Keepers Cottage is just across the courtyard from our own house - Bonnyrigg Hall. This is a working upland farm with about 100 acres of grassland and woodland. Because of our close proximity, we are on hand to meet you on arrival to give keys and show you around the cottage. If you need anything during your stay we are usually available to help.

Brought my family here for a week away with our dog Monty walking and enjoying the wonderful Northumberland countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It was beautifully clean and well presented and we received a warm welcome on our arrival with a home made cake and bottle of red wine on the table waiting for us. My teenage daughters enjoyed feeding the peacocks each day outside the door. It was a great base from which to go out, explore and walk. We will certainly be going back.

Stayed here July 2021, Nicely appointed cottage with high living room. Impressive 4 poster bed (but its quite hard) Unfortunately during our stay there was workmen working on the barn about 2 meters from the Bedroom Window, Front Door and Living Room all week, so no chance of a lay in with the drilling, sawing and banging and also the scaffolding directly outside the large living room window meant you had an audience when eating breakfast. So we decided to just get up and go out allday all week and only use the cottage as a base for sleeping. So not the relaxing holiday we was anticipating.

Stayed here in May, booked based on reviews on cottages.com(REEVO Reviews which I have since discovered only post positive reviews). The cottage was rated luxury, my idea of luxury differs greatly from the description given. After a difficult year we booked thinking we were going to get peace and rest. How wrong we were. The owners choose to keep peacocks, gorgeous birds but extremely noisy during mating season. It is surely the owners responsibility to advise potential guests that this could be an issue. We got woken at 4am with them constantly screeching, in the end we checked into a hotel for a night to get some sleep, and then cut the holiday short. There was bird mess everywhere, we couldn't use the table and chairs outside the cottage because it was covered in it. The grounds are also covered in it. I had to clean my car daily. All the windows had bird poo on them and when you stepped out the kitchen door, the floor was covered in it too. I don't live like this at home, why should I pay to stay somewhere like that. There are two amazing baths in the cottage, but no cold water to either. The underfloor heating had issues.to be fair the owner sorted the heating issue after we spoke to him, and he advised us he was aware of the issues as the previous guest had made them aware. Why wasn't this resolved before we arrived?? Instead they went away for the weekend. We also had workmen arrive at 8.20am and commence work right outside our bedroom window. Apart from their noise, we couldn't open our curtains as we had no privacy. The Outlook from the bedroom is like looking into a junk yard not what you want to be looking at. There are various hazards all over the garden, would be dangerous for children I would think. I complained to cottages.com and have heard nothing since. I also emailed Hoseaons complaints as and sent them photos, I haven't even had an acknowledgement from them. I will not be using either of these companies again and as a travel advisor I will be making customers aware of this. Photos attached, make your own mind up if you consider this to be a luxury holiday.

If you like remote this is the place for you. My sister, myself and our dogs have just had a long weekend here and absolutely loved it. The cottage is warm, comfortable, well equipped and decorated to a high standard. The welcome gifts for us and our dogs were a lovely touch and the free range peacocks, Guinea fowl, ducks and chickens were a delight to watch and hand feed. The cottage is in a fantastic location for walking and exploring the Roman forts and of course Hadrians Wall, which can be seen from the garden. I cannot express how much we have enjoyed ourselves and are very grateful to Jane and David for making us feel so at home. If we can be back then we will be!

This is our 3rd or 4th visit to keepers cottage and it’s fantastic!!! Super comfy bed, lovely lounge/ kitchen and so well equipped. The owners Jane & David are lovely and so accommodating. We have stayed in so many self catering accommodations but this one is by far the best. Lovely quiet and tranquil surroundings, fantastic wildlife, and not far to a few pubs and eateries including Hexham and corbridge. Attention to detail is 10/10 and we will certainly continue to return.

Obviously the main draw to the area is Hadrian's wall, but scenery in general is stunning. The cottage, its location, its condition and its privacy are a delight and we couldn't recommend it more. The walk through the woods and along the boardwalk is sensational. The wildlife on the farm is amazing (how many times in your life have you shooed several peacocks away from your barbecue?) and David himself could not have been more welcoming. Keepers Cottage is five star. Don't miss it!

Stayed at Keepers Cottage in April 2017. The owners are friendly, location is great for Hadrian’s Wall. Accommodation was clean and well presented. It was lambing season whilst we were there. Owners happy to allow our two sons to get involved. We keep talking about going back.

Lovely cottage in a nice area! Great for walking Hadrian's Wall. Lovely cake flowers and wine on arrival much appreciated. Living area is a little small for 4 people, kitchen well equipped. Bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms. No wifi working during our stay but owners were away! Otherwise a great stay

Ho I have just stayed in Keepers cottage and although we had a great holiday I think this cottage is best for walkers as the road is terrible to get to cottage so when visiting sites it is bad to travel on,also I don't think cottage big enough for 4 especially the kitchen, but lovely surroundings.

We had a very enjoyable week staying at the cottage. The directions sent by the owners were excellent (and needed), and we were very warmly welcomed by Jane. We loved the cake, wine and flowers left for us. We went for a walk to Greenlee Lough almost straight away, which was beautiful and peaceful. Spent most of the week exploring Hadrian's Wall - Vindolanda is particularly fascinating, though we also enjoyed Birdoswald, Chester's, and Housesteads, and the walk from Steel Rigg along past Crag Lough including Sycamore Gap (strenuous but worth it). The cottage is warm, well decorated and had everything we needed (including access to a washing machine). Wifi is limited to the living room but that was probably good for us! Very much enjoyed our stay and would love to return one day.

About the neighborhood
Locally there are many spectacular Roman sites to visit. Housesteads Fort is only 5 miles, and Vindolanda just 3 miles. There are several good walks imediately from ther cottage itself. In particular, there is a boardwalk which crosses the stream and leads you around the nearby Greenlee Lough which is great for birdwatching. The national trust property of Allen Banks is also a great woodland walk particularly for dog owners.
Getting around
Keepers Cottage is in a unspoilt location of Northumberland National Park. We are in a secluded area which is off the beaten track. There are no street lights and our area is known for it's dark skies. Perfect for star gazers, and we even sometimes get treated to the Northern Lights. Because of our location is it essential to get to Keepers Cottage by car. In order to get around the area, it is possible to travel by train. Our nearest station is Bardon Mill, which is on the Newcastle to Carlisle line. Also, in the summer, there is the Hadrian's Wall bus service (AD122). This runs from Hexham to Haltwhistle along Hadrian's Wall.
