The tallest house in Port Brulé, Maison Watershed offers unrivalled views over the Nivernais canal and towpath from both the ground and first floors. Life on the canal in summer with hire boats, private craft, the electric restaurant barge 'L'air du temps' which cruises the tunnels leading to the lakes at Baye, plus a constant traffic of cyclists and walkers using the renowned canal cycling route are sufficient entertainment to pass a fulfilling week without leaving the premises. Built in the 1790's at the same time as the canal, the stone walls keep the house cool in summer and there are woodburners and central heating to keep you warm in winter. If you like to eat outside, there is a patio at the rear which is relatively private compared to the courtyard and conservatory at the front where it is difficult to divorce yourself from the canalside activity! The house is perfect for couples or families of up to 5 and if you are looking for activities rather than watch the world go by then the lakes at Baye (3km) are a good start offering swimming beaches with large grassed margins for sunbathing & picnics, fishing, tennis, sailing, canoeing, bicycle hire, nature trails and refreshments. Slightly further afield (7Km) is the market town of Corbigny which has an excellent selection of shops and a good choice of bars and restaurants. There is a market each week and a large market which takes over the town once a month. Watershed, as the name suggests is at the point where the 'Rigole' which carries water 35Km from Lake Pannecière feeds the canal. To the left this water descends a flight of 16 locks over about 3Km to the village of Sardy and thence to the Seine, Paris & the channel. To the right the water pases through the tunnels of La Collancelle to the boat hire base at Baye, from there to the river Loire at Decize and eventually to the Atlantic near Nantes. Following the course of the 'Rigole' which itself has 2 aquaducts either on foot, by bike or by car is a rewarding experience. Having a car at Port Brulé makes it possible to benefit from the multitude of activities, organised walks, ' vide greniers ' ( the french equivalent of a car boot sale ), village fetes, rural restaurants etcMore

we found the house friendly and comfortable and very quickly became our home. The kitchen was well equipped with an outside bar-b que and the bedrooms were light and airy with very comfortable beds. Watching the boats on the canal became our evenings entertainment whilst relaxing with a glass or several of inexpensive wine. We found the car was essential to get around and visit the town of Corbigay for our fresh produce and to go exploring the area where we visited two chateaus and went swimming in the lake at Baye. The canal du Nivernais gave the opportunity for some relaxing walks with interesting nick knack shops spread along it's banks. We enjoyed our stay very much and look forward to returning some time soon.

The property is spacious and airy. The ground floor comprises a conservatory and a games room with two settees, a table tennis table and a good supply of logs for the wood-burners. There is also a book case with a supply of books and a pack of playing cards. The first floor living area is open plan, offering an extensive and well equipped kitchen and a good sized lounge area which comfortably seats five people. The view over the canal is stunning and even in October there were quite a few boats passing through the locks. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side so we were unable to sit out for our meals, but there is a secluded area at the rear of the first floor with table, chairs and a barbecue. As there were only two of us we used the main bedroom which was pleasant and there was plenty of drawer space and a very attractive hanging rail with scope for storing shoes and other bits and bobs. The shower room is off the main bedroom and the second bedroom is entered from the main bedroom (we were informed that this is quite common in France). The second bedroom contains a double and a single bed, a dresser and a large wardrobe. There was plenty of information on interesting places to visit provided in the house, and the lock-keeper’s wife (who lives opposite) guided us to places that suited our particular needs. As an avid photographer with a love of wildlife the canals and nearby lakes provided a wonderful opportunity to view and photograph Egrets, Herons and even a Wren. We also had fun trying to catch some shots of the many Buzzards that sit on the telegraph poles close to Maison Watershed. It took a little while to adjust to the shops opening hours as they are very different to ours in the UK. A friendly baker delivers three mornings a week in Port Brûlé enabling us to savour fresh baguettes and croissants for breakfast. Corbigny, just over 6 miles away became a regular food shopping jaunt while we were in Port Brûlé, and is a gratifying place to visit with its quaint shops and numerous irresistible pâtisseries. On Fridays there is a street market offering some mouth watering delicacies. Eating out was a bit hit and miss, partly because many places were closed for the season and partly because not being fluent in French we could not understand the menus. We did, however, find one memorable restaurant in the back of beyond at Decize where the food, attention to detail and service were superb. Unfortunately, the name escapes us at the moment, but there is a car park and school directly opposite it. Dining here proved conclusively to us that French cooking is an art, and had our stay been longer we would definitely have returned there. Would we return to Maison Watershed? Yes, but probably a bit earlier than October. My husband was disappointed with the weather as he thought heading south would extend our summer. Yet going late did have its advantages in that we had no problems with parking, it was peaceful, calming, relaxing and a delight to enjoy a slower pace of life. The roads in France are a joy to travel, the scenery is magnificent and what struck us most was that we could view the picturesque countryside without hedges obstructing our view and we did not have to fight for a parking space or pay for parking! As soon as we got off the ferry at Dover on our homeward journey we knew we were back in the rat-race.

We spent a thoroughly enjoyable week on the Canal du Nivernais at Port Brule in this property. We have spent holidays in most parts of France over the years and have become quite fond of Burgundy. This is a special location - very little motor traffic on the restricted canalside road but plenty of interest from passing boats, walkers and cyclists. The history of the canal which was built to connect the Loire and the Seine with the original intention of floating timber from the forests in the west, to Paris, is fascinating and Port Brule is at the highest point - downstream in both directions: towards the Seine is the beautiful tree-lined 'Sardy Ladder' of 16 locks - enough for a gentle walk with plenty of interest; towards the Seine there are three tunnels and the deep manmade gorges of Les voûtes de la Collancelle. The whole system is topped up with water brought into Port Brule along another feeder canal from the River Yonne. We hired an electric boat from Baye for an afternoon and did the round trip to Port Brule and back to experience the canal, its tunnels and the 'voûtes' from water level. Corbigny, about 10km away, is a pleasant small market town with a range of good local food and wine as well as a couple of supermarkets. It was extremely busy and lively when the market was operating. We were lucky to catch internationally renowned jazz musician Manu Katché performing in the local music festival on our first weekend. The wider area has good walking and lots of history to explore. The Romanesque churches of Burgundy would take weeks to do justice to. We took enjoyable trips to Vezelay and La Charité-sur-Loire. The property itself is unusual and charming. The little shady patio at first floor level at the rear gave us respite from the sun during the heat of the day and we ate all our meals outside, watching the swallows swooping in and out of the basement. The first floor living room / kitchen is spacious and attractive and gives good views out over the canal. The sleeping accommodation is comfortable and the shower room was clean and functional. We were a family party of three. The fact that the second bedroom is accessed through the first, might not suit everyone but worked well for us. We even enjoyed an evening's table tennis in the ground floor reception room. A unique and delightful spot which I have no hesitation in recommending.
