Cottage
The Cottage at Lion's Gate sits high on the hill overlooking Red Hook harbor with a spectacular 270 degree view of Tortola and St. John. In a few minutes you can walk down to Red Hook for shopping, diner, nightlife or to catch a ferry to the other islands. We are close to everything but when you are up here it's all seems so far away. My husband, Chris, and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 25 years. He came to dive, I came to sail, we met by chance and discovered that we both have a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris is very talented and built a house on the top of the hill in Red Hook. We got married in 1995, and had often talked about making the home, that we love, a vacation villa for guests. So in 2008 we expanded to accommodate visitors in our downstairs... So in 2008 we expanded to accommodate visitors in our downstairs studio apartment. We're thrilled with the way it turned out as it truly captures the Caribbean life style that we love. The apartment has been so popular that we decided to build a one bedroom cottage It took a full year to fulfill our dream, and I am happy to say we finished on July 4th. It is a Caribbean dream cottage with the most spectacular views! We often marvel at how many humming birds call the apartment home, and now it seems that green parrots have taken up residence at the cottage. What luck. I'm sure you will love it too. The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand. The view is expansive, you can see Tortola, next is St John and on a clear day St. Crox. The trade winds will keep you cool as you sit outside from breakfast to diner, and of course it if needed there is air conditioning. There are three beaches nearby, one you could walk to, one is about 5 minutes by car, Secret Harbor which is a hotel so there is a restaurant for drinks and lunch and palm trees for shade, and the other is 10 to 15 minutes away, Lindquist, not amenities but plenty of beauty. It's our newest and is my new favorite beach. It has just taken over by the Magen's bay authority so they have picnic tables and life guards there. The ferry terminal to ST. John, Tortola and Virgin Gorda are just down the hill form us, you can see them coming and going from the porch. It's all right at your door step but feels like a million miles away when you looking out. It couldn't be more perfect.

Exactly like pics and listing - loved it
Peaceful and relaxing porch with view. Perfect for 2. Added surprise was being able to pet the family’s lovely dog. The bathroom had high and large vanity, and shower was big. Queen mattress was very comfortable. Location was great to do water tours. Wish I could have stayed longer. Host was very accessible and worked hard to get the max high speed for me.

Cozy Private Retreat
This little cottage was a great find! It's tucked into the mountainside above Red Hook with a secure entrance gate. The cottage was very clean and the decorations had a nice carribian feel. The owners responded quickly to my inquiry and Maxine was most helpful getting me settled in. This is a cozy and private retreat suitable for a solo stay, or for a couple. Beautiful views of Red Hook, the harbor and St Johns off in The distance.

I'm always delighted when guests love my cottage as much as I do. Waking up to our view makes my day all the brighter. Sometimes a parrot comes to say hello. Wish I could sign him to a contract but they are so independent. Please come again, we would love to have you back Thanks so much Maxine

Stunning View Great Location Fantastic Cottage
The cottage was amazing....everything you need plus a wonderful view of St John. Conveniently located overlooking Red Hook, close to restaurants, activities, and the American Yacht Harbor. The cottage is well appointed, spacious, and the hosts, Maxine and Chris, took care of everything! A great rental....we'll be back!

It was wonderful having guests who love the view as much as I do. The best part is that I can look forward to another visit. The dogs miss the visits as well. They often ask where you went. See you next time Max

Wonderful island retreat with views!
This was our fourth trip to St. Thomas, and we are so glad that we found Max and Chris. Not only did we feel connected to all the activities in Red Hook, we also had a sense of privacy - being 350 feet up the mountainside. This also afforded us fantastic panoramic views of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix on the horizon, and BVI as well. The cottage is beautifully appointed, and Chris has made beautiful mahogany finishes and furniture - including the tables and queen-sized bed. Max and Chris are gracious hosts who are as visible (or invisible) as you need. We also spent a magnificent day sailing with Max as well. We've had great success in finding places to stay in St. Thomas, but this is clearly our favorite! We'll be back soon.

Excellent experience
I stayed at Maxine's cottage for one week in early March. I had a fantastic experience staying here overall. The cottage is nestled on a hillside, just above the town of Redhook. The accommodations are very fitting for a couple due to the romantic atmosphere. The pictures don't do the views justice and it is quiet enjoyable to wake up to the views and cool hillside Seabreeze every morning. The drive up to the cottage is a little intimidating at first but is relatively simple when compared to the rest of St. Thomas. I would say a vehicle is certainly recommended here but not 100% necessary, as you can take a 5 minute stroll down the hill into town. Be advised that water in St. Thomas is mostly collected by rain, so there is a finite amount of water available for use when flushing the toilet and showering, just something to keep in mind if you typically take long showers or flush multiple times, or if your traveling here with more than 2 guests. Overall, I found the owner Maxine and her husband Chris to be excellent hosts and it was very enjoyable not only to deal with her for the transaction, but also for things like restaurant and activity suggestions in the area as well as excellent conversation about island life. My vacation to the US virgin Islands was really that much better because of this cottage.

Peaceful, safe, and absolutely stunning!
Staying with Max was exactly what Lisa and I were hoping for. We avoided resort prices, stayed in a cottage that felt brand new, and felt like we had a friend on the island in Max. We can't say enough positive things about her and her property. Gated, clean, bright, etc. Red hook is also a great area. It's quiet and you can be at the ferry in minutes. We didn't have the chance to sail with Max this time, but we will definitely stay on St. Thomas again and there's no place other than Max's we'd want to be! Thanks again for everything!

About the neighborhood
"The Cottage" at Lion's Gate is in Red Hook on the Eastern end of St.Thomas. Red Hook is very active. All the day sail boats are here as well as the fishing fleet. The ferry dock is just down the hill from Lion's Gate. You can be on St. John in 20 minutes or be on Tortola in the BVI in 40 minutes. Right down the hill from us are all the restaurants, everything from Pizza to fine dining. There are also shops and night life. It's all very close but when you are at "The Cottage" you don't even know it's right down the hill. All the beaches are nearby. Secret Harbor resort is only 5 minutes away with a restaurant and palm trees for shade. Lindquist is 10 minutes, no amenities just sheer beauty. A bit of a longer ride will bring you to Megan's Bay on the North side. Very popular spot with all the amenities.
