Wonderful peace and quiet
Nice comfortable place and perfect if you want quiet. Loads of wonderful walks right from the doorstep. This was our second time. Place could do with more thorough cleaning and checking that essential things are in working order.

A truly unique property in a truly unique location
In the middle of a forest by a lake, away from it all, yet close to lots of things to do like the Ffestiniog railway, Porthmadog, Blackrocksands Beach, the slate mines of Blaenau, you name it. The property is finished to a very high standard, comfortable, plenty of space certainly for a family of five. Giles and Bethan were very helpful before and during the stay in reponse to queries. We found the property adequatly clean on arrival and minor niggles were sorted out promptly. Would certainly stay here again.

Staying in amongst the trees
Another fantastic holiday in the heart of the forest. The boathouse is a great place for anyone looking for a place to walk or explore the countryside and nature. Enjoyed the stay so much, watching the steam train pass the property during the day. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful setting
The property was all I had hoped for, it did not disappoint. It was set in a beautiful location and had all we needed for our stay. The communication from Giles gave us all we needed to know. Would definitely return.

Was ok
The Boat house, not sure why its called the boat house as its no where near water, although it is set in a nice secluded wood with no one else around only the folk walking in the woods. The entrance gate that you have to unlock and lock to gain access to the house can be a pain, especially if its raining. The house its self could be lovely, but its very dark as there are few windows and the ones there are, are either small or too high up to look out of and enjoy the view of the woods, the ground floor twin bedroom has lovely french doors but is such a waste, would prefer them on the living room or kitchen. The fact that you have to leave the place as you find it as the cleaner (and I used the term loosely) only does the basics, is a major turn off for me as I don't go away to then have to clean, the house is a let down when it comes to the cleanliness of it, as the kitchen was greasy and dirty and the bathrooms were grimy, good job I was only there for a few nights as I refused to shower there. As we weren't at the property much and was only there a couple of nights it wasn't a real problem but we were so disappointed and would not return.

A wonderful few days
A quiet, beautifully restored stone house set in an idyllic, peaceful place, with lots of opportunities to join a path and go for a walk/hike through the forest. There are some surprising views too. The house is tastefully decorated, but practical too, has comfortable beds with white linen. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, should you wish to, and a large table to get everyone together to eat or to plan your next trip. At the bottom of the hill, about 5 min away, is a pub. We will certainly come back to stay again, as this place was one of those holidays which we would love to repeat.

Secluded, cosy, relaxing stay
Made a very last minute booking, which thankfully the owner was able to fulfil. Loved the privacy and location, despite being in a popular area for walkers. The steam train passing nearby was a treat and within a walkable distance to Tan-Y-Bwlch station. We enjoyed having breakfast sat outside on the logs and using the firepit in the evening. Walking in the surrounding area was lovely and in a good location for the coast as well as getting to Snowdon trails. We hope to stay here again when we're next in the area!

Secluded
This is a wonderful secluded hideaway in the woods above Tan-y-Bwlch. There is virtually no mobile phone signal, but that's part of the charm! A great base for exploring Snowdonia with wonderful walks in the woods and hills around the house.

About the neighborhood
The Vale of Ffestiniog is a natural barrier between north-west and central Wales, and The Mabinogion describes tales of love, magic and treachery leading to a terrible battle at Maentwrog, the first river crossing, with slain princes still lying in the soil. You can feel the magic in the ancient woods that lead direct from the doorstep of the house, and in the royal castles at Harlech and beyond. Snowdonia National Park also offers modern pursuits, like rock-climbing, mountain biking, and the fastest zip wire in the world! Visit Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau, Portmeirion Italianate village (home of TV's The Prisoner), Electric Mountain's hydro-electric plant, Sygun Copper Mine and Porthmadog's harbour, with market on Friday.
Getting around
Plas Halt on the Ffestiniog railway is 15 minutes walk through woods, 15 minutes walk the other way is Tan y Bwlch, with buffet and train shunting. The railway is an attraction in its own right... or walk to Penryhn and take the train back. The Ffestiniog railway can be infrequent and doesn't run every day, but it does connect with mainline at Minffordd and at Blaenau for longer journeys. As for driving, the roads are beautiful, but allow plenty of time!
