There are a multitude of medieval chateaux, scenic villages and prehistoric sites for which this area is famous. Les Eyzies and the caves of Lascaux are 35 km distance. Along with the River Dordogne there are lakes for fishing (in which are found carp, sturgeon, trout etc.) or you can fish the River Ceou (with its carp and trout) although a licence is required costing around 16€. In the local villages there are some outstanding restaurants along with artisan crafts, arts and pottery. Markets are held most days. Super Location - Great Hosts
Stayed for a week as a family of four and really enjoyed the quietness. The Barn had all we were looking for with Paul and Helen thinking of everything making all the difference. We had sole use of the pool which made it the base for activity - or lack of activity. Supermarket and Bakery are not far away.

Lovely stay
My husband and 9 Year old son had a lovely peaceful stay here recently. The accommodation was very comfortable and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a quiet and rural setting though a car is essential to get about.

Perfect place for a relaxing family holiday
I didn't really think we would get much of a relaxing holiday as we were travelling with a 16-month-old. I was wrong. This is the perfect place to stay if you are on holiday with young kids. The barn comes complete with a big box of toys, stairgates, high chair, cot, baby swing and other baby essentials. Of course, with the temperature hitting 40 degrees while we were staying there, all we really cared about was the pool, which was amazing. Paul and Helen are fantastic hosts, very helpful and friendly and really have thought of everything. The cottage is a five minute drive from the nearest village, but that didn't bother us. It was a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. And there are so many amazing things to visit in the area: dramatic castles, beautiful gardens, pretty towns, all within a 20-minute drive. The furthest we travelled was a journey of an hour to reach the Foret De Singes, where you could feed popcorn to monkeys! We will remember our pleasant evenings sat at the outside table sampling the local vin rouge for a very long time!

Beautiful restored barn - Perfect location
Just returned home after staying at Les Cordonniers for 2 weeks. This lovely renovated barn had everything you could possibly need. The property description on Trip Advisor is perfect, as is the location. The owners Paul & Helen live in the farmhouse and were available anytime if needed but at the same time were not intrusive. They are a lovely couple who went out of their way to make our holiday enjoyable & memorable. Helen even giving us some freshly baked cakes and home grown veg and Paul taking my husband on some sight-seeing cycle rides whist I relaxed by the exclusive pool. Even Bella their dog, took us on some local walks and Thomas their cat joined us every evening after smelling our BBQ. Paul, Helen Bella & Thomas - all brilliant hosts! Stunning scenery and local villages/towns with a short drive. Ideal location on the Dordogne.

Terrific place to stay!
We have 3 children 4 and under and it was fabulous for all of us. Paul and Helen were very helpful from the very beginning and really generous and hospitable. The kids really took to them and enjoyed becoming friends. They bent over backwards for us in providing all that we needed and information on the area. The Gite is full of character and has everything you would need.....even with a young family. Loads of toys, books and a craft station!! Also stair gates, high chair, outdoor toys, swing and slide and the pool was very safe. The gite is in a tiny Hamlet surrounded by farmland and really very peaceful. The area itself is beautiful and has lots of things to do and see within a short distance drive. Its a great area to cycle and canoe. Near by Roque-Gageac has a good one hour boat trip taking in some Chateaus and The Gardens of Marqueyssac was great for kids with play areas and a mask making station. Fabulous toy shop in Domme! We would HIGHLY recommend staying here. We would definitely go back.

A hidden gem
We consider ourselves truly fortunate to have stumbled across Les Cordonniers during our search for a property to rent. We have no previous experience of renting a property in France and this has set the bar very high for any future rentals that follow. The barn has been beautifully converted and the exposed beams and wooden floors are outstanding. The owners Helen and Paul have furnished the barn to a very good standard with obvious considerable thought given to ensuring that guests feel at home from home. On the ground floor is an open plan kitchen/diner and lounge with stairs to a bathroom & shower and two bedrooms (one with a double bed and the second with 3 single beds and a cot). There is an additional room on the ground floor with a washing machine and dryer – bicycles and various items of sports equipment. Immediately outside was a table and chairs where we enjoyed our meals served with several glasses of wine. We had sole use of a very nice swimming pool. Helen and Paul lived in the farmhouse nearby and were near enough should we have any queries or concerns and far enough for us to feel we had our privacy. The barn was in a village that didn't appear on many maps however five minutes in a car and we had access to a supermarket, pharmacy, bakery and other amenities. For us the location was spot on and very tranquil giving us easy access by car to some of the other beautiful villages and towns located nearby. Helen and Paul were great hosts and their local knowledge helped us to get the most of the holiday for what we wanted to do; they said we would have a wonderful holiday and we did!

Stunning location, beautiful Gite, lovely hosts.
We had a lovely two week stay at Les Cordonniers. The area is stunning and very tranquil, however there is no way you could get bored. Fabulous trips out close by and everything you could possibly need to keep children and adults entertained on site. Absolutely lovely hosts who live on site and bend over backwards to ensure you have a lovely stay. Hope to return as soon as possible.

About the neighborhood
Lol Bas is a mainly rural area in a very lovely part of the Perigord, truly peaceful. Great for children to play safely and parents to relax. Many places of adventure , castles, chateaux, markets and beautiful villages. The people are really friendly and just try to please. The roads and foot-ways are quiet and there are many places to cycle (especially if you like hills) or walk. The river Dordogne is a fantastic one, the cleanest in France and not very fast flowing with the chance of hiring canoes etc. to use on it. The local produce is of the finest quality. Pre history is everywhere for those interested, at Les Ezyies and Lascaux among some famous ones.

How to get there
From Calais either the tunnel or the ferry it takes about 12 hours with some stops for food and the necessary breaks (or 9hrs just stopping for petrol and a quick break). There are two ways, one around Paris and one through Rouen, Evereux, Chartres and Janville using the N154. Those with children might think of breaking the journey up so a stop at Orleans might be an idea. The route is easy on the autoroute after Orleans, following the signs Vierzon, Chatearoux, Limoges, Brive and coming of at J55 at Souillac. Then follow signs to Sarlat on D 703. watching out for a turning on the left after Calviac where you follow the D703 onto a more minor road signposted to Carsac. At Carsac you go under the railway bridge and after 25 or so metres turn left to Vitrac. This is still D703 passing the Ch.Montfort continue until you reach a T- junction in front of the Hotel Plaisance. Turn left onto D49. Follow this crossing the Dordogne into Cenac (where you can pick up supplies) through the town and ascend the hill for circa 5Km. Watch out for a turning on the opposite downside of the hill on the right signposted D60 to Daglan, Fumel. Turn Right. Pass the Etang du Riol fishing lake on your left and continue for 300 metres where after the double bend there is a small turning on left signposted Lol-Bas and Lol-Haut. Turn up this lane , up and through the hamlet of Lol-Bas and just as you leave you will see some white gates... You have arrived. GPS Coodinates and other info: 44.45.10.02.N and 1.13.23.39.E and with the St Martial de Nabirat postcode 24250.
