The Viewpoint House – a unique and private viewpoint located over the the beach, marina and village of Calheta, framed in a green area, with extreme tranquility and privacy.
Here you can feel all the elements of nature in its splendor, the sun, the sea breeze, the ripple and stir of the sea, the sound of the birds flying and the magical moonlight touching the ocean.
Virtually devoid of closed areas, the house invites its occupants to direct contact with the environment, providing pleasure, relaxation and joy.
There you have everything, just not comparable to anything else.

The instructions and suggestions, I give them personally upon arrival.
We spent ten glorious days at the appropriately named "Viewpoint House" in July.
Viewpoint House is perched on the cliff overlooking the Calheta beaches with 180+ degree views over the ocean. It is completely private. An inviting plunge pool, shared with the two other properties, is a few steps away and has a sun deck which we didn't need to use because we had our own private deck.
The accommodation is comfortable and unpretentious. The bedroom and ensuite are upstairs and the kitchen, semi-enclosed eating/relaxing area and LARGE private deck, BBQ and second bathroom are on the lower level. The adjacent garden is full of lush fruit trees - we were too early in the season to fully benefit from them. The kitchen has an induction hob and microwave but no oven.
There is a separate communal laundry.
Nelson was a very welcoming host and provided us with some good local tips.
The walk down to the beach takes about 20 minutes. A €5 taxi fare was far preferred to the strenuous walk up the steep hill. Remember: Madeira is very steep.
Getting around:
We hired a car from the airport for the whole time and parked it at the top of the cliff. It seemed very safe even though unattended. On reflection, when we return, instead of hiring a car we would rely on taxis which are inexpensive - we estimate that the cost would be less or similar and require only minimal forward planning.
The Pingo Doce supermarket down near the beach is well stocked with everything.
We wholeheartedly recommend Viewpoint House and hope to return soon.
Madeira departure tip: If returning to the UK, the airport queues are long. Make sure that you have input all your Covid documents correctly before going to the airport and have the various apps open to switch between them. We had no trouble, but many others did. This caused delays with reprocessing passengers. Arrive at least an hour earlier than you normally would.

Wunderbarer Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen auf Madeira
Wir hatten drei wunderschöne Wochen in der Casa Do Miradouro in Calheta. Die Insel hat eine tolle Landschaft, ein sehr angenehmes Klima und super ausgebaute Straßen mit wenig Verkehr und rücksichtsvollen Autofahrern. Nelson und Ana waren exzellente Gastgeber. Von der Casa do Miradouro hat man eine herrliche Aussicht auf das Meer und die Umgebung. Das Haus ist sehr sauber und ordentlich. In der zweiten Ferienwoche haben Nelson und seine Frau auf unseren Wunsch hin eine große Grundreinigung durchgeführt und sogar unsere Wäsche gewaschen. Vielen Dank dafür!
Berichte anderer Besucher bezüglich des WLAN können wir nicht bestätigen, es war während der gesamten Zeit hier sehr stabil. Frisches Obst, Gemüse und Kräuter konnten wir im Garten der Anlage jederzeit ernten und die Mangos schmeckten viel intensiver und süßer als jene aus dem Supermarkt. Nelson versorgte uns auch mit frischen Avocados. Das einzige, was man beachten muss: es führen viele Treppenstufen hinab zum Haus, deshalb empfehlen wir es nicht für gehbehinderte Menschen. Wir bedanken uns nochmals bei Nelson und seiner Frau Ana für die schöne Zeit, in der wir ihr Haus nutzen durften.

Superbe villa

Un petit potagé à disposition entouré de bananier.

Ein Paradies
Nelson ist ein wundervoller hilfsbereiter Gastgeber: er kam uns auf dem Weg entgegen und trug unsere Koffer zum etwas versteckten Häuschen. Kaffee war genauso bereits vorhanden wie eine gute Flasche Rotwein und landestypische Zimtkekse. Die Wohnung ist einfach aber charmant und der atemberaubende Ausblick von der Terasse entschädigt, dass das WLan nicht ganz stabil ist oder der Strom beim Kochen gelegentlich ausfällt. Sogar ein Außengrillplatz ist vorhanden und an Küchenutensilien, Föhn, Kerzen, Handtüchern und Decken fehlte nichts. Den kleinen Pool haben wir nur kurz genutzt, dafür aber jeden Morgen auf der Terrasse gefrühstückt, abends der untergehenden Sonne zugesehen und im Dunkeln den Gelbschnabelsturmtauchern gelauscht. Mit einem Mietwagen liegt das Häuschen ideal für Wanderungen in alle Richtungen und auch der Supermarkt unten im Ort ist gut ausgestattet und sogar sonntags geöffnet. Wir werden auf jeden Fall noch einmal wiederkommen!

Oberhalb von Calheta
Wir haben uns aufgrund der Bewertungen für die Nelson Häuser entschlossen, eines der Häuser zu buchen.
Wir können das, was bisher geschrieben wurde, vollends bestätigen.
Die drei Häuser liegen am Hang oberhalb von Calheta. Zwischen anderen Häusern. Keine Alleinlage. Nach Calheta muss man eine ziemlich steile Straße hinunter (und wieder herauf) laufen. Leihwagen ist notwendig. Nichts für Gehbehinderte. Vom Kliffhaus zum Parkplatz sind es 107 Stufen. Es gibt einen Garten und einen kleinen Poolbereich, beides auf Grundstücken zwischen den Häusern. Die Häuser sind modern und funktionell eingerichtet. Man hat einen sensationellen Fernblick. Traumhafte Sonnenuntergänge. Dass Calheta sehr viele Sonnenstunden hat, wussten wir. Dass es im Januar richtig heiß werden kann, also richtige Sommertage, hat uns überrascht. Wer Ruhe sucht, ist hier gut aufgehoben. Calheta ist nichts besonderes. Allerdings der Supermarkt hat ein vielfältiges Sortiment. Hier bekommt man alles was man braucht. Ärgerlich finden wir die Parkgebühren in Calheta. Selbst fürs Einkaufen muss man ein Parkticket ziehen, oder geht erst nach 19 Uhr einkaufen. Im Hafen gibt es einige Restaurants und Tourenanbieter für Delfin und Walbeobachtungstouren. Guter Standort um vor allem den ruhigeren Südwesten der Insel zu erkunden. Ansonsten haben wir auch viel einfach nur die Ruhe und die Aussicht von den Nelson Häusern genossen, das hat oft genügt. Jeden Tag mit dem Auto die Tunnel zu fahren oder die steilen Hänge gefällt nicht jedem. Das muss man wissen, wenn man die Insel besucht. Nelson ist ein aufmerksamer Gastgeber. Sehr um das Wohl seiner Gäste bemüht. Wir haben sehr gerne Salat, Avocados und Erdbeeren, auch Kräuter aus seinem Garten gegessen. Frischer und leckerer geht's nicht.

Awesome wiew!
We stayed in the Viewpoint house during one week in February and had a fabulous time.
The house contains of a kitchen, with an attached outdoor dining area (very well covered from wind and rain), one bedroom, one bathroom with access from the bedroom and another bathroom with access from the patio. The bedroom can be quite cold during this time of the year, but as soon we mentioned to our host he showed up with a portable radiator and the problem was solved.
The patio is fantastic place to get some sun, chill, relax and just enjoy the spectacular view!
And the attached garden with herbs and vegetables is very nice, but can need a little bit more maintenance.
J Nelson Silva is the best host we met so far, he is very thoughtful and mend about his guests. He met us when arriving to the house and helped us with the luggage, and there were some wine, fruits and cakes waiting for us in the house. When leaving, he was also available and assisted in an excellent way.
To enjoy Calheta and its surroundings you definitely need a car.
We were not able to park the car at the parking area, instead we had our rental car parked on the street (without any problems) not too far away. But to be aware, there are quite many stairs to reach the house from the street.
If you want to stay close to the nature, with an exceptional view, hear the ocean and the wind we can definitely recommend the Viewpoint house in Lombo do Doutor!

Tolle Ferienwohnung mit Topaussicht
Das Haus View Point liegt am Berg mit direkter Aussicht auf Calheta und Meer. Mit Meeresrauschen wacht man auf und kann den Booten, die auslaufen, zuschauen.
Die Einrichtung der Wohnung bietet alles, was man braucht. Der Gemeinschaftspool (mit direkter Aussicht auf das Meer), den man sich mit 2 anderen Parteien teilt, hat nach einem erlebnisreichen Tag zur Erfrischung beigetragen. Meistens waren wir aber allein. Dank Jáo N durften wir uns am Gemüse und Obst auf dem Grundstück bedienen. Auch gab es einen kleinen Picknickplatz auf einem kleinem angrenzenden Grundstück für alle Bewohner mit Superaussicht, von wo man den Sonnenuntergang mit einem Glas Wein genießen kann.
Wir können das Haus mit dem netten Vermieter Jáo N nur empfehlen!

FANTASTIC
Last year we stayed in the cliffhouse which was great but as there was only the two of us we stayed in Viewpoint, Wemanaged to get a look around this property last year when we were here. This house has the best BBQ by far and the longest balcony with views of the ocean as far as you can see, great photos of the sunset and the moon at night over the bay.
NELSON was once again the perfect host with cake and wine waiting for our arrival . We were lucky enough to spend the day with him on our 3rd week stuffing ourselves with Espatadda, This has got to be tried if you are a steak lover.
We love this place and the new pool made it even better than last year.
Thank you Nelson and family, love to all and not forgetting JOAO at the local Cafe/Bar who does a wicked Picada (more steak).If you want the best weather the Island has to offer it is always in Calheta. Do not look for good weather on the North coast it is only about 40km away but what a difference those mountains make.

Atemberaubender Meerblick
Der Blick aufs Meer ist 10 Sterne wert!
Wir haben eine wundervolle Woche hier verbracht. Nelson ist ein sehr netter, unkomplizierter Vermieter.
Man schläft mit Meeresrauschen ein und wacht mit einem grandiosen Blick aufs Meer wieder auf. Wir haben sogar Delphine von der Terrasse aus beobachten können.
Im Garten gibt es Früchte und Zutaten für einen leckeren Salat zum selber pflücken.
Es war ein herrlich entspannter Urlaub, wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt.

Panoramic sunset
It was our first visit to Madeira and Viewpoint House exceeded our expectations.
The panoramic view from the sun terrace above Calheta is stunning and we spent many hours just relaxing and enjoying the view during the evening and watching the stars at night.
It's an ideal base to explore the beautiful Island of Madeira. Taking about 45 minutes to travel from the Airport to Viewport House. The main roads are very good and the tunnels straighten out the route.
You definitely need a hire car as there is so much to explore on the Island.
There is a good supermarket in Calheta and a Petrol Station at the end of the road leading up to the house.
I would point out that the house is reached by walking down quite a few steps, due to it's location on the cliff side, which may not be ideal for some people. It did keep us fit going back up them though :-)
Hopefully we'll be back to visit again in the future

Calheta
Calheta, a village situated on the west side of the island of Madeira, distinguished by its mild climate and rural environment, it has excellent mountain routes and fantastic paths, allowing you to get to know the true nature of Madeira.
We have hundreds of endemic plants located in our laurissilva forest, considered a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal.
Calheta has an excellent golden sand beach, a marina and all kinds of services and tourist attractions, of which it is worth highlighting:
- The Arts Centre 'Casa das Mudas';
- Engenho- The sugar cane crushing plant, with production of honey and sugar;
- The Church;
- “Quinta dos Prazeres” pedagogical farm.
There are organized tracks and paths that allow you to discover the essence of this fabulous island.
Other than relaxing, you can opt for other activities in the field and in full nature, like bird watching, canyoning, cane or deep sea fishing, adventure paths, boat trips for viewing dolphin and other species, in short, a multitude of things.
Every year there are activities in the municipality of Calheta, of which we highlight:
- Almost permanent exhibitions in the Arts Centre – “Casa das Mudas”
- Madeira DIG Festival
- Municipality festivals
- Traditional “arraiais”
Live Calheta - is a good place to stay.
