This lovely, traditional, end-terraced cottage is set in an idyllic location on the banks of the Crinan Canal in Cairnbaan in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland. Cairnbaan is situated about half way along the Crinan Canal which leads from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the Atlantic coast. This is an excellent location for walking and cycling, particularly along the Crinan Canal tow path but also along the many nearby woodland tracks. The Cairnbaan Hotel is only 10 minutes walk from the cottage and serves high quality locally sourced food in the bar and restaurant. There are lots of attractions and activities to see and do in the local area, including walking, cycling (including mountain bike trails), ancient Standing Stones and Cairns at Kilmartin Glen and Museum, boat trips to the world famous Corryvreckan whirlpool and also wildlife and whale watching trips, enjoying the spectacular scenery, visiting castles (Inveraray and Dunstaffnage) and spectacular gardens (Crarae and Arduaine). If you like going to the beach, you can cycle or drive to Crinan Ferry (about 4 miles) where you will find a lovely sandy beach and great views. The Mull of Kintyre is a lovely area to explore and has some fantastic sandy beaches suitable for picnics, body boarding and the world-famous Machrihanish Golf Course (Great Scottish links collection). You can also catch ferries for day trips to the islands of Islay and Jura (famous for their whisky distilleries), Gigha and Arran. A good route is to cycle or walk along the Crinan Canal tow path from Cairnbaan to Crinan (about 4.5 miles), here you will see the yachts entering and leaving the canal. At Crinan, there is a coffee shop serving lovely home baking and light refreshments and the award-winning Crinan Hotel - renowned for its excellent seafood restaurant. There are many other cycling/walking routes detailed in the cottage guest information. Inside the cottage there is a kitchen/diner and a lounge downstairs. The kitchen has been newly fitted and includes an electric oven with ceramic hob, fridge freezer, microwave and washing machine. Off the kitchen is the dining area, with a table and four chairs. The cosy living room has an open log fire, a 2 seater sofa, 2 chairs and a window with views over the canal and surrounding countryside. There is a TV/DVD, WiFi, stereo, video and Play Station 2 with a small library of DVDs, videos and PS2 games. There is also an under-stair storage cupboard. Upstairs is a bathroom with over bath shower and two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and great views over the canal and surrounding countryside. The second bedroom has twin beds, a chest of drawers and views out to the woodland to the rear of the cottage.More

Thank you Iain and Morag for letting us stay in your cottage. This was our second visit and we weren’t disappointed, sitting in the garden watching the many boats sailing past. Easy walks along the Crinan canal towpath Cairnbaan is a fantastic area to visit We will definitely return

Lovely clean comfortable cottage, perfectly located for lots of walks and sightseeing. Also lazy hours on a sunny day spent in the little garden by the side of the canal watching the boats go by, which was enclosed and safe for our little dog. Everything you could possibly need for a self catering holiday has been thought of, as seasoned holiday cottage renters, this is one of the best. Thank you Morag and Iain.

Superb location, ideal for 'boat watching' if there is such a pastime with the canal about 25 metres from the garden seat located in front of the cottage window. South facing too, ideal for a bit of sunbathing, a pastime I know does exist. We had Mollie the Collie with us and she gave the place top marks too, she could jump into the canal with ease (it's very clean by the way) for her daily swims. If you choose the front bedroom, the double, then don't close the curtains, just wait until you see a mast 'float by' and you'll know it's time to start your day. Where to start? There are lots of walks and cycle tracks (bring your bikes if you can fit them in) with the route along the canal towpath leading to Crinan proving popular. One thing to consider in advance is booking a slot for a fast boat trip to see the Corryvrecken (strong currents and unusual underwater topography produce a particularly intense whirlpool in the Corryvreckan channel) sadly we missed out as it's very popular and was fully booked. The house is simply perfect for a family of four, or two couples. The layout is all you need for a comfy stay, not too big and not too small and the location is great for trips to the local beaches. We stayed here in June 2015 and I am sure we will be back again in the near future. That's a rule we broke on this occasion, never go to the same place twice, but it's just so cosy and in a fantastic spot that we couldn't resist. Top marks to Morag and Iain for all the effort they put in to ensure you enjoy your stay, can we have the scone recipe please ;-)

The cottage itself is very comfortable. It is typical of these terraced houses but has been done up very comfortably. All the inside is recently done and kept to a high standard. Everything with the booking went very smoothly. The location beside the canal is just perfect. Literally from the door, you can walk for miles along the canal. Then in the local area there are huge amounts to do: from prehistoric remains to wonderful coastline. For a relaxing break it's a great place to stay. I suspect it will become a regular haunt for me.

Cottage was well located and pretty near all facilities. Rooms were of a good size. Owners provided plenty of tourist information and one of them popped in during our stay to ask if things were okay, which they were. Would recommend the Kilmartin Hotel as a good place to eat and drink.

Location, location, location!!! Our second visit to this amazing cottage. Immaculately presented and wonderfully clean, it felt 100% safe as soon as we arrived (given the conditions we unfortunately face in 2020), a real credit to the owners. The location is superb overlooking the historic Crinan canal, just great to relax and watch the yachts and the world go by. The fabulous south facing garden is pet and child friendly - a real sun trap! Just a five to ten minutes walk to great food and drink at the Cairnbaan Hotel. The area is great to explore, rock pools at Carsaig beach, scenic walks at Taynish nature reserve all just a short drive away.

About the neighborhood
Cairnbaan Cottage is located in the Conservation area of Cairnbaan and on the banks of the Crinan Canal 'Britain's most beautiful shortcut'. The local area is called Dalriada, an ancient costal kingdom in the Heart of Argyll. Cairnbaan is only 3 miles from the town of Lochgilphead which has a supermarket, petrol stations, banks, shops, pubs, Indian and Chinese restaurants, a chip shop, a swimming pool, sports centre and a 9 hole golf course open to visitors. If you wish to explore further afield, Oban (34 miles) is known as the 'Gateway to the Isles' and here you can catch ferries to several Inner Hebridean islands including Mull, Iona, Tiree and Colonsay.
