Steeped in legend and mystery, it is said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, where you can still visit wizard Merlin's Cave. Also the many filming locations seen in the BBC’s Poldark production, and the beautiful fishing village Port Isaac in north Cornwall which plays the fictional village of Portwenn in ITV's much loved Doc Martin series. Several stately homes and gardens including; Lanhydrock, Cotehele, Mount Edgcumbe, Port Eliot and Antony House can be easily reached from here, as well as rugged Bodmin Moor and a variety of beautiful, sandy beaches, bays and hidden coves skirting our stunning Cornish coastline. Other local attractions include sailing, fishing and diving, and spectacular walks, particularly on the South West Coast Path, especially westwards via Talland Bay over Polperro, Lantic Bay, Lantivet Bay and Polruan to Fowey. Adrenalin junkies can race at the go-karting track, try out the zip wire or the giant swing at the nearby Adrenalin Quarry! See our Guest Manual for more details. The nearest villages are Pelynt 1½ miles and Duloe 2½ miles. Pelynt has two very good grocery shops, a post office, church and The Jubilee Inn pub. Duloe is interesting for its stone circle made up of eight bright white quartzite stones placed in an oval shaped circle. It can be accessed near Duloe village on the B3254, signposted on the west of the road in a field. Also in Duloe is The Plough, a delightful, award wining, Cornish pub serving simple, honest cuisine, real ales and wines. Six miles away is Looe a very quaint and pretty, coastal town and fishing port. Several fish dealers operate from the docks of East Looe. With its fleet of small fishing boats returning their catches to port daily, Looe has a reputation for producing excellent fresh fish. The town is also a centre for shark fishing, and is the home of the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain. The town centres around a small harbour and along the steep-sided valley of the River Looe which flows between East and West Looe to the sea beside a sandy beach. Off shore to the west, opposite the stonier Hannafore Beach, lies the idyllic St George's Island, otherwise known as Looe Island. Looe's main business today is tourism with a large number of pubs, cafés, restaurants, and shops. East Looe centres on its broad sandy beach with the distinctive Banjo Pier. Stretching back from here is a grid of narrow streets forming the ancient centre of the town, packed with many small shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs, and the Old Guildhall, now a museum. Along the estuary lies the quay, with several fish dealers. Towards the bridge lies the Victorian Guildhall, and just north of the bridge the railway station. This is the terminus of the beautiful Looe Valley branch line to Liskeard, well worth a return ticket! At Liskeard, the line connects with the main Plymouth to Penzance Great Western main line to Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Bristol and London Paddington. West Looe spreads west from the bridge on the Polperro Road and along the waterfront south of the bridge are restaurants, pubs and pretty cottages leading towards a cluster of shops and businesses and the Church of St Nicholas. Further south along the coast road is Hannafore Point, marking the edge of Looe Harbour, with to the west the wide, stony Hannafore beach, facing across a narrow channel to Looe Island. Beyond lies a coastal path leading to the hamlets of Porthallow and Talland, and from there on to Polperro. On New Year's Eve, Looe has a surprisingly large celebration; it is on the list of top 10 places in the UK to celebrate the New Year. The small fishing town, usually quiet in winter, due to the largely seasonal economy, is host to an influx of visitors. People flock the streets in their hundreds, wearing fancy dress, a tradition upheld by all ages. The crowds begin the evening in the town and slowly move towards the seafront for a fireworks display, and the announcement of the New Year. ➤ SHOPPING In Pelynt village (1½ miles) you’ll find two very good grocery shops, both with convenient parking in front of the door. Boxall’s Spar Shop and Post Office is in the centre of the village, it sells a wide range of chilled and organic produce, including local cheeses, hams, lots of other delicatessen products, groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh herbs, toiletries, newspapers, magazines, wines, spirits, hot snacks and stationery. It also has a cash machine. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 7.30 am until 9pm and Sunday 9am until 6pm. Pelynt Stores & O’Keeffe’s Traditional Family Butchers, is just opposite the church, behind the Old School. It has an excellent family run butchers (delicious, self-made, award winning sausages!) and stocks a wide range of groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, hot snacks, beers and wines etc. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 5am until 7pm and Sunday 8am until 6pm. Opening times for both stores can vary over Public Holidays. You'll also find various excellent shopping opportunities in Looe (6 miles). For great fresh fish and seafood direct from the quay go to Pengellys fish market on Buller Quay (which leads from the short stay car park). Also on Buller Quay is Quayside Fresh a farm shop and post office, selling a great range of local farm fresh vegetables, salad and fruits as well as dairy produce, bread, biscuits, tinned goods, drinks, a wide range of groceries and they also have a Warrens Butchers selling quality local meats, sausages, etc. Also in Looe you’ll find two Co-Op stores, various bakers (we recommend Sarah’s!), Boots Chemist and banks. Supermarkets: There is a Morrisons supermarket in Liskeard (7½ miles) , ASDA and Sainsbury’s in Bodmin (14 miles) and an excellent Waitrose in Saltash (18 miles). For a wide range of quality international wines we recommend Waitrose and Morrisons. ➤ DOGS Well behaved dogs are welcome STRICTLY BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY! There is a surcharge of £20 per dog, per stay. Maximum 2 dogs. Please ask us when booking if you would like to bring your dog. ➤ WOOD BURNER If you would like to order logs, kindling and firelighters for your arrival the cost is £20. The supply should last 3-4 evenings depending on usage. If you need further supplies you can buy them from both local shops in Pelynt village. Please let us know when booking if you would like us to organise your logs. BEFORE attempting to the light the wood-burner please BE SURE to read the section ‘Wood-Burner’ in the cottage’s Guest Manual. You'll also find a separate list of step-by-step instructions by the fireside. The wood-burner should only be stocked with seasoned logs. No other materials (garbage, plastics, paper etc) should be burnt in the stove. ➤ THE KITCHEN We are keen cooks so Trevenna has a very well equipped and stocked kitchen with a selection of recipe books. We keep a larder of cooking basics, such as herbs, spices, salt, peppercorns, olive oil, vinegar, stock cubes, flour, sugar, etc, as well as supplies such as tea, coffee, aluminium foil, greaseproof paper, cling film and cleaning items. All the things you need on a self-catering holiday but don't necessarily want to bring with you or buy and carry home. We do not charge for this, and cannot guarantee these items will definitely be available, everything is simply what we and our guests buy and leave for others to enjoy, please feel free to use the store and add to it. If we all in someway replenish what we use, donate a replacement, or simply add something else to the larder, we can all enjoy the benefit now and next time! ➤ TAKE A LOOK AT OUR OTHER COTTAGES ▪︎ Trengrove Cottage (sleeps 6) Perfect for a family or group holiday.
