Leapfrog is a 1 bedroom apartment situated below 'Toad Heights' in the village of Castara, Tobago.
It has a living/kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen has a gas cooker/oven and fridge/freezer and toaster. There are pots & pans and all the dishes & cutlery that you might need to do your own cooking.
The bedroom has a 'wrap around' mosquito net for your protection at night.
The bathroom has all the normal facilities but the shower is unheated.
The closest beach is only a 6 minute stroll away and there are several small shops within easy walking distance.
There is a large outdoor patio with chairs, table and sun-loungers provided.

Rub shoulders with the locals
Nice quiet location. Lots of birds in he mornings. Not a 5 star resort but perfectly adequate for a base to explore Tobago. I really liked how it's so close to the neighbouring properties. There's very few roads, so people access their houses by crossing adjacent properties. This is disconcerting at first, but after a few days it turns out to be very rewarding as you meet real people and see them go about their routines.
The owners are very personable.
Very few american tourists, most are either English or Canadian

Unique place to stay!
I stayed 14 nights at Leapfrog and had a wonderful time. The location, being a bit away from the village, means it’s possible to see lots of birds, plants and animals like lizards and agouti, which are like large hamsters. Even though it isn't right on the beach, it is still possible to have a view of the sea from the stairs leading up to Toad Heights (house above Leapfrog). There are two beaches within walking distance where there is fantastic swimming and snorkelling at both. The village is about 5 mins down the hill, which has many restaurants and cafes/bars and nearby shops.

Leapfrog is very spacious for a single person or a couple, it has a living/dining/kitchen area, bathroom and separate bedroom with safety deposit box, wardrobe and mosquito net around the bed. WiFi is also available. There is also outside space for eating and lying around on the loungers provided.

I would recommend Leapfrog to anyone who is in Castara, but note that it is quite a steep uphill walk which can be hard work, especially in the sun!

The most relaxing holiday ever!
If you want all inclusive hotels, everything manicured and every need taken care of for you, then do not come here. You will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want a very genuine bit of Caribbean beauty and utterly relaxed life then this is for you. Castara is just lovely, a gorgeous bay with a thriving village that makes its living from fishing and tourism. There are no hotels, only self catering apartments. You shop in the little local shops and buy fresh fish in the fish market ( or better still, go out with a local fisherman and catch your own ) for the same stuff the locals eat, then cook your own simple meals. You can eat cheaply in the bars and restaurants.
We hired a car for one week (we stayed for 18 days) and travelled round the island. Every bay and village in the northern half is a cracker, but Castara is the place we would go back to for many reasons, but the two top ones are the swimming, which is safe and wonderful. It is the only bay we found with a large colony of seabirds, so that you swim amongst diving Pelicans, frigate birds, terns and gulls. What a joy! And Steve and Rita could not have been more welcoming and helpful hosts. They are English but have chosen to live within the community and so you just start meeting locals, who are very friendly. There is a lot of noise, with sometimes loud music(it is the Caribbean!), but this stops by 11pm. What doesn't stop are the cicadas, frogs, cockerels, dogs and birds. But this is all part of the atmosphere. Bring earplugs if you think you might need them!
Simplicity is the watchword. Leapfrog is small and set in the garden which is alive with birds. Many hours can be easily whiled away sitting in the shade reading, watching birds lizards even a red squirrel and drinking rum!
We took a rainforest birdwatching tour with Peter Cox. Fantastic.

A bliss in Castara
Where do I start? We spent 6 nights at Leapfrog and loved our entire stay. It was in little rain-forest of it's own. We hear and see lots of birds and other animals like colourful lizards and agouti. Leapfrog was also surrounded by lemon, lime, mango and banana trees. Although it isn't right on the beach, one can still have the view from the stairs leading up to Toad Heights. Better still, the bathing/snorkeling beach is only 5 minutes (Little Bay) or 10 minutes (Big Bay) walk. There are also 2 (uphill and downhill) local shops within 2 to 5 minutes walks from Leapfrog. The shop on the uphill sells bus ticket to town (Scarborough) and the bus stop is just next to the shop. The downhill shop is called Bingi the King of Fruits and his wife Hazel take bread order everyday (collect next day) from 30TT depending on the size of the loaf. Other shops/bars/restaurants/entertainment are all close by and Internet is accessible from Toad Hall which is just a few steps downhill.
Leapfrog as accommodation is very spacious for 2 people. I think it can easily accommodate a family with 1 small kid. It has a living space/dining/kitchen, bathroom and separate bedroom with safety deposit box, wardrobe and mosquito net. There are also 2 fans, radio and basic utensil/cookery sufficient for simple cooking. The bathroom doesn't have the hot shower but we find the water refreshing in the tropical climate like Tobago.
During our stay we were very fortunate that we were well looked after by Petra and Look Up, the locals who caretake the place. They are both lovely and generous in assisting with our every need and people in Castara are ever so friendly and welcoming.
Last but not least, many thanks to the owners, Steve and Rita who have been very prompt in attending to our every whine and query even though they were miles away from Tobago during our stay. We communicate a lot, got tons of helps and tips from Rita & Steve since a week before we got to Tobago and it is very reassuring that they keep checking if everything is ok with us at Leapfrog. We were also lucky to have the pleasure of Cat, the house cat as a company during our stay. She was very friendly and adorable, making the stay at Leapfrog even more memorable.
We would definitely recommend Leapfrog to anyone who is seeking refuge in Castara and can appreciate many things that come with the nature. But if you mind the noise of birds, insects and roosters, then this heavenly little place might not be your sanctuary.
