We built Kikalele in the heart of one of Mexico's most abundant and beautiful nature reserves so that our family and guests could spend time with this breathtaking virgin landscape. With miles of secluded beach and one of the densest bird-species wildlife sanctuaries in the world, our luxury villa is an elegant and airy refuge from the world, nestled amongst waves and birdsong. Kikalele is perfect for nature lovers, conservationists, birders, families looking for a unique place to explore, couples desiring a romantic getaway, and those looking to unplug from their busy lives and reconnect to nature. There are numerous activities in this rich area that we recommend to all our guests. A guided nature tour will take you to see many species of birds, including the densest concentration of flamingos in Mexico. There are crocodiles, rare birds, and many other animals! This tour will also take you to see Las Coloradas, lakes famous throughout the world for their pink color. Specialized birding tours and guided fishing tours can also be arranged, and paddle board, kitesurfing and kayak rentals are available, with instructors who can meet and teach you right at the beach. The nearby Chichen Itza ruins and cenote are majestic and highly popular, and the lesser known Ek Balam ruins are very beautiful and sparsely visited, with a magical cenote you can swim in. The nearby village of Rio Lagartos is lovely to walk through, and the delicious fresh fish served at the restaurants feeds all of the Yucatan peninsula. For interested guests our caretakers can also cook daily Yucatec cuisine for your group, which they will do in your kitchen so you can observe the recipes. The miles of open beach are wonderful for walking along, finding diverse and ever-changing shells, daydreaming, and taking in the local flora and fauna, and swimming in the ocean is of course fantastic! The water is gentle and shallow. You can wrap up your day by star-gazing at night from the bed or terrace and taking in the brilliantly clear night sky. We received special permission to build within this precious biosphere reserve and bird sanctuary from the Mexican wildlife protection agency. Our promise to them has been to operate the lowest-impact and most environmentally friendly coastal development in the whole of the Yucatan. Kikalele is a model for eco-friendly luxury living. The house can accommodate up to 8 guests and was built to have the lowest impact on the surrounding environment possible. It is completely solar powered and is considered the most environmentally friendly coastal development in the Yucatan. From everywhere in the house, there are spectacular views of the sea. The house is many miles deep into the federally protected biosphere reserve, and far from the lights and sounds of civilization. Other than a few homes, the reserve is free of human intervention, and it teems with flora and fauna. Our home's incredible intimacy with nature affords travelers an unparalleled experience of Mexico's natural beauty. FAQ What essentials should I bring? Bring easy clothes, swimming suit and sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, close-toed shoes or hiking boots, and something to wrap yourself with in the evenings when the wind might pick up. Beach and shower towels are provided, as well as shampoo, conditioner, lotion and soap - all made organically from honey from the area. Are there grocery stores or restaurants nearby? If you are not requesting the cooking and provisioning service, there is a grocery store on the drive in from the airport which is listed in the directions. There are several restaurants in Rio Lagartos as well. Oil, salt, and other cooking staples are provided. Is there cell reception at the house? Yes Is there wifi at the house? Wifi at the house may be intermittent, dependent on the weather in the area. The house is ideal for those looking to disconnect. Does the house have beach furniture? Yes, there is a bench with shade on the beach, a portable umbrella, and beach chairs. What are some animals I can hope to see? Flamingoes, jaguarundis, raccoons, foxes, monkeys, dolphins, and many rare birds. The reserve is a bird sanctuary and has 395 inhabitant bird species, one of the highest species densities in the world. Their beautiful singing will accompany you throughout your visit, and wake you in the mornings. Can you see the sunrise or the sunset from the house? The house faces north-northeast and is located on the very northern-most point of the Yucatan peninsula, so there is ocean to the east, to the north and to the west. Depending of the time of the year, you can often see the sun rise out of the ocean in the morning and set back into the ocean in the evening. It’s very romantic. At night, the sky is brilliant with stars. The views during both the day and night are breathtaking.More

Julia's house is incredible; it is located within a national park, surrounded by jungles looking out onto the gulf of Mexico, with miles of private beach. I had a wonderful time here with my family. We swam in the ocean, went birdwatching and fishing, and...More

About the neighborhood
The beach of Playa Kuka is a small off grid community which was developed with the environment in mind. The community consist of only 5 private homes, and together we are the most environmentally respectful development in the state of the Yucatan. We worked for several years with the Mexican Government and Environmental Protection Agency before we received special permission to build within this precious reserve and bird sanctuary. For inquiries into a beachwide rental, please write us a message.
How to get there
Cancun is a 3.5 hour drive, and Merida is a 2.5 hour drive. The drive will take you far off the beaten path and into the beautiful countryside of the Yucatán. Detailed driving instructions are sent to all confirmed travelers. Rio Lagartos is a 40 minute drive from the house, or a 10 minute boat ride right from the beach.
