A Quiet Peaceful Homestay in a Gorgeous, Working Farm Community on the Shores of Lake Titiacaca
I've just wrapped up a month-long trip to Peru with a four-night stay at Luquina Chico on the shores of Lake Titicaca, living on a family farm with a generous, hard-working family who ensured that my wife and I had a restful, healthy, fantastic stay. We spent our days climbing the nearby mountain, hiking through the trails that spread through this community, watching baby lambs gambol, cows moo, bulls work, donkey's carry and bray, and pigs and sheep everywhere. The neatly kept fields of Luquina Chico create a beautiful pathwork of greens and browns, producing the delicious, traditional food we ate in Yrene's welcoming kitchen., three meals a day. Quinoa, potatoes, fish, eggs, local grains--this was true farm to table eating. And the light--exquisite: amazing for photography. We walked everywhere.
Our favorite part was the quiet (except for the farm animals) and the opportunity to watch the local people go about their daily lives: harvesting potatoes, bringing the sheep in at dusk, working their fields, washing clothes in a basin on the lawn. Our hosts and their neighbors, in fact everyone we encountered, was friendly and welcoming, even when we only shared a few words of common language. Rather than be busy doing (more) activities, we were free to explore to our heart's content, seeing this gorgeous lake from a mountain top, from every angle on the shore and on two boat trips to nearly islands that our host arranged for us. The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular, the starry night sky was unlike anything I've ever seen.
This homestay is not for everyone--it's rural. There are no stores, restaurants, or shops. No ATMS. All transactions are cash only. Luquina Chico is off the well-traveled tourist path and that's why we loved it. It's rustic: 's no wifi, an intermittent cell signal, and the well-appointed bedrooms aren't heated--no one heats their homes here, and it got cold, but we had warm clothes and there were plenty of super warm blankets,. Not being Spanish speakers, our communication with our host, Jimmy, was limited, but extremely engaging. We found him and his parents to be wonderful hosts. There was no night life here--though we were told when there are enough tourists visiting, there is dancing. But we went to bed after dinner--living like the locals, early to bed, early to rise. But we had warm beds, a hot shower, a flushing toilet and healthy nutritious food.
This is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've ever been to in my life and for the right people, who enjoy a more rustic stay with a family, this place is heaven. It has been for us. I will never forget this beautiful land this generous hard-working community, and this loving, warm family. I will be back!

So nice!
We love visited the family we stay with: Guadeloupe, from Kori Uta household. The room was very clean and comfortable. The food very good but mostly we appreciated the conviviality of the family there. They try to understand our Spanish and were interested in making sure we were welcomed.
I would go back there anytime.
Thanks a lot!

Best way to appreciate the local living
I absolutely loved the family I stayed with. Our rooms were comfy and colourful and just plainly gorgeous. I wish I had learned more spanish to be able to communicate well with the family. They cooked us delicious meals all through our stay. We were also allowed to help prepare the meals. We got to play football with the local kids, watch their traditional dances, be dressed up in the traditional dresses and then have a go at the dances yourself. I would gladly visit Lake Tititcaca and do another homestay.
