A lovely tranquil gite to relax and enjoy the surrounding area; great for walking and cycling but not too far from the beautiful towns of Samur, Angers and Tours to name a few. Numerous chateaux to visit, wine tasting and conveniently located restaurants to indulge in.Definitely recommend this gite ;we have never slept so well in such a comfy bed. Sally and Adrian were very generous sending over fruit and veg regularly. We had an amazing 2 week stay and hope to be back one day.

Beautiful and peaceful
We found this house on your site and did not really know quite what to expect from the photos. We followed Adrian's directions and found an idyllic little cottage at the end of a long drive. NB do not rely on a sat-nav! This is a small cottage, ideal for two people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle but be close enough to the chateaux of the Loire for easy exploration. The pictures on the web do not do justice to place, it really is idyllic, in a lovely setting and just so quiet and peaceful. Adrian and Sally are delightful hosts and their collection of animals a joy. Lovely fruit and vegetables from the garden and great walks in the area. We had taken our bikes and had a good cycle round the lake in the morning before going to explore the chateaux in the area. There is also a lot of good wine in the region and some lovely food from local markets. We had a really good two week stay and felt sad to leave at the end and would recommend this lovely spot to anyone.

Lovely Location
This little gite is tucked away in a quiet, pretty location. Within walking distance is a small town with a bakery and walks around the lake. The gite is basic but has everything needed and the owners are just next door and very helpful and friendly.

While we are happy with the overall review, we are disappointed about a couple of the ratings. These guests rate 'bedding' as only 3 out of 5, but they brought their own bedding and the beds and mattresses are brand new and not cheap ones. Consequently we cannot understand why they should give this rating and what is being rated. The 'cleanliness of the bathroom' is also rated as 3 out of 5 but it was spotless. The room was only completed last year with a new bath and shower, both of which are regularly cleaned thoroughly between visits. There did prove to be a loose toilet seat which we offered to fix but they declined our offer at the time. We always welcome guests bringing problems to us during the stay, so we were disappointed that if they were unhappy with these things they were not mentioned during the visit. We are of course glad that they enjoyed the other aspects of the accommodation and location.

Tranquil getaway
We had a lovely time staying at 'La Bergerie'. We were quite tired so enjoyed a lot of lounging in the back garden in the sun and reading - nice to have this private spot. The cottage was lovely and spacious for the two of us, and would easily accommodate more. One needs to be quite flexible to negotiate the bedroom and staircase up, and needs to duck if you're over about 6ft to avoid roof beams. It was lovely and airy inside, even with the temperature being 35deg on one day. The local bakery was wonderful, with lovely baguettes, pain au raisin, and croissants. We visited Saumur, Tours, and Langeais while there. We went to a car boot sale at Langeais, then visited Chateau Langeais, then wandered the town to find a restaurant - really enjoyable. On our last day our hosts helped us to manoeuvre their rowing boat into the huge dam alongside the property, and we had a great few hours getting frazzled in the sun whilst dodging the local fishermen. A really fun holiday. Thanks. The photos on the website don't do it justice! It's a lot bigger and more private than it looks in the photos. Unfortunately we didn't manage to explore the veggie gardens etc. We enjoyed the passion fruit provided by Adrian, our host.

Charming and helpful hosts made our stay special.
This cottage is very rural, yet only a 30 or 40 minute drive from the Loire river and some of its main tourist attractions. For us this this worked very well. Adrian and Sally made us feel very welcome, going out of their way to make our stay pleasant and special. The property was clean and well maintained, small, but perfectly adequate for our family of five. The location was charming, including an outdoor terrace and a lake nearby. There is a bakery (open 6 days a week) 2 km away, a short bike ride on the bikes which were made available to us.

Peace & Quiet in the countryside
despite the difficult start - don't follow the google maps directions, get to Breil & phone! Adrian & Sally couldn't be more helpful - even drove out to us so we could follow to the cottage. Once there, the cottage definately fit the bill for what we were after - a week of chilling out.,Having been to the area before we did not visit the plentiful sites/chateaus nearby but they're there if it's what you're looking for, instead we had one of the most content dogs in the world going for walks here, there & everywhere. Of course the counter to getting away from everything means that it is quite remote, however the cottage is well equiped to fend for yourselves and there are plenty of markets, shops & supermarkets just a short drive away (and of course restaurants). The very comfortable bed - actually a double & a single are up a quite tight spiral staircase, so that and the remoteness probably don't make it suitable for older travellers, but as long as you can climb & duck (low beams - at 6 foot I averaged one head bump a day!) it's very comfortable and nicely laid out. The bathroom is also upstairs. Downstairs there's a sofa bed and a dining table, but even in slightly overcast weather we still managed to spend most of our time outside, where the chickens & geese roamed freely and Billy & Bertie (Adrian & Sallys dogs) would often appear to see if our dog was coming out to play! All in all, highly recomended as a perfect escape from real life

Idyllic
This was a perfect place to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. It was so peaceful and tranquil and our family were very comfortably accommodated in the spotlessly clean newly renovated cottage and converted barn. There was plenty to do with wandering around and exploring the extensive grounds and easy walks around the beautiful lake, the younger members of the group enjoyed taking the boat and canoe on the lake and had many bike rides (which we hired from our hosts). We also found many chateaux and quaint French villages to visit and ate many very reasonably priced meals when we weren't eating in using fruit and veg either from Adrian's garden or from a local fruit farm. Adrian and Sally (hosts) are very welcoming and helpful with an amazing amount of useful local knowledge. The accommodation was very clean, the kitchens well appointed (apart from no dishwasher!) and the beds very comfortable. We will definitely return!!

About the neighborhood
The area around Breil is mostly forest and farmland, with a splendid chateau in the village, the Chateau du Lathan, Worth a visit is the Museum of Jules des Bois at Parcay les Pins, a short cycle ride away. A famous 19th/20th century sculptor, the museum hosts examples of his work as well as putting on other exhibitions. In the immediate area you will find several wonderful gastronomic restaurants such as Le Pelican, at Vernantes, or La Renaissance at Le Lude. But lunch time typically French meals of real quality and value can be found in almost all the local villages and towns in various restaurants, such as the Bouff'tard at Hommes, for around 11 or 12 euros for three courses including wine. A splendid area for cycling, walking, enjoying the true French countryside or just chatting with the locals, you will find flourishing local markets almost every day of the week in various towns and villages. Extensively forested, it is possible to follow forest tracks from Breil right down the banks of the Loire. On the edge of the Lac de Rille you will find a fascinating 'petit train' , a small steam train open most weekends in the season and daily in August. New line has been laid for this year making it an even more delightful experience, especially for children of all ages.
Getting around
Rail stations at Tours, Saumur, Langeais, Paris is one hour by fast train. Ideal for cycling as very few hills and numerous cycleways and small roads with little traffic. Forest tracks also suitable for cycling. Numerous walks and walking routes with maps available from local Mairies and the Internet. 'Randonnee' or rambling routes are very popular and well documented in France and most villages and towns have several well posted routes, both long and short. Visiting major towns like Tours, Le Mans, Angers, you are recommended to park outside and use the modern, fast and frequent light rail/tram services, which give all day travel around the towns for a couple of euros (including parking).

How to get there
Only three hours from Caen, you can take top quality uncrowded motorway almost all the way and although there are tolls they are not expensive. Alternatively take the Route Nationale which is almost as quick and gives you the opportunity to stop in numerous Norman towns and villages for a leisurely meal on your way, or to take a good cup of coffee at one of the many road side cafes and bars. From Calais or other northern French ports, the journey is a little longer, nearer four or five hours, but again there are excellent motorways which take you to Rouen and then the rest of the way. Look out for the signs for many attractive villages and ruins well worth visiting on the way. If you aren't in a hurry to get here, it is a far better way to journey and arrive refreshed. Via Calais or Boulogne via Rouen and Le Mans. By flights to Tours. (various UK airports) or Nantes (We will pick guests up at Tours airport at a small charge for transport and our time.)
