Manor house with private pool and tennis court set amongst the vines next to the picturesque market Bastide town of Sainte-Foy-La Grande, part way between St Emilion and Bergerac. Bergerac airport is a 30 minute drive (Bordeaux airport just over an hour). It is therefore perfectly positioned for wine tours or kayaking along the Dordogne. The house lies on the southern range of hills which run along the Dordogne river valley and enjoys commanding views. The house sits in mature grounds of approximately 6 acres which ensures privacy and tranquility. All 5 guest bedrooms are large (so no 'duff' room for the late arriver!) and one of them is a bunk room with 5 beds (plus 2 trundles) which allows flexible sleeping arrangements. All beds are made up with Egyptian cotton sheets and towels. Perfect place for a family group
This house couldn't be more perfect for a group of families to get together. The location is easily accessibly but incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The house is beautifully decorated with stunning features in every room and extremely well equipped with games and pastimes. The children in our party particuarly loved sleeping in the bunk bed room together. The garden is extremely extensive and beautifully maintained. We loved visiting the local night markets for an evening out and excellent local town market which is famous in the area.

Idyllic setting for a wonderful family holiday
Having just returned from two months in Europe, I must express my thoughts regarding the stand out accommodation on our travels. The house is perfect, clean, includes a real kitchen, plenty of room inside and out, tastefully furnished and kitted out with everything you will need. Outside, the spacious grounds include a swimming pool, tennis courts, table tennis, dining areas and an abundance of fruit trees. Along with the activities available on site, within easy reach are a variety of interesting places to visit including St Emilion, Duras and Saint Foy La Grande, Winery’s, fabulous restaurants, night markets, etc. We had an amazing family holiday with many treasured memories and will return here for longer next year.

Fabulous French house for family get-togethers
This is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy al-fresco meals and be active if you want. The house has loads of original features, indoor and outdoor areas to relax in and the owners have done a great job furnishing it. We were a group of four families and one of the best things about this house is the layout. No-one feels on top of each other. Upstairs there are two bedrooms overlooking the vineyards with a shared bathroom, then in another section of the house through a second sitting room there is a gorgeously decorated en-suite bunk room (that can fit 7 kids in if needed!) and a bedroom with free-standing bath as well as an en-suite. Downstairs there is another spacious bedroom off a games room that has a sofa bed with a bathroom. The weather was amazing when we were there so we spent most of our time outside. There is a lovely terrace with sofa area which was perfect for pre-dinner drinks and there is a big table that managed to seat us all under the vines for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The pool and sunloungers always seemed to be bathed in sunlight and with the pool being fenced we could relax knowing our 3 year old wouldn't fall in. The kids had loads to do. When they weren't in the pool they were playing tennis, table football, table tennis or playing boules on the massive garden. The house is so lovely, so we spent most of our week relaxing there, but we did manage to tear ourselves away to go wine tasting in Saint Emilion and for a pizza in the square at Sainte Foy-la-Grande. We truly had a fantastic week and we can't wait to come again.

Idyllic escape from it all - perfect for families and friends
Gorgeous 17th century conversion - set literally among the vines. So peaceful and a perfect way to escape from it all. Minutes drive from lovely towns and farmer's markets, within easy reach of St Emilion and Duras - we had a perfect week where the kids ran free and made full use of the swimming pool, tennis courts and wide open spaces, while the adults sat pool side or on shaded verandas enjoying local produce. The rooms are beautifully presented. A fantastic holiday - very highly recommended.

Beautiful house, wonderful location - didn't want to leave!
The spacious house is set amongst vineyards and trees, has a pool and tennis courts - wonderful mix of historic features, elegantly stylish decor and all the mod cons a family needs... adults can lounge and relax whilst the kids tear around to their hearts' content. Meal times on the veranda tended to be lengthy affairs as such a lovely spot to sit! Amazing night skies too... Really peaceful and atmospheric setting close to Saint Foy la Grande for food shopping etc and of course the various vineyards of Bordeaux. St Emilion and Duras were great day trips (and the night market at Saint Foy la Grande was fun too) but we only scratched the surface of what the area has to offer as we were all having such a relaxing time at the house. Really didn't want to leave and would definitely visit again!

Superb home for multi family holiday
I spent 2 weeks at La Gravouse last summer and felt it was the perfect home for a large group. We ranged in age from 4-72 years of age and the home was very comfortable for all of us. It's large but has a cozy feeling to it. The owners have thought of everything that you might need: it's fully equipped to have supper on the beautiful terrace over-looking the vines, and also conveniently located close to several small towns with great places to eat. The pool is enclosed which is wonderful for parents of young kids, and there is a bedroom on the main floor too if you need that for the 'older folk'. I hope to return one day.

A real beauty
We stayed here for the second time in mid-July and had a simply wonderful time. The house is beautiful - elegant yet homely and very well apportioned. A newly surfaced tennis court was a great hit with adults and children a-like. The swimming pool was a joy as the sun beat down, with the surrounding mature gardens and terraces offering quintessentially stunning evenings, and oh-so perfect locations for breakfasts, lunches and dinners as one drinks in the surrounding vineyards and countryside. A real winner. We’ll be back for sure!

Excellent accomodation, fab newly resurfaced tennis court
We stayed here for a week with family and friends. The house is beautiful and the current owners have clearly put a lot of thought into the interior decor and furnishings. Highlights for us were the lovely pool and newly resurfaced tennis court. You need access to a car as everything is a drive away, but some lovely little French towns nearby and lots of vineyards to explore.

Lovely week!
We had a fantastic week at La Gravouze. We were 4 families with kids ranging in age from 3-9 and we all loved it. The house was beautiful, spacious, clean, well equipped and had loads of comfortable areas to sit in and an enormous garden, which the children all loved. It was 5 mins into Ste Foy la Grande, which has the most amazing French market. We barely left the house though and had a fantastic weeks holiday. We will be back!

About the neighborhood
If you can drag yourself away from the house: the market at Sainte-Foy-La-Grande is well worth a visit (Saturday 8am - 1pm) giving a real feel and insight into local life and produce. There are other markets in and around the area throughout the week - details provided in the 'recommendations' section of the house manual. during the Summer months, there is also a night market at Sainte-Foy every Thursday when tourists and locals alike sit in the town square and sample produce from a variety of local vendors in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. the UNESCO World Heritage Site St Émilion is a 30 minute drive (or short train ride) away and makes a great day trip. Saint-Émilion is one of the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux.
Getting around
The nearest train station is at Sainte-Foy-La-Grande, 5 minutes drive away. Direct trains to Bergerac (20 minutes), Bordeaux (1 hour) and St Emilion (25 minutes). The largest supermarket is E. Leclerc Grand Pineuilh, under 5 minutes in a car. Super U, Intermarche and Lidl are also within 5 minutes from La Gravouse. There are plenty of local bakeries, but our favourite is "Le Fournil de Talmeuneur", next to the Intermarche. There is a wine cooperative selling a wide variety of local wines under 1km from the house in Les Levres, always staffed by knowledgeable and helpful vintners who will point you in the right direction and allow you to taste before you buy!
