My daughters and I took our annual trek to Mexico. We flew to Guadalajara, rented a car and drove to Guanajuato. We had reservations at Casa Palmas with check-in required by 11 PM. We were doing well on time when we got caught in a driving rain storm and arrived in Guanajuato around 10:30. Long story short, if you are not familiar with Guanajuato and your Spanish skills are lacking it is a really good idea to arrive in the daylight. There are two exits to the road (which loops around the town) and to get to the apartment one should take the second. We did not. That took us through a great deal of construction and eventually got us to Juvenito Rosas. I finally stopped someone parking their car and asked if they knew where Azucena was located. They got out their GPS and located it, pointed out a Pemex blocks away and showed us to turn there.
When we arrived it was already 1 AM. We found the address and as is often the case with property in Mexico, it looked very different (far more mundane) than the inside. We had great trepidation being there so late and figured we would probably have to find other accommodations for the night, but saw someone walking around in the living room. I rang the door and a young lady came to the balcony. I inquired as to this being Casa Palmas and she asked if we had a reservation. On telling her we did she came down, moved her vehicle from the garage to accommodate ours.
Accommodate would probably be the key word to describe our experience with the young ladies who operate the facility. They were extremely gracious and went out of their way to be of assistance. Even though we were late Mayra was more concerned with the problems we had finding the place than how late we were. Both ladies had excellent English and were a wealth of information regarding the city.
The Casa is a lovely two bedroom apartment with the living room and kitchen. The bedrooms each have a full-size bed built on a rustic frame of pallets. The kitchen and living room are furnished with rustic pieces from the area. There is a balcony off the living room with a beautiful view of the city. There is also a large courtyard off the kitchen with fruit trees and carport with a great hammock hung between two pillars. That area is sometimes used as an event center. The courtyard and balcony are both available as smoking areas. Even in August, because of the altitude the area is temperate, and even cool in the evening. On arrival you are given a garage door opener for the garage located at the street level. With that you are able to come and go as you please without disturbing the owners of the apartment who live in apartments that share the courtyard. The apartment is built above the garage. The entire facility is built up the side of a hill so that the apartment opens up to the courtyard at ground level. There are very steep stairs from the garage to the apartment. They are open at the top, which does make it not a place you would want to stay with young children.
Each morning we were there we were furnished with fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee (which we are able to make any time we chose) fresh fruit and pan dulce. We were also told we were welcome to use the refrigerator, utensils, plates and flatware should we want to go to the market and buy food for other meals rather than eat out. There is a large bottle of purified water available in the kitchen for drinking, cooking or making coffee. WiFi is available throughout the facility, including in the courtyard and is included in the price.
While the ladies who operate the facility were available and accommodating, they were never intrusive. The apartment is conveniently located (once you know where it is). The rooms have lots of space and shelves for storage. Each has a television. The beds are comfortable. There is plenty of hot water. My only complaint is we did not have more time to stay there. I will not make that mistake next time. I cannot recommend Casa Palmas highly enough.
