Our house is conveniently located within the Colonial Zone of the city Santo Domingo and is situated on one of the rarely quiet blocks. It's just a few minutes walk from all of the wonderful restaurants and shops, and is just 1 block from the ocean. About the neighborhood
The Colonial Zone is amazing. You'll find a mix of tourism with locals who have lived their entire lives in the area. You can get anywhere by foot and/or an Uber/taxi (use referral code ubergregmudd if you are new to Uber). Thanks to modern technology, you'll have access to a US-based phone and a few speed-dials to help with any questions/concerns you may have. On our street specifically, you'll mainly find local families, less tourists (what we ourselves prefer), and a low noise level. The neighbors are welcoming but for the most part don't speak English... a great chance to brush up on your Spanish.
Getting around
Traveling in and around Santo Domingo is quite easy and renting a car only optional. Please note: when you book your car online, it likely doesn’t include the mandatory insurance and other fees here in the DR. You can estimate that it’ll cost you about $15 more than your daily rate. So, approximately $35.00 on the off season to $65.00 on season for an economy car. In addition, gas is approximately $4.50+ a gallon. Uber, Taxis and Buses are also options.
