The Cottage at Lion's Gate sits high on the hill overlooking Red Hook harbor with a spectacular 270 degree view of Tortola and St. John. In a few minutes you can walk down to Red Hook for shopping, diner, nightlife or to catch a ferry to the other islands. We are close to everything but when you are up here it's all seems so far away.
My husband, Chris, and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 25 years. He came to dive, I came to sail, we met by chance and discovered that we both have a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris is very talented and built a house on the top of the hill in Red Hook. We got married in 1995, and had often talked about making the home, that we love, a vacation villa for guests. So in 2008 we expanded to accommodate visitors in our downstairs studio apartment. We're thrilled with the way it turned out as it truly captures the Caribbean life style that we love.
The apartment has been so popular that we decided to build a one bedroom cottage It took a full year to fulfill our dream, and I am happy to say we finished on July 4th. It is a Caribbean dream cottage with the most spectacular views! We often marvel at how many humming birds call the apartment home, and now it seems that green parrots have taken up residence at the cottage. What luck.
I'm sure you will love it too. The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand. The view is expansive, you can see Tortola, next is St John and on a clear day St. Crox. The trade winds will keep you cool as you sit outside from breakfast to diner, and of course it if needed there is air conditioning.
There are three beaches nearby, one you could walk to, one is about 5 minutes by car, Secret Harbor which is a hotel so there is a restaurant for drinks and lunch and palm trees for shade, and the other is 10 to 15 minutes away, Lindquist, not amenities but plenty of beauty. It's our newest and is my new favorite beach. It has just taken over by the Magen's bay authority so they have picnic tables and life guards there.
The ferry terminal to ST. John, Tortola and Virgin Gorda are just down the hill form us, you can see them coming and going from the porch.
It's all right at your door step but feels like a million miles away when you looking out. It couldn't be more perfect.
