Nakanojo-machi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture, Kanto
Our inn is a rustic traditional Japanese wooden house. about 70 years old. It looks like traditional Ryokan but with an American twist, I speak English and do away with formality. Nothing intimidating for non-Japanese travelers.

Here, cooking plans are not mandatory. You can cook in our roomy kitchen. We can take you to a local supermarket and a winery to get what you need to enjoy your dinner. You might want to barbecues outside on warm sunny day.

There are hiking trails, caves, waterfalls, a river around our inn. Or you just like to stay inside to relax with a warm wood stove.

There is a public bathhouse across from our inn. Some of you might be uncomfortable with communal baths. Don't worry! Our baths are both private and available 24 hours a day.

Interaction with guests
Inn keepers are staying in the house, but short distance back from the rooms for guests, so you can ask help or assistance in an emergency, if it happens, even in the middle of the night. They will take care of things up on request such as making a fire for BBQ, trying old Japanese rice cooker on woodfire, going shopping etc otherwise you can be all alone to be relaxed.

About the neighborhood
Sawatari hot spring resort has 800 years of history, but lost everything in a fire in 1945. Now it has been rebuilt. So the area is rich in history but little known. The good point is that the area is very quiet nothing but surrounded by beautiful natre, not too much toristy. I'm sure you will love the area if you are nature lover.

Our house, Kaneki, is a casual family owned old folk style inn with a natural hot spring, it has been modernized, but the charmming sooty ceilings still retain some remnants of a life with open hearth. Wind blows in and out freely through the shoji-screens. It is well-ventilated, an ideal place for summer relaxation and the hard wood floors are cool and comfortable to walk on.
Getting around
As is often the case with Japanese counrysides, sightseeing spots are dotted in a large area. It is convenient to come by car otherwise you will waste too much your time to wait for a local bus/train service whenever you visit. There are lots of beautiful waterfalls, mountains/hills, lakes and old temples and shrine around our area. We can take you and show you around if your group is less than 10 people. (our car is for up to 10 passengers)
Or you can just stay at our hose being relaxed, enjoying our great hot springs, BBQ, walking, or swimming in the river nearby.
Car advised
How to get there
Railway: Nakanojo : 5.0 mi
It is about 120 km north of Tokyo, so it takes 2 hours by train to Nakanojo station from Tokyo. Another 20 minutes from Nakanojo to Sawatari spa resort, where our hose is, by bus but 10 minutes by car or our shuttle (up to 10 people can ride at a time). If you come in your own car or rent car, it takes about an hour to Shibukawa-Ikaho IC by Kanetsu Expressway and another 1 hour from Shibukawa to Sawatari by Root 17 and 353. There are also express bus service from Tokyo to Nakanojo town, it takes 3 hours depending on traffic.
