is very close by, with kayak rentals, horseback ridding, or just going down to the beach. We could have stayed for a month!

About the neighborhood
Finca Ometepe sits outside the community of Balgue on the slopes of the island's southern volcano, Maderas. Hiking trails lead up to the volcano's summit, and there are numerous pre-Columbian petroglyphs contiguous with our property.
The town of Altagracia, which features a charming museum, is less than 10 miles away, and there are numerous places along the coast to rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, fish, or even kite-fly, perfect for vacationers who want to spend some time on the water. We have particularly enjoyed Caballitos del Mar for our kayaking adventures, when the weather is right.
A short trip by car will take you to the other side of the island, where you can ride horses to a waterfall or on the beach.
Getting around
The farm is situated high up on a hill, so it is great to have a car, motorcycle, or quad to get around. There are also many taxis available, and we can help you get shuttles anywhere you want to go. We have bicycles at the farm, and you can easily walk to the small village nearby, Balgue, to get a delicious meal at a local restaurant. Our farm hands can direct you to their favorites :)

How to get there
Hello!
Once you arrive at the airport, it is easy to book a private or group shuttle to San Jorge, where the ferry departs. If you like, we can help you with this, just let us know. You can also book a car, but we recommend choosing a pickup if you want to come to the island, as the roads can be rough in places.
The ride to the ferry is about 1 hour and 40 minutes, depending on traffic. A private taxi should cost about $65. A bus costs a few dollars, but is a much longer ride.
The ferry terminal has lots of pretty places to sit and have a beer or pop, with a fabulous view of Ometepe's two volcanos.
There are two different ferry companies that take you to the island (either is fine), and there are English-speaking guides available at the terminal to help you on the boat. Walking on as a passenger is very easy, but if you are bringing a rental car, you will need to make reservation before you arrive. Be sure to leave plenty of time so you do not miss your ferry!
The ferry ride is about an hour and 1/4, depending on which boat you take. There is a deck on top where you can enjoy the sun, or seating inside. If you are thirsty you can buy a beer or bottled water.
Once you exit the ferry, you will be greeted by a mob of people offering you rides. A taxi ride to our property should cost about $45. If you'd like to arrange someone to meet you, let us know and we can help you with that as well. The drive is gorgeous, and you will arrive at our house in about 45 minutes.
It takes a bit of time, but it's totally worth it, and the journey itself is part of the experience of living on an island. Because so few cars can fit on the ferry, the island is very quiet in terms of traffic. In fact, the only traffic I've ever seen was when I got stuck behind a herd of cows :)
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like us to set up transport for you.
Sincerely, Hanna
